My Review

**** 4.5 AMAZING STARS****

Each time I sit down to read a new book in River Savage’s Knights Rebels MC Series, I fall more and more in love with this phenomenal series and its distinctive characters. River Savage’s fantastic writing continues to pull me into the world of this series, and I absolutely love every word I get to spend within it. Desertion, the third full length novel in this series, was no different, and I was completely enraptured by Jesse and Bell’s story.

It was heated and bursting with more sparks and fire than fireworks on the Fourth of July. It was emotionally consuming, and had me living and breathing and feeling every single exceptionally crafted feeling and emotion these characters were. It was entertaining as all get out too, and I couldn’t go more than a few pages without smiling or laughing or just enjoying what I was reading.

Desertion just gave me so much when I was reading it. It gave me two magnificent characters who were both fighting some major things in their lives. It gave me their fantastically intense story of what happens when those two dynamic characters come together. It gave me the distinctive world of this series, and all of the wonderful characters that come with it once again.

This book gave me so much, and I just relished in that because it was utterly fantastic to experience.

Jesse Carter is definitely a player to put it mildly. He puts on a happy-go-lucky front, but underneath his charming surface is a man that has experienced a world of pain and more hurt than anyone deserves. Jesse is still reeling from that pain in this book, and you get to experience that full force. Let me tell you that that pain is a doozy, but what you experience with Jesse will have you feeling immensely for his character. He keeps people away, he says things he shouldn’t, and he sure pushes and pushes until you can’t push anymore, but you will completely understand why he does that because of how fantastically this author writes and develops his character.

As much I sometimes hated what Jesse was doing to himself and to others in this book, I just completely understood where it came from and why he was like that, and that just allowed me to completely get his character. I cared for him, I felt for him immensely, and my heart just went to him with what he was going through. Reading Jesse experience that and try to fight through the darkness that threatens to overcome him will completely blow you away.

Bell Johnson was an incredible female character that I instantly connected to the minute I started this book. She was real, she was honest, and she definitely had a striking innocence to her. What I think I loved about Bell the most though was getting to see how her character evolved over the course of the story. Her character is wonderful throughout this book, but I got to experience Bell go from being reserved and held back, to someone who wasn’t afraid to give it all she had, fight back, and give as much push as she could. I loved seeing that evolution in her character because I felt that it showed so much strength in her, and it really just illuminated so many phenomenal things about her.

Like Jesse, Bell has some darkness in her past that continues to cloud her future. I was captivated completely in Bell’s story, and what her and her family were going through while reading Desertion. Reading what she experiences as she tries to find a way out from that darkness just made me love her character more, and just showed that she was a girl who was bound and determined to fight for her family and find the light to all of that darkness.

Now when Jesse and Bell come together in this book you get a lot of things. You get a whole heck of a lot of charm from Jesse, you get a whole lot of “you’re not getting any of this” from Bell, and you get the outstanding level of push and pull that results from that. Jesse and Bell have an electric level of chemistry that fires off of the page, and it just continues to build and build and build some more in Desertion until its inevitable explosion. And let me tell you, when it all explodes, it is mesmerizing, heated as all get out, and bursting with more passion and intensity than you can shake a stick at.

I feel like Desertion is defined in a way by the level of push and pull between Jesse and Bell. That push and pull is heated and sometimes it’s isn’t too pretty to experience, but boy is it emotional, all feeling, and laced with so much intensity. You will feel every single ounce of that push and pull, and your heart will go to both Jesse and Bell for what happens in the midst of all that. Your heart will break for them, it will feel for them, it will love them, and most of all it will want to fight for them because with every push and pull, you get a clearer glimpse of the extraordinary and vibrant thing Bell and Jesse could have if they only gave it a chance.

While Bell and Jesse try to make sense of what it is that their feeling for one another and where that could take them, this book also gives you a storyline filled with many twists and turns. I thought River Savage did an exceptional job of weaving the many layers to this story together, and it’s just one of the many aspects that reminded me why I have loved every book in this series. Desertion was packed with events that paced the story very well, and just had me beyond intrigued to learn what would happen next. While you get a complete story in Desertion, River Savage also did a fantastic job of setting up what’s to come in this series, which I am so excited and looking forward to reading.

That story also does a phenomenal job of bringing the wonderfully distinctive characters of this series together once again. It’s no secret that the Knights Rebels and their lady friends are some of my favorite characters around, and I just relished in getting to spend more time with them in this book. Their interactions with Bell and Jesse just made me love them more, and I was beyond thrilled with what I got to see with their characters. Nix, Kaydence, Holly, Sy, Beau, Kelly, Hunter, Brooks, and all the rest of the amazing characters in this series just added to how much I loved reading this book, and I for one can’t wait to spend more time with all of them.

River Savage and her outstanding writing just allows you to become fully encapsulated within the incredible world of this book with her fantastic characters, and I am telling you that you will love every word you get to spend within it.

Desertion was an emotionally charged book that tells the story of two seemingly opposite characters, who just might be exactly what the other needs to move past the darkness and pain that threatens to consume them. This book was exciting, and passionate, and intense in the best possible ways, while it told the story of two exceptional characters and their extraordinary fight. Sometimes they were fighting themselves, sometimes they were fighting each other and that magnetic pull they shared, and sometimes they were fighting that darkness, but through it all they were fighting and giving it their all.

This book will have you fully and whole heartedly experiencing everything with Jesse and Bell’s characters. You’ll hurt with them, you’ll bask with them, and you’ll fight and fall so deeply with them as you read their magnificent story. By the end of this book you’ll just realize why you love Jesse and Bell fiercely, why you love and root for what their fighting for, and why you once again love the wonderfully distinctive and wholly enrapturing world of the Knights Rebels MC.

I wake up to the heat of someone’s palm against my shoulder. Twisting around, my hand moves faster than my brain, and I snatch it off me.

“Jesse, it’s me, Bell,” she rushes out before I can take it any further.

“Fuck.” I release my grip on her arm and sit up, forcing myself back to the here and now.

“Did I hurt you?” I reach for her searching for any sign of a mark left by me.

“It’s fine. You barely touched me.” She holds her arm out letting me inspect it. I check it over one more time before releasing her and relaxing.

“You wanna talk about it?” I study her face, eyes calm, soft mouth. She’s not freaking out.

“Just some shit that visits my dreams sometimes, nothing that needs to touch you,” I reply, shocked I’m not retreating.

“I don’t mind, Jesse,” she pushes, and I almost cave. Almost.

“The last thing I want to do is talk about this shit, Bell.” She doesn’t argue or press, and I’m grateful for it. I don’t think I’d be able to keep my cool if she did.

“Come back to sleep.” She lies back down and I follow her. She doesn’t ask me any more questions, or make me feel like I need to tell her everything.

“That ever happens again, don’t wake me,” I warn. A menacing thought strikes through me picturing what could have happened if I didn’t wake in time. She’s lucky I didn’t hurt her, like the last time a woman touched me while I had a nightmare.

“You don’t always have to be so brave, Jesse.” Her hand moves to my dog tags. I don’t stop her. I’m starting to like the feeling of her hands touching them.

“Never tried to be, Bell. But talking doesn’t help me. Never has.” I think back to the time when I did try and it forced me out of control. Talking about those triggers only amplified my insecurities. When death sits afar, mocking you in the dangerous confines of your surroundings, it fucks with your head; nothing was going to change it.

Besides, my issues weren’t what I had done. They were what I had survived. My conscience wasn’t clear and my honor wasn’t clean.

“Promise me you won’t touch me.” I keep my tone even, controlled.

“I promise.” I take her hand in mine and bring it to my lips. Maybe one day I will let someone in. Let her in.

Today isn’t that day.

But today, I didn’t push her away.

That has to count for something.

I stood in the doorway, surveying the bar and trying to pick Ms. True out of the crowd.

A woman peered up from her phone and looked back down.

Whoever she was, she was fucking gorgeous. She sat there with her spine straight, blond hair in a perfect bun, and a crisp black dress shirt tucked into a gray pencil skirt. Her high cheekbones almost kissed her deep-green eyes.

I wanted to saunter up to her, ask her for her number, and beg that on our first date she wear the red stilettos she had on, which made my cock instantly hard.

She glanced up, caught me staring, and waved me over.

Well, hell. Maybe she wanted my number too.

Keep calm and act natural.

Her eyes remained down, concentrating on her phone, as I approached.

“Mr. DeLuca, I presume,” she said, glancing up for a moment, her emerald eyes flickering. “Take a seat.”

Disappointment flooded me. The beautiful creature in front of me wasn’t calling me over to get my number. She was my new client.

“Ms. True?” I asked, letting my eyes linger on her legs for a little too long but not caring.

(Stand alone)

I’ve loved once. I gave everything that I had to that love. Blindly believing that nothing could ever take that feeling away from me. Away from us. And when my little world of happiness was ripped from my fingers, I felt a loss that still haunts me to this day.

Now I use that lingering grief as a shield to keep my heart from loving again. It’s that fear that keeps me from letting anyone, except my daughter, get close enough to make it hurt. To make my heart bleed when I inevitably lose again.

Until the day I met Liam Beckett and everything I thought I had protected myself from was shoved back in my face.

He’s on a mission to prove to me that a love worth having is a love worth fighting for.

Prologue

Prologue – Megan

Holy shit.

What am I doing?

“Oh, God! Right there… I’m coming… Don’t stop!”

Is that me screaming like that?

Holy shit.

I didn’t even know that noises like that could come out of my mouth!

“You like that?” he asks with his lips pressed against my neck – the vibrations shooting straight to my core.

I focus, my now alcohol free vision, on the man thrusting above me. His dark hair is blending in with the shadows that are dancing around the room. His face is a mask of ecstasy as he thrusts into my waiting body. It’s a look of pure desire that I will never forget.

What the hell am I doing?

“You feel so good. Your body so greedy for my cock. You want it harder, darlin’?”

I moan shamelessly and feel my body get even wetter with his huskily whispered words.

Screw it – this feels way too good to stop now.

I reach down, dig my fingers in the firm globes of his ass, tip my head back and beg. Beg with incoherent cries for him to take me harder. To take everything he can.

**Two Hours Earlier**

“You look beauuuutiful,” I sing as Dani Reid – No, Dani Cage – walks over to sit next to me at one of the tables scattered around the backyard wedding.

She looks at me, her stunning green eyes bright with love and happiness.

“And you sound a little drunk, my friend,” she laughs.

I just smile at her, running my fingers through the lace on her wedding gown. “This is soft.”

She just laughs and leans back and looks across the yard to where her new husband, Cohen, is standing by the dock talking to some of his friends. This is another one of those moments when I’m reminded that this group doesn’t have a single unattractive person in it. I take a second to look at all the well-built, good-looking men standing around him. When my eyes meet Liam Beckett’s, I look away quickly. For months now Liam has made no secret that he would love nothing more than my undivided attention.

“They’re all so unfairly hot. No men should be that attractive,” I whisper in awe, gaining me another chuckle from Dani. I blush when I realize that my thoughts aren’t staying in my head, where they belong. When I look back over to where the group of men are standing, my eyes hit the familiar pair of deep brown ones again, eyes that always seem to know each and every time I’m looking their way. I quickly look away, feeling that blush get even brighter. I’m not ready to deal with him right now. At least not when I’m this tipsy.

Picking up my wine glass, I take another healthy swallow as I do a quick scan, taking in all that is the Reid Family property. They’ve done a beautiful job transforming the backyard of Dani’s family home for Cohen and Dani’s wedding. I still can’t believe that Dani managed to pull off a surprise wedding without Cohen even catching the smallest hint of her plans.

“Are you sure you’re okay with Molly spending the night with my parents, Megs? I know it’s hard for you to leave her overnight, but they just love your daughter to pieces. And I know Owen loves having her around.” Dani reaches out and takes the hand I had resting against the table while she speaks.

“Yup,” I smack and nod my head.

“You’re drunk,” she says, repeating her earlier observation.

“I’m not drunk, I’m tipsy. There’s a huge difference there. If I was drunk I wouldn’t be able to walk. Watch!”

I jump up from my chair with a little more power than I mean and quickly stumble when the narrow heel of my five-inch shoes sinks into the soft grass beneath me.

“Whoa, there darlin’.”

I feel it, those words, every single syllable deep down in my gut. Each rumbled word vibrating through my body creating a slow burn until they end with a sharp pulse between my legs. His arms locked at my elbows and my back solidly against his front – where my graceless stumble caused me to end up. I jerk my body tight and feel his laughter reverberate through my body once again.

I attempt to pull my arms from his loose but strong hold, only to give up when it becomes clear that he isn’t going to let go. Shifting until my face is turned, he lets one arm go and helps me spin until I’m facing him, and moves his hands from my elbows to my hips.

“Hey,” he says with a smile, the dimple in his cheek popping out.

“Liam,” I sigh and then curse myself for not being able to hide my reaction to him.

His smile turns knowing and his eyes darken before dropping to my lips.

I gulp.

“You should be more careful, Megs.”

“It’s Megan,” I snap.

“I know, babe, you don’t have to keep reminding me.”

“Then why can’t you seem to actually remember it?” I squeak and try to pull my body away from his grip – and fail, again.

“Someone doesn’t sound drunk anymore.” I hear Dani speak but I don’t take my gaze off Liam. “She does look it though.” She muses on a laugh, which finally gets my eyes to snap to hers.

“I’m fine! I just had a few glasses of wine and I haven’t eaten much. But, I most definitely am not drunk. I think I would know if I was drunk.”

Okay, so that’s a lie. I might not be drunk, but I am definitely slightly past tipsy. Dealing with Liam – or rather my attraction to Liam – is hard enough for me on a good day, when I’m completely sober. But with this amount of wine flowing through my body, I just can’t trust myself.

It’s taken everything I have to keep him, and his obvious interest, at bay for the last couple months. When he’s around he goes out of his way to get me alone and lay it out. He wants me.

“You look stunning when those shadows aren’t rolling around your shoulders,” Liam whispers, his lips press close enough to my ear that I can feel his words one by one against my skin.

I shiver, his words hitting me close to home, but the tone causing me to forget I should be pushing him away. Especially when he’s talking about things that he has no business speaking about.

“I’m fine,” I stammer.

“Yeah, darlin’, I know you are.”

His eyes keep their hypnotizing hold on my own. I hear Dani excuse herself. I don’t turn to watch her disappear in the lingering crowd of party-goers that are still left milling around. The music is still floating in the air around us. As I look into his eyes everything around me feels like it’s…alive. It’s a feeling that I’ve been missing for the last few years. A feeling that only comes to visit when I’m with my daughter, or until recently, when Liam Beckett is in the same room. It’s a feeling that, even though I shouldn’t, I feel guilty for allowing myself to enjoy.

Whether it’s the wine, the fact that Molly left a few hours ago with Dani’s parents, or the man standing in front of me, all I know is if I don’t hold on to this feeling for as long as I can right now, I’ll regret it for years to come.

“Megs,” he says on a sigh, his fingertips digging in and his eyes swirling with a rich hopefulness that turns those golden flecks you can normally see swimming in his brown eyes into a burning fire lighting his gaze.

Hungry eyes.

I don’t think. If I had given myself just a second to process my next move, I’m sure I would have backed out of his hold and run as fast as I could to my car. But, I didn’t think, so my next move was pure, one-hundred-percent Megan. But not the Megan I’ve been for the last couple years since my husband died. No, this Megan feels like I’ve finally dug myself out of those ashes I’ve been living in since my life burned up around me.   The cloak of depression that normally lingers loosely around my shoulders, dropping to my feet with the feel of Liam pressed tight. I know this feeling won’t last, but I suddenly want to hold on to every second I can of this experience, until it leaves me.

I reach out and curl my fingers around his forearms. My eyes growing wide when his brow lifts. With a quick push I rock up and close the distance that is left between our mouths. When my lips touch his, that feeling of being alive burns so bright every nerve in my body feels it, each inch of skin boiling and cooling so quickly it’s as if I can’t make up my mind if I want to be hot or cold. My hairs stand on end, my skin pebbles – going cold before rushing heat fills my veins, and the very thump of my heart seems to skip a beat the second our lips touch.

One thing I know for sure. I want this. I want this and Liam’s going to give it to me.

He doesn’t pause. His groan vibrating against my chest only lights the feeling that is firing through my skin. My hands move from his forearms and I run my hands up his chest until both hands curl around his neck and I use the hold to pull my body even closer to his.

His hands move from my hips and he curls them around my bottom, pulling me tightly against his body. When I feel the very obvious sign of his attraction, I moan deeply, and shiver when he answers with one of his own.

I can’t tell you how long this kiss lasts. When his tongue moves to swipe against my lips, I open without reservation. We continue, our tongues dancing together while each of our moans are swallowed by the other, until I have to pull away to gulp a breath of air before I pass out – however, the way I feel right now, passing out might very well be a possibility.

“This is finally happening,” he snarls in a tone that should scare me, but all it does is act as kerosene to our already uncontrollable fire of lust.

“It is,” I agree without question.

“Now,” he says.

“Okay,” I agree on a sigh and sway toward his hard body.

With the encouragement he needs, his hands finally leave my body. He turns me, wraps one thick arm around my shoulder, and turns to walk toward the front of the house.

“We’re leaving?” I question lamely.

“Darlin’ I didn’t stutter. This is happening,” he says, pausing when he reaches the side of the house and the shadows that will give us the privacy we need. His body turns, moving me to stand before him once again. “I need to know you’re with me, Megan. I’ve wanted this since the day I met you, but I knew you weren’t ready for me. I’ve been trying to keep my distance, just waiting for those clouds to leave your eyes. If you don’t want me to take you back to my house, strip you naked and fuck you until you can’t walk for weeks, then say so now, because the second I have you I won’t be letting go.”

“Oh, boy,” I whisper.

“I prefer oh God, but I’ll make that the first item on my to-do list.”

“You’ll make what?”

“My to-do list, Megs. The list of things I’ve wanted to do to you for months now. Making you scream oh God will be number one, followed by my name, of course.”

“Oh, God,” I repeat, my mind swilling with the promise his words inflict.

“Yeah, you’re getting it.”

His mouth crashes down on mine for a hard but quick kiss before pulling back and giving me another one of those knee-melting smirks. “Last chance, Megan,” he whispers while his hands are framing my heated face.

Whatever he sees in my eyes is enough, he gives me a light kiss, takes his hands from my face and curls one around my left hand and pulls me toward his truck.

Fighting Shadows Review

Every time I sit down to read a new book by Aly Martinez, I know that I am going to be reading a story that will give me everything. I know I’ll get extraordinary characters I’ll love fiercely, a story that gives and gives and then gives some more, and that I’m going to be feeling every ounce of that amazingly crafted book whole heartedly.

I got all of that and more while reading Fighting Shadows, the second book in her On The Ropes Series.

The instant I started it I knew I was going to love this story. After practically devouring Fighting Silence, I knew that this book would likely win me over in a nanosecond, and boy was I right on that one. Fighting Shadows was phenomenally intense, enrapturing as all get out, with so much outstanding emotion and feeling weaving its way breathtakingly throughout the pages of this book.

When I was reading Fighting Shadows, I wanted to fist pump in the air while simultaneously happy dancing because of what it allowed me to experience with its characters while I was reading. Even when it tried to rip my heart out because of what these characters were going through, I still wanted to happy dance and fist pump because I was so unbelievably connected to what they were going through. That was all possible because of how superbly Aly Martinez wrote and created this book, and Ash and Flint’s characters.

Fighting Shadows tells the story of Flint Page and Ash Mabie, two dynamic characters with some serious pasts and one serious connection, and it follows them both as they explore the ups and downs and turn arounds that their immense feelings bring. This book stole my heart the minute I began reading it. It had it all, and it was all nothing short of wonderful.

What was utterly fantastic about Fighting Shadows:

  • Flint Page’s intensity. Flint Page is one intense man. And that is putting it mildly. You get to experience that intensity full force, and you get to see how that intensity just makes him who he is, and how it effects the choices he makes. That intensity is heated, powerful, and has a very strong stubborn streak, but that just made me love his character more because it just fit him, especially with all that he goes through. That intensity came from him in so many outstanding and remarkable ways, and it just allowed me to see so many different sides to his character. I got every bit of intense Flint Page, and I relished in all of that intensity while reading.
  • Ash Mabie is a girl to remember. Ash Mabie is the best kind of quirky. She’s definitely different, is bursting with life and color and vibrancy, and will say just about the first thing that comes to her mind, even if it sounds completely ridiculous. I absolutely loved that girl to pieces. I loved her because she wasn’t afraid to just be her, and she completely owned who she was. I loved her because there was such an effervescent goodness beaming out of her, and I was in awe of the effect that goodness had on those around her. (Especially Flint!) I also just loved her because she was so unique and so fun, and I hearted that refreshing remarkability something fierce.
  • Holy effing fiery connection. Flint and Ash share a connection that is intense and spark filled, and you will feel it the instant these two come around one another. Their chemistry is off the charts, and I thought the way that Aly Martinez showed that connection and how it developed over the course of the book was fantastic. I also could not get enough of what that passionate and fiery connection brought out in both of them, because that connection, that chemistry, and that heat made Ash and Flint realize a whole heck of a lot. And that was the best.
  • The shadows of the past. One of the many things that made this book so fantastic was the shadows of the past that both of these characters had, especially Flint. The way that his past is explained, the way that that in turn affects his present in the story with himself and with Ash, and then how that past alters the course of this story was just phenomenal. Learning and getting to experience both Ash and Flint’s shadow laden pasts gave me such an extraordinary understanding of their characters. It also led to so many heart squeezing moments for them both where I wanted to jump into the book and give them both a big old hug.
  • All the vulnerability they put out there. Both Ash and Flint’s characters have many incredible instances in Fighting Shadows where their vulnerability emanates from them. Those were the moments that just made this book for me, the moments that seared Ash and Flint and their story to my heart. Those moments when those walls came down, and they put themselves truly out there. It was in those moments that I realized so much about them both because of what they were experiencing and putting out there in those moments of true and utterly breathtaking vulnerability.
  • The fight and determination that defines these characters. As you would probably expect, this book has all kinds of wonderful fight in it. Both of these characters are fighting their own personal shadows that’ll break your heart, their fighting with and for that all-consuming connection they’re sharing, and they’re fighting for themselves and one another. Even in those moments when it seems like what they’re going through is going to do them in, these two fight. They give it all they’ve got, and that is truly amazing to experience and feel. I guarantee you’re going to love all of that fight and what it brings out in both Ash and Flint.
  • Heart bursting moments. There are many moments in Fighting Shadows that will simultaneously break, squeeze, and melt your heart because of what Ash and Flint are going through together and apart. Those moments highlight how fiercely connected you are to these characters and their story to because of what you’re feeling right along with them. Your heart will definitely be feeling every ounce of emotion and feeling thoughtfully crafted in this book. Your heart will be happy, it will hurt like hell at times, and it’ll go to these characters more times than you’ll be able to count, and you will relish in that heartfelt connection you feel.
  • All the authentic charm and gut busting humor. There is humor and charm bursting out of this story. Those humorous moments were the best kind of breakup to all that phenomenal tension going on in this book. That humor and charm had me smiling like crazy and laughing my butt off more times than I could count. Much of that came from Ash, but a lot of it came from Flint, as well as the other wonderfully distinctive characters that make up the authentic world of this book.
  • Page brothers for the win! So I am under the distinct impression that the Page brothers are officially some of the best brothers around. Till, Flint, and Quarry are just amazing. They’re each fantastically distinctive, and their interactions together warmed my heart because you know that these three are just there for each other through it all. Those brothers have such a shared connection through their pasts and what they go through, and it was just extraordinary to fully feel that brotherly love between them again. I can also not wait to get my hand on Quarry’s book after this one. I need his story in my life, like yesterday.

I will never forget reading Fighting Shadows, and what it was like to experience the pure literary magic that it created. I won’t ever forget Ash or Flint, or their fight to overcome the darkness, or their attempts at healing. I won’t forget how much I rooted for them, how much I loved them fiercely, and how much I wanted them to find that light they both so truly deserved. I won’t ever forget anything about this book because that’s how utterly extraordinary it is.

This is a book that stays with you in some way, shape, or form. It stays with you, it makes you feel every magnificently and thoughtfully crafted thing, and it gives you two characters who will permanently own a piece of your heart.

That piece is bursting with the perfect amount of humor, charm and ridiculousness, so much raw vulnerability and authenticity, and more glorious fight and stubbornness than you can shake a stick at. That piece is wholly unique, definitely different in the best kind of way, and vibrant as all get out because that’s what this book is. That’s what these characters are, and that’s what reading and experiencing Fighting Shadows is like.

Something also tells me that the piece of my heart that Flint Page and Ash Mabie now forever own is filled with stars and weeds and newsies and neon green converses. It’s a place where dreams go on for days, and where Eye of the Tiger plays on full blast all day long.

That is one distinctive and beautifully vibrant piece that I will always love fiercely. Once you read this unforgettable book, I think you’ll agree that that piece of your heart that these characters and their story now own is something you’ll always treasure, and will truly never want to let go of. Ever.

Flint and Ash Excerpt

“Hey, Flint? What time is it?” Quarry asked.

Ash’s smile actually slipped completely. For the briefest of seconds, she appeared almost ashamed.

I dragged my eyes away from her in order to answer his question, but as I looked at my wrist, I had no answer at all.

“Here,” she said as she pulled my watch from her pocket.

What. The. Fuck?

Quarry howled with laughter, and Ash chewed on her bottom lip.

“Explain,” I demanded, wrapping my watch back around my wrist and shoving my wallet in the front pocket of my hoodie.

Quarry filled in the blank. “She’s a pickpocket, dude. You should have seen her when she fell on your lap. It was so fucking fast. She straight-up stole that shit from you, and you had no fucking clue.”

“I didn’t steal it! I was gonna give it back,” she amended uncomfortably. “It was just a joke.”

A joke.

  1. Fucking. Joke.

And just like that, I remembered why I didn’t laugh anymore.

“Was it funny? Stealing from the cripple? You get a good laugh out of that?” I snapped, spinning and rolling myself away. “You know, maybe my judgment of you wasn’t all that off to begin with. Like father, like daughter, I guess.” It was a low blow, but I felt completely betrayed by a woman I didn’t even know.

“Flint, wait. I wasn’t picking on the cripple!”

I fully realized that I had just used the term, but it enraged me that she’d had the audacity to repeat it back to me. Who the hell was this chick? I pushed a hand into my pocket, searching for my keys. Fuck the food. I’d leave her ass there. Hell, Quarry too if he didn’t get his ass to the car.

“Get in the car, Q!” I yelled, only to close my eyes and drop my chin to my chest when my hand never made contact on the keys. “Son of a bitch,” I said as I spun back around.

Quarry was laughing next to her, but Ash’s cheeks were bright red.

“Keys.” I snapped my fingers and opened my hand, palm up.

“Stop being a dick,” Quarry said, casually tossing an arm around Ash’s shoulders.

She didn’t budge as she held my glare.

“Keys,” I repeated, but she remained still.

“It was a joke.” Her chin began to quiver.

For fuck’s sake, I wasn’t in any kind of mood to deal with bullshit from some girl I didn’t even know and was quickly discovering I didn’t care to know, either.

Quarry’s eyes grew wide as she turned to him and buried her cries in his chest.

What the fuck, asshole! Q signed before rubbing his hands over her back.

Her shoulders shook as she let out a loud sob that shocked us both.

“Come on. Let’s sit down.” Q tried to guide her over to an empty table.

Ash refused to look up and tripped over one of the chairs.

“Shit,” Q said, catching her around the waist.

I was just about to roll my eyes when she glanced my way. He was still trying to get her back on her feet and over to a table when her tear-free, bright-blue eyes pointedly glanced in my direction. My head snapped back in surprise, but a smile grew on her face.

Ash was about to put on a show, and with that one look, she had invited me to have a front-row seat.

As she floundered all over Quarry, her hands slid between his pockets and her own. Every noise she made and each time she flailed covered up a jarring movement. She was keeping his mind too busy for it to process all the places she was touching him. Hell, I was only watching her and I could barely keep up.

There was no denying that it was entertaining, but I wasn’t willing to show her that. However, as she accidentally lifted her knee, catching Q in the balls, a laugh erupted from my throat. He cupped his crotch while she apologized profusely and pushed him toward the same chair he’d been dragging her to only seconds before. Just before he sat, Ash swung her arm out, unwinding Q’s belt from around his body before tossing it at me.

“Oh God. I’m so sorry!” she said as Quarry held a finger up to ask for a second to recover. She didn’t wait at all though. Instead, she walked over in my direction; her prideful smile grew with every step.

She pulled my keys out of her pocket and dropped them into my lap. They were quickly followed by Quarry’s phone, wallet, and house keys. Then she snagged his belt off the floor and tossed it over her shoulder.

“It had absolutely nothing to do with you being in a wheelchair. It was a joke and it wasn’t supposed to piss you off.”

“Hey!” Quarry yelled. “That was messed up. You did not have to knee me in the balls to prove a point to him.”

“Oh, that wasn’t to prove a point. That was for bullshitting me. You knew good and damn well that he wouldn’t find it funny,” she said without ever tearing her gaze from mine. “Look, I’m sorry. I don’t have a lot of friends. And I’ve mentally noted that pickpocketing might not be the best way to make new ones.” She shrugged. “Consider it a lesson learned.”

“Three burgers all the way, onion rings, and a shake?” the guy at the counter called out.

Ash arched an eyebrow. “You want it to go, or are we good?”

I didn’t have to drop my attitude. Sure, she’d apologized, but while I might have had a short fuse, I also had a hell of a long burn. However, as she stood in front of me with her arms crossed over her chest and her blue eyes pleading for forgiveness, it magically fell away.

I swallowed hard. “No. We’re good.”

“You sure?” She leaned in, eyeing me warily, but her smile began to grow.

I swear to God it pulled at my lips as well. I fought it. But the harder I tried to keep it restrained, the bigger Ash’s grew. She was stealing my smile. The chick was good! Finally, with an eye roll, I let out a quiet chuckle, which seemed to appease her.

“Good. Now, help your brother get redressed and I’ll make the fancy sauce.” She waggled her eyebrows.

A Family Justice Novel

Synopsis2

Angelina Marquez: Event Planner for lack of a better description, Full-time piece of work, Alex’s little sister

Home in Arizona after an extended absence, Angie Marquez lands smack in the middle of Family Justice. Crossing continents to take on the planning for Meghan and Alex’s upcoming wedding, her happy return to the home of her youth also has a hidden reason…to either scratch an old itch or put it to rest once and for all.

And the name of that itch? Parker Sullivan.

What’s one more Alpha at this point?

Self-styled badass with a guitar and plenty of brawn artfully disguised as a successful lawyer, Parker Sullivan comes to Family Justice as Alex’s boyhood friend and the keeper of quite a few tall tales from their youth.

He’s also been secretly in love with Angelina Marquez since he could remember.

The problem?  She refuses to speak to him…and for good reason.

Angie’s unexpected return to Sedona brings her and Parker face-to-face for the first time since their clandestine relationship crashed and burned years earlier.

Older, wiser and still deeply attracted to the powerful lawyer, she hoped that they could be friends again. But they had a lot to resolve, it wasn’t that easy and their messy relationship was affecting everyone.

My Review

****4.5 Absolutely Wonderful Stars****

Suzanne Halliday’s books are hands down some of my favorites. Every time a new book of hers comes out, I cannot wait to get my hands on it, and that is especially true with her Justice Brothers books. I seriously cannot get enough of this series, and I loved every word that I got to read in Desert Angel, the newest addition to her Family Justice Series that follows all the Justice Brothers after the events of their own books.

I love this author’s books to pieces, and I love me some Justice Brothers something fierce! I have loved these characters since I met them, and it was beyond fantastic to get to spend more time with each and every one of them. There is just such a feeling of family to these books, such a feeling of love and loyalty that just emanates from their outstanding pages. The feeling and emotions and just experiences that Suzanne Halliday creates and lets you experience so fully in Desert Angel, along with her other books, is nothing short of wonderful and it just reminds me over and over again why I absolutely love her books.

Desert Angel tells the story of what happens when Parker, one of Alex Marquez’s oldest friends, is reunited with Angie Marquez, Alex’s sister. These two definitely have one heck of past together that you begin to learn more about as their story unfolds. I loved getting to know both of them over the course of this book, and I especially loved how Suzanne Halliday revealed their past over the course of Desert Angel. She did it in such a way that allowed you to feel everything Parker and Angie were sharing in the present tense of the book, while also giving you the background to what got them to where they were together.

You got the past and present weaving together in such an extraordinary way, giving you all of their feelings and desires and connection, all of their worries and doubts, and all of their hopes and wants, as they tried to figure out where they would go from the events of this book.

My favorite part of this book was getting to know Parker and Angie. They had one intense connection, and you could just feel the depth and strength of the pull and connection those two shared. It was heated, it was passionate, and it was bursting with so much glorious feeling. Experiencing Parker and Angie’s connection and draw to one another in Desert Angel just made me truly believe in everything they shared, everything they were trying to figure out, and everything they were fighting for.

Parker is one hot as all get out lawyer that instantly won me over. He was intense and stubborn as all get out, and it was so fantastic to learn all that I did about his character. He totally stole my heart while I was reading this book, and I loved getting to experience everything that happened with him in this book, especially with Angie. One of my favorite things about his character was that he wasn’t afraid to own up to the mistakes he had made in the past. He was honest, with his past and with his desire for Angie, and that completely warmed my heart and made me root for him from the  get go.

Angie was such a fantastic female character to read!! She was fiery and sassy and wasn’t afraid to say what was exactly on her mind. She had some serious spunk, and I definitely connected and respected that immensely in her character. I also just found her to be so easy to relate to when I was reading. I felt so connected to her character and all that she goes through and experiences in this story, and I really felt like I got to feel and understand everything she did because of how phenomenally this author wrote and developed her character. Angie just felt so extremely real to me as I read this book, and I thought she was just an overall strong, well developed, and very engaging female character who I just loved to pieces.

The push and pull between these characters is fantastic and it just brings their characters to life in such an amazing way. The more you read, the more you get to know about them both and what happened in the past. As you read this book you also feel their connection and chemistry building and building, and let me tell you that when it all explodes, it is nothing short of mesmerizing. There were definitely some moments in this book that had me blushing like crazy in the best way. What I loved about feeling and experiencing Parker and Angie’s relationship was that you got to see such evolution in it, that really highlighted the depth of their feelings.

That’s something that continues to blow me away whenever I read one of Suzanne Halliday’s books. She gives you two phenomenal, thoughtfully crafted and dynamic characters, and she lets you get their full story and evolution over the course of their story. You see how they are in the beginning and you become enraptured in their journey as a character, as well as their journey in the relationship they are embarking on. You get to know them, you get to understand them so truly, and you fall seriously in love with their characters and all that they go through. You also get every brilliant thought, emotion, and feeling that goes along with that.

One of my favorite aspects of this book was getting to spend time with all of my favorite characters from this series, while falling in love with Angie and Parker. I loved all of the interaction that these characters had together, and like I said before, Suzanne Halliday just creates those interactions and bonds and friendships in a way that just leaves you feeling whole. You truly get everything from this family of characters, and my heart was so full of all of them as I read and enjoyed this book. Those interactions had me smiling like crazy and blushing like a fool more times than I could count. They also had me laughing hysterically more times than I could count because of what came out of those characters mouths. It also just warmed my heart to see and experience them all together once again. I basked in everything I got with these wonderfully distinctive characters, and I cannot wait for more from this set of unforgettable characters.

I simply love this author’s writing style, and how it pulls me right into the stories with these characters. It’s so easy to feel and experience everything that they do, and to just connect fully to these characters because of how she writes her books. You feel and think and experience everything that these characters do because of how outstandingly she writes her books. I loved how immersed I felt in this book, and it just made this story so enrapturing because I was so fully connected into it in every way.

Desert Angel was just a fantastic addition to this series. I loved getting to know Parker and Angie’s characters, and getting to experience the two of them try to figure out what in the world they were sharing, and where they could go with the feelings they shared. Parker and Angie’s story definitely has some ups and downs and twists and turns, and it is busting with the perfect amount of feeling, desire, and fight for that magic and connection they share.  I completely believed in what Parker and Angie were fighting for (and sometimes against, cough cough Angie) in Desert Angel, and I adored every moment I got with them in this book.

Desert Angel gave me more time with the characters that I love, gave me the chance to fall in love with two new characters who I instantly loved and rooted for, and it allowed me to experience so many wonderful things with all of these unforgettable and seriously charming characters. This book gives you all the heat, some definite laughs, and more love and desire than you can shake a stick at. It gives you everything, and I for one loved every bit.

I seriously cannot wait for more from this phenomenal author, and this fantastic series in the future as they have both definitely become some of my favorites!

Summer of Series: The Blackstone Affair by Raine Miller

Background

I am so excited that my Summer of Series has finally begun! I couldn’t be more thrilled with the first series I chose to read because I practically devoured it (in 2 days!). So without further ado, let me introduce you to The Blackstone Affair by the utterly fabulous Raine Miller.

This series was breathtaking, all-consuming, and had the perfect balance of emotion, feeling, and intensity.

It also had me ready to catch the very next plane to London in hopes that I could find my very own Ethan Blackstone, because let me tell you he will totally steal your heart and win you over about 2 seconds after you meet him. Not to be outdone, Brynne the main lady of the hour, will have you rooting for her, loving her, and feeling so authentically connected to her just as quickly. The Blackstone Affair follows these two dynamic and exceptionally developed characters, as they try to overcome their own trauma laced pasts in hopes of seeing what could happen if they explore the majorly intense connection they share.

What I think I loved about this series the most was that I got to experience everything so fully with both Ethan and Brynne, and I truly got to feel and see their evolution as characters as their relationship progressed. I got to see them at their highest, and I got to enjoy that immense joy and elation right along with them. I felt and saw them at their lowest points, and my heart broke just like theirs did with what they went through in both the past and present. I was also their with them through all the twists and turns and ups and downs that came their way as they tried to make their relationship work.

I loved that this series gives you two extremely authentic, strong willed, and multifaceted characters who had their flaws right along with their strengths.  Two people who had experienced darkness, and were still working through that with everything they had. What Ethan and Brynne both individually went through will make your heart go to them, but it will also make them feel very very real to you as you get to know and fall in love with them.

Naked

I also had the phenomenal opportunity to experience how hard Brynne and Ethan fell because I fell right along with them, heart first into everything that they were sharing. I got their passion, their heat, and their seriously spark filled relationship. I melted at their words. I swooned with them more times than I could count. I also felt all of the heartbreak that came along with those heart melting moments.

These books are written and developed exceptionally. Raine Miller’s outstanding writing allows you to fall right into the story with Ethan and Brynne. Her writing also makes it possible to become as captivated by Brynne and Ethan as they are by each other, and throughout each book in this series you will become more and more connected to them both. You will feel for them, you will care for them, and you will fight like hell for them and for what they’re fighting for. That extraordinary level of connection to this story and book is all possible because of Raine Miller’s magnificent writing. The world she creates in this series through her incredible storytelling and writing feels wholly real, and the minute you begin these books you will be imagining, feeling, and experiencing everything that enchanting and utterly mesmerizing world has to offer.

I felt every word of these books.  I experienced every single thoughtfully crafted and varied emotion weaving its way through these mesmerizing books. I was whole heartedly captivated by these extraordinary characters and their unforgettable story.

The Blackstone Affair was a superbly balanced and beautifully written love story that gives the perfect amount of love and joy, heartbreak and hurt, passion and intensity, and more charm and swoon than you can shake a stick at, as Brynne and Ethan explore the power and beauty of the connection and feelings they share for one another.

Ethan and Brynne, and their story together will blow you away. It’ll leave you in awe with what you get to experience with them. You will love their characters, be rooting for them like crazy along the way, and relishing in all of the fight and determination these two have to be together.

I promise you that this series will consume every part of you. It will steal your heart, and give you so much to feel and experience. It will enrapture you within its magnificence, and you will not want it to end. Ever.

When the magnetic, mysterious Jonah Marks learns her secret, he makes an offer that stuns her: they will remain near-strangers to each other, and meet in secret so that he can fulfill her fantasy.

Their arrangement is twisted. The sex is incredible. And—despite their attempts to stay apart—soon their emotions are bound together as tightly as the rope around Vivienne’s wrists. But the secrets in their pasts threaten to turn their affair even darker…

Reader Advisory: Asking for It deals explicitly with fantasies of non-consensual sex. Readers sensitive to portrayals of non-consensual sex should be advised.

Asking For It My Review*****5 Mind Blowing Stars*****

I don’t know if I’ve ever read a book as provocative, intense, and thought provoking as Asking For It by Lilah Pace. It definitely pushes the limits a bit, and probably isn’t for the faint of heart, but do not let that deter you one bit from this phenomenal book. It is heated beyond measure, exceptionally written, and tells a unique story laced with so many glorious and superbly crafted emotions.

That is just part of what makes this book a truly exceptional read.

The moment I began this book, I was captivated by every enrapturing word, and I could not resist the effervescent pull of it. From start to finish I was hooked into the darkly laced world this book creates, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with what this book and its characters gave me as I read it.

This book will consume you. It will pull you into its enthralling world, and you will be thinking about this story long after you’ve finished it because it is that good. Asking For It will make you question what is happening in this story, what is okay and what might not be so okay, and it’ll break through every single thought you had on the topics and ideas covered in this utterly magnificent book.

Asking For It tells the story of Vivienne, a twenty something who fantasizes about being taken by force. She wants to be dominated. Owned. Claimed. This author does an extraordinary job of showing the many facets to Vivienne’s desires and fantasies. She explains the how and the why, and you just get it. I cannot say enough good things about how outstandingly this author explores the fantasies that Vivienne has, and the many reasoning’s behind them.

As you delve into the thoughtfully crafted pages of Vivienne’s story, you get to know more about her and where her fantasies stem from. I have to say that I found Vivienne’s character to be extremely authentic and downright refreshing because of how honest and open her character is in this book. In Asking For It, you get to see Vivienne at her most vulnerable, in her rawest and truest form, and that is truly remarkable to experience.

There were so many instances in this book where my heart just went to Vivienne because of what she was experiencing, what she was thinking, and what she was going through and feeling as the events of this book and the past unfolded. I loved her, was intrigued by her, felt for her, and just wanted to know everything I could about her as I got to know her character. The more I learned about her, the more I felt so immensely connected to her as she navigates the murky waters of what happens when she finally finds the person who can fulfill those dark fantasies she has.

That’s when Jonah Marks comes into the story, and let me tell you right now that you will not be able to resist the magnetic pull from that man. From the instant you meet his character you will be drawn to the force and power that is him, just like Vivienne is. Jonah is mysterious as all get out, sexy as hell, and he will have you reaching for your fan in no time, but more than that, Jonah is an enigmatic character that will get your heart beating rapidly and your mind moving just as fast.

The moment you meet Jonah, you’ll want to know more about him. You’ll want to know why he is so drawn to Vivienne and the fantasies that she has. You’ll want to know what in life has lead him to sharing similar desires. You’ll also want to know more about his past, who he really is, and why he is that way. Basically, the more you experience Jonah’s strong and seriously engaging character, the more you will want to know every single thing you can about him, and the dark and twisty path that got him to the present of this story.

While this book is told solely from Vivienne’s perspective, I felt that this author really gave me the chance to see the many sides to Jonah’s character in addition to hers. Through the heart racing events that take place in this book, you learn more about him, his motives, and you see the vulnerable side to him as well. The raw, honest, and extremely real side that you see of him in Asking For It is nothing short of wonderful, and allows you some very real glimpses into who in the world Jonah Marks is.

When Vivienne and Jonah begin to explore their fantasies together it is extremely heated. It’s explosive, a bit on the dark side, and filled with the perfect amount of fire, desire, and roughness. The connection between these two characters is magnetic to say the least. It’s vibrant and powerful, and soon they find themselves having more of an emotional connection than they ever expected. They start to really feel things, very real things and very real emotions, and where those feelings takes Vivienne and Jonah is mind blowing and heart pulling.

Their relationship will definitely make you think. A lot. It will make you want to know how the dynamics of it all work. It’ll have you biting your nails like crazy as you wait to see where it’s all headed. It’ll have your heart practically thumping out of your chest as you become more and more consumed by what they’re sharing. Their relationship is different to say the least, but the thoughts, feelings, emotions, and reactions it brings out over the course of this story in them and in you as the reader will completely leave you in awe.

Sheer, all consuming, heart palpating, unadulterated, mind bending awe.

The more I read this book, the more I loved every phenomenal word, feeling, and reaction that it gave me. Asking For It brought up so many thoughts in my mind, and it took over every available space in my brain and heart during and after reading it. That is just one of the many things that reiterated how utterly fantastic this book is in every way, shape, and form.

Asking For It allowed me so many different experiences too. It gave me a plethora of varied and thoughtfully crafted emotions to experience through all of the twist and turns in this story. It gave me so many intense moments, and some seriously shocking “oh my goodness” moments too. (Believe me, there are many moments in this book that will make your jaw drop, and I don’t mean because of the fantasies Jonah and Vivienne are sharing.) It also gave me two dynamic characters and a multitude of outstanding supporting characters that made this story something I truly could not get enough of.

This book definitely pushes the boundaries, but that is just part of what makes it so exceptional. Lilah Pace takes on many twisty, dark, and intriguing topics in this book, and she does so with a superb level of writing, character development, and storytelling. I cannot wait to get my hands on the follow up to this novel. I so look forward to being consumed once again by Vivienne, Jonah, and their intensely consuming story.

Take a leap of faith, and read this phenomenally captivating book. Let it bend your mind a bit, and let it give you something to think about, something to feel whole heartedly, and something that is sure to set your heart on fire repeatedly. It’ll blow you away if you let it. That leap of faith is so immensely worth it, and will give you a story unlike any other. Trust me.

My Review

*****5 Unforgettable Stars*****

Forget by N. A. Alcorn tells the story of Brooke, an American visiting Paris, who meets and starts to fall heart first for Dylan, a half British half French swoon worthy musician. It follows these two as their serious sparks start to fly, and they find themselves having many more feelings than either of them planned for.

I have to say that I loved every single phenomenally vibrant word of this book.

I loved Brooke and how fantastically authentic and truly wonderful she was. I loved Dylan and was completely under his charming spell in about a nanosecond. I loved that I laughed hysterically more times than I could count. I loved all of the varied and thoughtfully crafted emotion and heat and vulnerability that weaved its way so superbly throughout this book. I loved how music played such an integral part to the plot, to these characters, and to all they experience.

I loved everything.

It was just phenomenal to experience from beginning to end, and I couldn’t get enough of Brooke and Dylan and their heart squeezing story. This author’s outstanding writing brought these two and their book world to life, and I for one cannot wait for the chance to spend more times with these utterly amazing characters.

What was absolutely unforgettable about Forget:

  • Brooke’s vulnerability. Brooke was such a fantastic character to get to know, and I loved that I got to know the “real” her over the course of this story. You see many sides to Brooke, the side she puts up to protect herself and then the side that is really her. As you read Forget you will really get to know the real Brooke, aka Paris Brooke, and her vulnerability and rawness will just blow you away because of what it exemplifies about her. She is just so real, and the more you read the more you’ll understand why Brooke is the way she is. When you find out what this girl has gone through, and what she goes through in this book your heart will instantly go to her.
  • Dylan’s bursting with charm. Now Dylan’s charming self practically stole my heart the instant he and Brooke meet. That man is sweet, and seriously stinking hot, and did I mention the fact that he’s a musician? The more you get to know Dylan’s character the more you’ll want to spend time with him just like Brooke because the pull and just magic that is him is irresistible. That man also feels so much, and I loved the instances in which I got into his head to really feel everything that he does. I am telling you now that there is no way that you can resist him, especially when you start to feel and experience what he shares with Brooke.
  • A firework level connection and pull. Let me tell you that these two had an instant connection that this author phenomenally creates. You feel it the instant they meet and their connection just pulls you into them because of the sparks these two share. It is fiery, it is hot as all get out, and it just burns off the page in such a way that brings a certain kind of blush to your face. It also just makes you realize the power of what these two share together.
  • The power of Millie. Now Millie just might be my favorite character in this book, behind Dylan and Brooke of course. I loved that lady and the wisdom and meaning that surrounded her. The words that she shared, the memories she evokes, and just the power that is her is just beautiful and so utterly meaningful. The power of Millie will just warm your heart. It’ll make you think and feel and wonder about the possibilities this world holds, and it’ll make you want to live your life the way that Millie did, with no regrets. Trust me on that one!
  • The magic of Paris. N.A. Alcorn does an outstanding job of capturing the magical city of Paris. That city is almost like a third main character in this book, and I loved that I was fully encapsulated within the magic it evoked throughout this entire book. That magic just brought this book and these characters to life because I felt like I was right there with them feeling and experiencing that vibrant feel of the city with them, which was extraordinary to experience while reading.
  • The questions that come up along the way. Now this book brings up a lot of questions, some of which are answered and some of which aren’t. (But stay tuned folks because there’s a book 2 that I cannot wait for!) I loved how those questions perfectly came up throughout what was happening with Brooke and Dylan. Those questions intrigued me and made me that much more enthralled with what I was reading because I couldn’t wait to figure out what was going to happen next, and if I was going to get an answer to one of those fantastic questions I had. Those questions pull you into this story heart first, and while you don’t get all the answers yet, you do get enough to realize that there is so much more to these characters than meets the eye, especially with Brooke, and that is utterly wonderful to experience.
  • The honesty. Honesty plays an interesting and phenomenal role in Forget. There are so many raw and vulnerable moments from both of these characters where they are both so fantastically honest. Moments where they put it all out there on display for the other to see. Then there are moments where there’s not so much honesty, where you know there is more going on beneath the surface, and those moments are just as telling. Those moments surrounding honesty fit so magnificently into the story, and just illuminated so much about Brooke and Dylan.
  • All the laughs a girl could ask for. Having read all of N.A. Alcorn’s other books, I was none too surprised to find myself laughing hysterically more often than not in this book. Through Brooke’s inner thoughts, her conversations with her best friend Lindsay, and through some seriously engaging moments with Dylan, I could not stop laughing at what was being said. That laughter broke up the tension and build in this book so fantastically, and it just made me love reading this book because of the laughs that it brought.
  • More emotion than you can shake a stick at. This book had an outstanding level of varied emotion in it thanks to the phenomenal writing of this author. You get to feel every single thing these characters do, and even better you understand why they’re feeling it. The level of emotion in this book allows you feel Brooke and Dylan’s story on a whole new level. You hurt with them, you love with them, and you care with them. You feel everything with them and that makes this book all the more extraordinary to read.

Brooke, Dylan, their lively, music filled, and superbly emotional story will have you feeling and thinking and caring like crazy. It’ll give you moments that’ll make you laugh, moments that will squeeze your heart because of what these two experience and go through, and moments that will break you and simultaneously send your heart to these characters because of what they go through.

Forget will give you so much of everything that makes a book an extraordinary read. The way that N.A. Alcorn crafts this story allows you the outstanding opportunity to take it all in and to feel every word of it deep in your heart. When you reach that last page you will literally be counting down the days until you can become fully encapsulated within the magic and connection that emanates so beautifully from it.

This story and Brooke and Dylan will engage you right from the start, and even in those moments in this book that kind of make you want to scream and possibly throw your Kindle clear across the room, you will be oh so happy at what those two and their extraordinary story give you as the reader.

You’ll want to take in every beautiful, mesmerizing, heart squeezing, and lively moment Forget gives you, because what you get is nothing short of amazing.

Synopsis2

She said I was like a song. Her favorite song. A song isn’t something you can see. It’s something you feel, something you move to, something that disappears after the last note is played.

I won my first fight when I was eleven years old, and I’ve been throwing punches ever since. Fighting is the purest, truest, most elemental thing there is. Some people describe heaven as a sea of unending white. Where choirs sing and loved ones await. But for me, heaven was something else. It sounded like the bell at the beginning of a round, it tasted like adrenaline, it burned like sweat in my eyes and fire in my belly. It looked like the blur of screaming crowds and an opponent who wanted my blood.

For me, heaven was the octagon.

Until I met Millie, and heaven became something different. I became something different. I knew I loved her when I watched her stand perfectly still in the middle of a crowded room, people swarming, buzzing, slipping around her, her straight dancer’s posture unyielding, her chin high, her hands loose at her sides. No one seemed to see her at all, except for the few who squeezed past her, tossing exasperated looks at her unsmiling face. When they realized she wasn’t normal, they hurried away. Why was it that no one saw her, yet she was the first thing I saw?

If heaven was the octagon, then she was my angel at the center of it all, the girl with the power to take me down and lift me up again. The girl I wanted to fight for, the girl I wanted to claim. The girl who taught me that sometimes the biggest heroes go unsung and the most important battles are the ones we don’t think we can win.

**This is David ‘Tag’ Taggert’s book, a supporting character introduced in The Law of Moses. This is a stand-alone story.

Excerpt

Amelie and Henry didn’t come by the gym the next day. On Saturday, I thought I saw them once, beyond the wall of windows along the front of the gym, but when I looked again they were gone. I shrugged, deciding Henry must not have been as excited by the idea as Amelie thought he would be. A few minutes later I looked up to see them hovering near the speed bags, Amelie holding firmly to Henry’s arm, Henry looking as if he was about to bolt and drag his poor sister with him. They were garnering some strange looks—Henry with his crazy bedhead, his darting glances, and jittery hands and Amelie because she stood so still and looked so out of place in a gym filled with muscles and men.

I called a quick halt to my bout, escaping Axel, who was trying to pummel me into next week, and slid between the ropes that cordoned off one of the octagons.

“Amelie! Henry!” I called, noting how Amelie’s face was immediately wreathed in a relieved smile, a smile so wide it spread to her eyes, giving the illusion of sparkle and life. But Henry started backing up, pulling his sister with him.

“Yo, Henry. Hold up, man.” I stopped several feet from them and lowered my voice. “Did you know that Jack Dempsey versus Jess Willard was the very first fight to be broadcast over the radio?”

Henry stopped moving and his hands stilled.

“Do you know what year that was, Henry?”

“1919,” Henry said in a whisper. “The first televised fight was in 1931. Benny Leonard vs. Mickey Walker.”

“I didn’t know that.” Actually, I had only known about the Dempsey, Willard fight because I’d seen a biography on Dempsey on Netflix the night before. God bless Netflix. The mention of the radio had made me think of Henry and the sportscast blaring from his bedroom. “You wanna tell me more?”

“David ‘Tag’ Taggert, light heavyweight contender with a professional record of eighteen wins, two losses, ten knock outs.”

“You checked up on me, huh?”

Henry’s mouth twitched, and he looked away shyly.

“You did! What else did you find out? That all the ladies love me, that I’m the best looking fighter, pound for pound, in the universe?”

Henry looked confused for a second, and I realized he was searching his mind for that stat. I laughed. “Just kidding, buddy.”

“Six-foot three, 215 pounds, most often compared to Forrest Griffin and Michael Bisping?” Henry’s voice rose on the end, clearly seeking approval.

“I’m more charming than Bisping, and I have better ears than Forrest. But they could both probably kick my ass.”

“He said ass, Amelie!” Henry whispered, half shocked.

“Yes he did, Henry. It’s okay. That’s how fighters talk,” Amelie soothed.

“Can I say ass?” Henry whispered again, curiously.

“You can,” I cut in, “after you learn how to fight.”

Quinlan

I walk toward him, the sight of him slightly unkempt with a carefree smile he hasn’t possessed for days calls to my libido on so many levels it’s ridiculous. He brings a shot of something to his mouth and I don’t even give a second thought to what it is because I know I’ll taste it on my lips momentarily.

He hums deep in his throat when I step up into his body and there is something so inherently sexy about the sound—knowing that I caused that reaction—that together with the feel of his firm body against mine lets me know there will be no interruptions this time.

He looks at me, eyes darkening and one hand sliding beneath my shirt a beat before our lips meet in a hungry, no-holds-barred kiss. His empty bottle clatters on the counter behind him so that his other hand can join in the temptation. I lose myself in the taste of the tequila on his tongue, and the hypnotizing feeling of his hands on my body.

The music thumps hard around us, the noise buzzes, and the faint scent of cigarette smoke wafts in from outside but it’s as if none of it hits me because I’m consumed by everything about him: his taste, his cologne, the groan I can’t hear but can feel against our connected chests, the heat of his body. I don’t care who’s watching because it’s almost as if the overwhelming emotions that he’s experienced all week long are manifesting themselves into our mutual desperation.

“Upstairs. Now,” he murmurs against my lips, and I’ve never heard more perfect words. He grasps the bottle of tequila behind him in one hand and my hand in the other without saying anything further and walks with purpose through the crowd. I can’t see his face but he must have a determined look on it because not one person stops him to talk when that’s been the norm for the evening thus far. At the bottom of the stairs, I catch the eyes of the three wannabe women and just smirk. Call me bitchy, but I can’t help it, I’m with the one they were hoping to land tonight.
