If you ask anyone to describe the great state of Kentucky, odds are they’ll most likely answer you with “Bourbon and horses,” but if you ask Rosie May, the only thing she’ll ever respond with is “Derby hats.”

Big hats. Small hats. Elaborate hats. Simple hats. You name it, she loves them all. Every. Single. One. Because of this, she’s always known she would one day own a Derby hat store. At twenty-five, she’s back in her hometown of Louisville, and her dream has finally come true. With the season officially underway, her brand-new shop is gorgeous, the inventory is stocked, and she’s ready to go. Her only problem is William Stokes Whitlock III.

Stokes is tall, insanely handsome, heir to one of the largest thoroughbred farms, and her best friend’s brother. He’s also annoying, incredibly boring, arrogant, and for over half of her life, her sworn enemy. Only now, it seems he needs a favor. As for why, he won’t say.

For two months, she’ll be his girlfriend, and in return he’ll use his society status to help promote her new shop. Seems simple enough, right? Wrong. She thinks his timing couldn’t be worse, but the way he sees it, it’s the best. The best for who—that’s to be determined.

How do they pretend to be in love when all they’ve ever felt is hate? Can she do this? Can they? Especially knowing it’s fake . . . or is it?

Can Rosie set aside what she thinks she knows of the boy from her past to see the man standing in her present? With her heart at stake, she has to decide if she’s willing to go against the odds to place the biggest bet of them all . . . on love.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5 Utterly Incredible Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Kathryn Andrews and her books. There is just something about the way that she creates her characters and stories that gives me everything. The vibrancy and personalities of her characters, the way her words bring it all to life, the way she captures the feels and the swoon and the pure connection of her characters…it’s just the best.

And let me tell y’all, Hats Off to Love is Kathryn Andrews at her best.

It is exceptionally written and crafted, and every word and page just pulls you in more. It is fun, effervescent, and just full of life and color and more personality than you can shake a stick at! It’s charming and swoony and so dang sweet. It’s a story that has so much heart, such true connection, and a lot of heart that will pull you in fiercely to these characters. This book truly has it all, and I can’t stop smiling when I think about all that I got with these characters along the way.

Simply put, this book was absolutely fantastic from start to finish and it is a book that you need in your life this very second.

Hats Off to Love has it all.

Fake dating. Check.
Frenemies to Lovers….check check.
Best friend’s brother….check check check.
Southern charm and so much swoon….all the checks.

This book was utterly amazing. From the very first page I was consumed, I wanted and needed more, and I had to get it all with Rosie and Stokes. Those two definitely kept me on my toes, and boy was I there for every second of it. They definitely knew how to push each other to the edge, and I was there for every bit of them dancing around the world of feeling and connection they had for one another. Those two will give you it all, and I promise you that they will both make it well worth the journey they go on together.

Hats Off to Love brings you into the heart of the Kentucky Derby season and into the world of southern high society, where the gossip is strong and the hats are even bigger.

This book follows Rosie and Stokes, two people who love to hate each other and push every button possible. They’ve known each other since childhood, and have been bothering each other ever since. So when Stokes comes to Rosie with an offer for them to pretend to be together, Rosie doesn’t know what to do with him or the offer. She’s an up and coming boss babe who is ready to take on Derby season, and he’s a local well known wealthy bachelor who always says the one thing ready to annoy her. He’s her best friend’s brother, and despite him annoying the hell out of her at times, she can’t help but feel a certain pull to him. She decides to take him up on his offer of fake dating because she can’t resist the opportunity to get help with her business and despite their well known animosity, she trusts Stokes.

What ensues between them in this book is fake dating, frenemies to lovers, goodness. This book is chalk full of moments that make these two question what is really happening between them and where it’s going. What started off as something fake, something to mutually benefit them both, soon becomes way more than either of them bargained for. Which leads both Stokes and Rosie to decide what’s real, what’s fake, and what could be.

Kathryn Andrews does the most phenomenal job of bringing this book and story to life in the most vibrant and enjoyable way. From page one I was invested in this story and rooting for these characters, and the more I got with them, the more I NEEDED them to give their hearts to one another. I loved how she created such life and vibrancy with Rosie and Stokes that they felt so real to me. These characters became a part of me as I read their story. I got to know them in every way, I fell in love with them hard and fiercely, and I just became so invested in what could be for them.

The way that Kathryn Andrews pours it all into Rosie and Stokes makes this book the absolute best to read and experience. I think I smiled through every page, had my heart melt and swoon the more the story continued, and just loved these characters through it all. That is all a testament to what this author creates in this book, and it really speaks to how Kathryn Andrews creates her books and stories and characters that I felt all that I did while reading it.

This book just felt so good to read and experience. It made my heart happy, it gave me all the feels, and it gave me a love story that I will never forget. It was equal parts fun, feisty, and fantastic from beginning to end. And it also just shows you that even your wildest dreams are possible if you take a chance, if you believe in yourself and those around you, and if you just go for it heart first.

Simply put, I loved everything about Hats Off to Love by Kathryn Andrews.

This book immersed me in a heart touching romance that made me blush, made me swoon, and that made me feel it all, all while giving me one hell of a love story. This book gave me a romance of two people with a searing connection that will pull them both into something more real than they could ever imagine. This story swept me up into its magical grasp, into a world of southern charm, derby hats and fast races, business dealings, and more vibrancy than I could have ever imagined. This book delivered an exceptional story of how something fake, soon became something so very real and something that was so much more than these characters could have ever bargained for…and that more, well it was everything.

Rosie and Stokes will give you it all in this book. Trust me. They will make you work for it at times, but you will love it and you will love them. You will love how they take this lively and connection filled journey together as they embark on a fake relationship that soon becomes something very real. You will love how deep things become between them and how that makes them both question everything they’ve ever felt and known about one another. You will love the banter and the spirit filled moments that are the heart of this book. You will love how honest and real things become between them and how that leads them to something truly unexpected, yet something so utterly beautiful.

You will just love them. You will love every single moment and morsel you get with them along the way, and more than that, you will just love you get to feel and live it all as they see what could be. And I promise you, they won’t disappoint you. Not one little bit.

Kathryn Andrews has done it again in Hats Off to Love. She brings it all to this story and makes it the most enjoyable read from beginning to end. This is a love story that I know I will not soon forget. It was everything I needed and more, and it has firmly cemented itself as one of my top reads of the year, and a sure favorite from this author. This book had it all, the love, the swoon and spice, the connection and pull, some serious charm, and lots and lots of fabulous hats.

What more could you want? Absolutely nothing. Trust me.

Excerpt

I lean over the edge of the balcony and peer down at the garden below. I’d take a moment to enjoy the cool Wilmington wind against my flushed face if I could breathe. For a solid minute my vision swims as I struggle to suck in enough air to keep from passing out. The sound of my pulse rushing in my ears begins to ebb as everything starts to calm and I thank my lucky stars. Soft strains of music slowly drift free and steal the silence I rushed up here to find, as the patio doors beneath me open. I can hear fractured snippets of people regaling fond stories of Mrs. Adkins. I move slowly backward into the shadows and watch as he steps out onto the deck, running his hands through his hair. I should take the opportunity to leave while he’s out here, but I can’t seem to make my legs work.

I watch as he links his hands behind his neck and stares out at the sky. My heart rate begins to accelerate again when I remember idly how I used to love running my hands through his messy blonde locks. He looks exactly the same and yet somehow completely different. The natural, infectious energy that used to surround him has disappeared, but I guess prison will do that to you. The boy I last laid eyes on has long disappeared, but the man that’s taken his place bears all the resemblances to my first love.

I wish I’d known he was going to be here—I could have avoided him. I’m not ready to see him, and as he stands looking out into the night, I can’t pull my eyes away. I’ve practiced every day for ten years what I would do in this situation. I’d ask him why he didn’t come clean. Why he lied. Why he shut me out and ruined what was left of my already broken heart. I was positive I’d be able to deliver it spurred on by anger alone. I was wrong. I assumed I’d be furious, but now that it’s actually happening I’m not.

The floorboard creaks when I jerk as a cold shiver races to the base of my spine. I quickly step behind the curtain, worried he might have heard me jump, but when I peer out he hasn’t moved a muscle. My body temperature suddenly feels as though it’s dipped to ten below zero and I’m trembling, despite the mild night. He’s so still it doesn’t look like he’s breathing. I can’t see his face; I should at least thank the universe for that small mercy. I shiver violently again and fold my arms tightly under my chest, trying to get a hold of myself. The sight of him has knocked out the little air I’d managed to suck in clear from my lungs, and my body’s decided to betray me yet again. I shouldn’t be surprised; it’s nothing new. I’m trembling uncontrollably now, and I try to relax and take some deep breaths like I’m supposed to. I’ve seen people shake violently with anger before, but I know that’s not what this is. This isn’t rage or hatred—it’s an acute realization.

I’ve missed him. I’ve missed the one person in this world I should hate.

Summer of Series: You Haven’t Read That?!

Happy almost summer everyone!!

As I sit here writing this post, it is the day before Memorial Day and there are officially 12 school days sitting between me and summertime. *insert caffeine aided shriek here* Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE teaching my tiny humans, but I am beyond ready for summer, and you know what summer means….

LOTS AND LOTS OF READING!

Summertime for me means trying to catch up on all the books I have to read, and I can’t say enough how ready I am for another summer filled with good times, good people, and of course, lots and lots of good books.

It’s obviously no secret that I am perpetually behind on reading all the books I want to read. I feel as if that is pretty much the story of my life at this point. It’s also no secret that I have a ton of unread books that seem to be piling up quicker than you can say “How many books do you have?” My real life never-ending book basket is proof of that, and that thing keeps expanding every day. (Sorry Mom!)

Now a few years back I did a blog post series that I titled Summer of Series. My goal with that blog post series was to read through some of the many series I own. You see I have a thing for books, and especially series. I LOVE me a good series. (That’s probably why over the years I’ve continued to buy complete series like I need my next breath.) There’s just something about a good series, where you spend multiple books in one world with a set of characters that gets my heart beating just a bit faster in the best kind of way. Like for real y’all. Don’t get me wrong, I love me a good standalone novel too, but a good series is my absolute favorite and is something I live for!

When I did my original Summer of Series I had set out to read around 20 different series, and I’m sure you won’t be surprised to learn that I failed at reading even a quarter of those series during that summer. But that being said, I haven’t given up on my love of series and I haven’t given up on my love for this blog post series, which is why I decided to bring it back for another summer filled to the brim with some amazing series. And I for one couldn’t be more excited to get this all started again!

So welcome to Summer of Series: You Haven’t Read That?!

For this summer I decided to pick some series that have been recommended to me for forever. These are the books and series that when I mention I haven’t read them yet, I get some serious side eye….hahaha, just kidding, but I do have a lot of people that ask me “You haven’t read that yet?” Many fellow readers, bloggers, and even some authors have told me I NEED to get to reading these books stat, so I guess it’s high time I start listening to them.

For this post series, I decided that I would focus in on those highly recommended series to finally see what I have been missing out on all these years. (It also made for a pretty great blog post series title, if I do say so myself.) Some of these series I originally intended to read the last time I did my Summer of Series, and others have been added to my list over the years. Some of these series came out years ago, and others are more recent, but they’re all ones that I’ve been dying to read, and they all have been recommended to me sooooooo many times before.

I know there are hundreds of more books and series I could focus on, and believe me I want to read them all, I just chose to focus on these ones because some of them have been in that big old never ending book basket for years, and they needed to see the light of day. Y’all get my crazy thinking, right? Right.

I’m hoping that this summer and this blog post series will allow me to get to as many of them as I possibly can, while also allowing me to connect with some of y’all about these books and how great I know they’re going to be!

Now for the sake of realism, I realize that I’m yet again being a bit ambitious with how many series I selected to try to read, but I figure there’s nothing wrong with aiming high.

So without further ado, let’s get this Summer of Series off to a good start!

I’ve got some great posts, some giveaways, and some good books planned for the summer, and I hope y’all are as excited as I am! I also hope y’all have some great books you plan to read too because you know I’d LOVE to talk about them!

So here’s to the next 3 months filled with some amazing series that I can’t wait to dive into!

p.s. If you have a series from the picture that you would recommend me starting with, please feel free to comment with your recommendation!

Listed below are the series pictured that will be part of Summer of Series. Click the series title to head to Amazon for that series, and click the author’s name to head to their website.

EVERYTHING CHANGED IN AN INSTANT.
I thought I knew what was important, but one phone call sent my life into a tailspin.
Alone and afraid, I cling to the one man I shouldn’t.
I was warned about him and told to stay away. “He’s dangerous,” they said.
But the man who could hurt me the most, gave me the greatest comfort.
“He’s not who they think,” I told myself.

Enshrine Excerpt:

She fiddles with her cosmopolitan. “I think you should get your eyes checked next time you’re at the doctor, Cal. He’s always watching you. It’s sexy, but it also creeps me the fuck out. He’s so dangerous.”

I laugh, playing it off, but I’ve noticed it too. “Is he looking over here now?” I ask, refusing to turn around to look for myself.

She leans forward, her eyes peering behind me. “He is. He’s not taking his eyes off us either.”

“He probably thinks we’re trouble or something,” I say and hope she drops the topic because I’d rather find out what she was going on about before.

“You can pretend like you don’t think he’s hot, Cal, but I’ve seen you flirt with him more than once.”

I shake my head and chuckle softly. “Smiling and saying hello isn’t necessarily flirting.”

“He has a thing for you.”

“He probably has a thing for every girl in this place.”

“Nope.” She shakes her head vigorously and puckers her lips. “He wants you.”

ACED review

*****5 AMAZING COLTON & RYLEE STARS*****

It doesn’t really get much better than Colton and Rylee. Seriously. Those two are one of my all-time favorite book couples, and when I learned that K. Bromberg was going to be giving us one last full on glimpse into their story, I was thrilled. More than that, I was ready to see what she would have in store for those two. I was beyond curious to see what the events of this book would bring to Colton and Rylee, and though I did have some idea since the events of Aced take place between the two epilogues of Crashed, I was surprised and awed and just in love with everything I got from them in this book.

This book follows the after and the amazing, shocking, intense, and life altering things that can happen after that after. It shows how things can grow, how they can evolve and change, yet at the same time how they can be blissfully the same. It shows how the foundation of who you are as an individual and as a couple can see you through the highest and lowest of times, and how that foundation can become even stronger, even if it takes a few hard hits along the way. Aced is about marriage and healing and things coming your way that you never saw coming. It’s about speed bumps and what you do when you’re thrown off a course you never even thought you’d be on in the first place.

It’s about what happens after, the good and the bad, and how you handle it all. It’s about how the fight and fire that makes you who you are can see you through even the darkest of moments. Aced is about the utterly breathtaking moments life and love can bring you if you allow yourself to have it and if you’re willing to give yourself over to it.

Aced is about Colton and Rylee and the unforgettable love they share. It’s about the boys, it’s about healing, it’s about fight and overcoming the darkness that threatens to consume you. It’s about marriage and life and so much in between. Aced gives you everything that defines and makes The Driven Series so enrapturing and amazing to read, and it builds upon all of that in the best possible way. It gives you more from all of these characters in a way that makes sense and just fits.

I absolutely loved every word of this book and what it gave me of Colton and Rylee. It reaffirmed over and over again why this is one of my favorite series, and why they are such a dynamic and distinctive couple. It showed the most authentic, vulnerable, and real sides to their characters. It gave me them at some of their happiest moments, and some of their lowest, and in between I got every single well crafted bit of them. I was literally in awe of what I got from Colton and Rylee in Aced. I couldn’t get enough, and in the end I just wanted more because I loved every single thing I was getting from them.

There were so many moments in this book that melted me, that shocked me, that had my heart reeling and hurting and practically bursting because of what came Colton and Rylee’s way. There were moments that brought tears to my eyes from both blissful happiness and utter pain. So many moments in this book had me swooning and blushing and smiling like crazy because of what comes Colton and Rylee’s way. So many moments in this book exemplified who their characters really were, and had me mesmerized not only by what they go through, but how they handle it all.

Now you’ve probably caught on by this point that I am not going to tell you what happens in this outstanding book, at least not specifically. I’m not going to do that because you just need to go into this book and experience it for yourself. You need to jump back in heart first, into the thick of it all, and let the events and feelings and utterly breathtaking and intense and all-feeling moments of this book consume you. And I am telling you now…this book will consume you. It will take your heart and your minds and your feelings as you go along with Rylee and Colton as they face the events of this book.

I will say that things are not the easiest for Rylee and Colton in Aced. They face some tough challenges that neither of them saw coming. They both go on another evolution, not only as a couple, but as individuals as well. They have a bit of a fight in front of them in Aced, but what really makes this book so outstanding is seeing all that those two do to make it right, to fight through the pain and jump over the hurdles, and how through it all they are there for one another 100%. Seeing the lengths to which those two would go for one another, for others, and even for themselves in order to heal and get past it all to a good and happy place was everything.

Seeing that fight, that vulnerability, that openness and honesty at times in them exemplified so much about them and showed that they were in it to win it, and by winning it, I mean holding onto each other and their love with everything that they have.

K. Bromberg’s writing is one of my favorite author’s for a reason. She never fails to deliver a thoughtfully crafted story with so much varied and perfectly captured emotion. She creates such distinctive worlds and characters that win you over completely. Her writing put me in this story. I lived its events with Colton and Rylee, and felt every ounce of what it would be like to go through it all with them. She allowed me to be there, to live it, to breathe it, and to get it. She tackled some very real issues that happen in marriage and happen in that after we all so crave, and she did it in a way that did those issues and topics justice. She showed the power of love and conviction and healing, and the beautiful things that can happen when you have all three.

Her writing brought this series to life once again, and she let me jump into both Colton and Rylee’s wonderful and distinctive heads again in the most fantastic way. She let me fall in love with them both all over again, and I loved being with them and feeling so connected to them as they reached some major milestones in their lives. Aced brought them both to places they never thought they’d be, and I can’t say enough how much I loved being there with them through every single second of it.

Like any book by K. Bromberg, Aced gives you the perfect level of romance, passion, emotions and feels, with the best level of pull and suspense that has you epically captivated into what you’re reading. She gives you it all in Aced, and with her writing you get to experience it firsthand. Your heart will be so invested in everything that you’re reading with Colton and Rylee and the amazing supporting characters in their world. Reading this book felt like coming home in a way. Its pages welcomed me with open arms, and I loved every single moment I got between its pages. It was wonderful and intense and consuming to say the least, and in the end I knew I had just read one of my top reads for this year. You will read this book, it will give you so much and make you feel so much, and in the end you will be thrilled you got to experience it all.

Aced was a perfect addition to this series, bringing out the nuances and the many aspects that make Colton, Rylee, their story, and their world so unforgettable. This book pushes both of these characters, and it puts them through the wringer a bit, but it is all beyond worth it because of what it shows them, how it pushes them to fight and change and give it their all, and what it gives you as you experience it all first hand.

Colton and Rylee Donovan have one of the most all-feeling, mesmerizing, and intense love stories I have ever read. Their love is heated and passionate and real and immense, and it will fill your heart completely in this book. The events they face together as a couple in Aced will have you loving and rooting for them even more, and in the end you’ll be in love with everything you got from them in the phenomenal pages of this book. It truly doesn’t get better than this book.

Like I said, Aced follows what happens after. It’s real and it’s messy and it’s not always easy, but it is so very worth it and so very full of love and feeling and everything that makes love worth fighting for with everything you’ve got. The after you get in Aced is best after out there, and it will amaze you to say the least.

So get to reading and loving that after. Let the after in Aced give you everything it has. It would be wrong not to, because afters like the one you get in Aced are not to be missed. Ever.

Full Measures Hallway Scene – Josh POV

The tile floor was cold under my bare feet as I leaned back against the kitchen counter, eating even colder ice cream. Muffled voices came from the entry hall, which probably meant Jagger had another girl over. Not that I cared, but it was a harsh reminder that the only girl I wanted was literally a wall away and wanted nothing to do with me.

Then again, after watching her set that shirt on fire yesterday, I was beginning to think it was less me she was angry at and more the entire world. I got it, really. She’d lost her dad, her mom wasn’t functioning, and she couldn’t get a moment peaceful enough to get her feet under her. She was frustrating as hell, and I couldn’t even blame her for it. Stronger women would have crumbled under what she’d been handed. So I flipped Jagger off when he’d asked me if we needed to call Oprah about my “manpain,” ate ice cream like a heartbroken girl, and tried not to fantasize about licking it off Ember. Looks like I failed that one, too.

“Barbies?” Ember’s voice came through clear as a bell, and I nearly dropped my spoon. Chills ran down my arms, and it wasn’t because of the ice cream currently melting on my tongue. Nope, just my skin reacting to her nearness. I licked off the back of the spoon, abandoned the bowl on the counter, and moved to straighten my shirt, but I wasn’t wearing one. I didn’t give it a second thought before I quietly rounded the corner, leaning back against the wall to get a better look at her.

“Walker! You got company!” Jagger called out, not realizing I was right behind him. Then again, neither did Ember, which gave me a coveted minute to soak her in, adorable bare feet and all. “Just in case he isn’t what you’re looking for… My name’s Jagger.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Jagger.”

“Oh, it’s my pleasure.”

Oh, hell no. I knew that voice on Jagger, the one that sought any good-looking woman in a five-mile radius, and couldn’t stay quiet. “Jagger, back the fuck up off Ember.”

His head dropped a fraction of an inch, just enough to let me know he’d heard me stake the claim. I’d pulled some kindergarten shit and basically licked her like a snack I didn’t want to share — I didn’t give a fuck if it was immature.

“And another one bites the dust,” Jagger said as he passed by me. He shot up his eyebrows in question, and I answered with an almost indistinguishable nod. Yes, this is the girl I’ve been talking about.

He laughed so quietly I almost missed it. Almost. Laugh it up. One day it will be you.

I locked my gaze on Ember and waited to see what she would do. She was like a wounded animal, and every time I reached my hand out, she’d bite, so this time I’d let her move first. It took every ounce of willpower I had not to move toward her.

She walked inside the entry hall, stopping close enough for me to kiss. Damn, she was beautiful. I would have killed for even a hint of what was going on behind those blue eyes. She blinked, but stayed silent.

I reached out before I could stop myself and palmed her cheek. “December?” Damn if she didn’t lean into my touch. It was there, the crackle of energy, the invisible tie that kept me tethered to her no matter how hard or far she pushed me away.

Her breath hitched as she turned into my hand, her lips parting as she skimmed over my skin, inhaling. Want slammed through me, and I forced it back on the bench. I wasn’t sure why she was here, or what she needed, but it wasn’t me pouncing on her.

Or maybe it is. I barely finished the thought before her mouth was on mine, hard and insistent. I was all too willing.

This wasn’t a gentle kiss, or even an apologetic one. It was open, carnal, and I sank into her, desperate to give her what we both craved. A growl ripped from my throat when she sucked my tongue into her mouth. God, she was warm.

I took control, stroking down her curves until her perfect ass filled my hands. With a squeeze, I brought her with me as I flipped to press her against the wall. Then I kissed her like I needed to, stroking her mouth with my tongue the way I’d used my fingers on her body back in Breckenridge—relentlessly and to every advantage.

Her fingers sank into my hair, and she moaned into my mouth, pushing me one step closer to losing what little control I had left. But when she rocked her hips against me, all thoughts of restraint fled. I licked down her neck, savoring her pulse against my tongue and the way she gasped when I gently kissed the patch of skin at the base.

Zip! Holy shit. She unzipped her hoodie, exposing miles of soft skin above her tank top. I picked her up, using the wall as leverage as I set my mouth to the delicate lines of her collarbone. Her taste, her scent, all of her surrounded me, blurring the outside world until there was only Ember.

I met her gaze, her eyes soft and hazed with the same lust streaking through my veins. “Josh,” she whispered, holding my face like I was something precious. I’d been a lot of things to a lot of different girls, but precious wasn’t really one of them, and she was infinitely more precious to me for it.

I set her down but didn’t back away, feeling every curve and hollow against my bare skin, and barely biting back a groan. I wish I’d had a shirt on. Oh, who the fuck was I kidding? Ten shirts couldn’t have protected me from Ember.

I kissed her again, using every ounce of skill I had to make her lose herself in the same way I had. I kept her guessing, never allowing her to settle into the kiss, changing the tempo, the pressure, anything to keep her as off-balance as she had me. She skimmed her fingers down my chest, along the lines of my stomach, and tensed. She dipped her fingers under the band of my flannel pants, and I was ready to rip every piece of clothing off her body so I could get to her skin. Another inch and she’d feel exactly how badly I wanted her.

Damn it. This was way too much, and not anything of what she actually needed. I’d be her whatever, but I had to draw the line when she was doing more harm than good. “December,” I whispered against her mouth, her lips swollen from mine, and pulled back just far enough to rest my forehead against hers. I closed my eyes until I had my body back under control. “I’m fucking desperate to carry you to my bedroom, but I don’t think this is what you want.”

Her eyes flew wide, and her skin stained pink before she hid behind her hands. “What am I doing?”

I got my shit under control, taking two deep breaths before I pulled her hands away. “What are you doing?”

“I came to say I’m sorry for the way I’ve been treating you. Sorry for the mixed signals.” She laughed. “But apparently I jumped you instead, and now I’m sorry for that, too.”

“Sorry for jumping me?” Hell no. I smiled. She could be sorry for pushing me away, for going from hot to cold faster than the kitchen faucet she used to put that fire out yesterday. But I wouldn’t let her apologize for giving me a few minutes to glimpse heaven.

“No. I’m not sorry for jumping you. I’m sorry about my god-awful timing.”

My smile slipped as I ran my thumb across the lips I was becoming obsessed with. “I told you I’m here for whatever you need, Ember. Jumping, apologies, whatever.”

“I’d better get back to studying.”

Boom. She may as well have slammed the door on me, and I retreated a step. “I’d better get in the shower.”

“Didn’t you just…?”

I let my mind wander to the shower, to what I could do to her body, pressed up against mine, water making her slick under my hands – how easy it would be to slide inside her. Stop. “Yeah, but I think I need another one at a different temperature.”

She flushed brighter pink. “Oh. I’m sorry about that, too.”

I couldn’t stop a grin from overtaking me. “I’m not.” I stepped forward until her back hit the wall, then bent down, a breath away from her lips, from what I knew we both wanted but wouldn’t push for. “If you apologize like that, feel free to treat me like shit any time you want. I will be your personal doormat.”

Chapter 1

Mark

“Everyone locked and loaded?” Liam Dempsey draws our attention. There’s a part of me that wants to slap him, but then I remember: I’m the guest. It would probably be frowned upon.

“Ready,” Jackson says and bangs the magazine into the rifle. “What’s the plan?”

“We have the location where Aaron’s being held captive. We’ll split into two teams, surround the building, and get him out. The helo will be on standby for extract. Muffin, Twilight, you guys will handle meeting with the CIA agent.” Liam lets us know how this will go down.

He’s the big cheese of our small team. Commander was fine with allowing Muff and me to go on the rescue. First, we know what the hell we’re doing; I could be the damn commander at this point. Second, if it isn’t Aaron, we have the best chance of knowing quickly. I know it is, though. The code word that the CIA agent communicated was the one we’ve used for years. She relayed his area and the best way possible to enter the compound. Of course, deciphering her instructions was difficult, and it left us to make plans for the plans.

“Let’s get this shit done and get back in one piece this time, okay Muff?” There’s no hiding the sarcasm in my voice.

“Fuck off, Dixon.”

“So touchy.” I grin and double-check my gear. As funny as it is, it’s also not funny at all. Jackson Cole was once the leader of our SEAL team when the mission we were tasked with went really wrong. We lost three teammates that day, and all of us suffered injuries both mental and physical. Then we sent Aaron to deal with a lost shipment of weapons and he was killed. Well, possibly not, but still. Each time one of our asses touches down in this fucking place, someone ends up shot or killed. I’d love to be able to forget, but the truth is, I never will. The guys I’ve lost reside in my heart. The memories take hold in all of us, and for some, they torment us. The wondering if we could’ve done something different, remembering their last moments—it’s a heavy burden to carry.

I’ve lost too many friends and too much blood to this hellhole.

“Okay,” Liam says through our earpieces. “Two minutes out.”

Everyone stands, heads toward the back of the plane, and readies for the ride. We’re parachuting in, and there’s a part of me that’s alive for the first time in a while. I live for this shit. The command of the sky, the adventure, the danger—I love it. It’s a part of who I am, and while I don’t regret leaving the Navy, I miss the fun. Being a SEAL was everything to me. I was damn good at it, too. While Aaron and Jackson had no problem getting out and starting Cole Security Forces, I would’ve been buried in my uniform. However, my arm had other ideas and made the choice for me.

Jackson slaps my shoulder. “Ready to be badass again?”

“I never lost it. Unlike you other pussy whipped assholes.”

“At least I get pussy, unlike some shithead who talks a lot of crap,” he mutters under his breath.

“Keep it up, fat boy. You’re starting to earn your call sign again, Muffin.” I pull my goggles down and watch for the light to turn green. There’s no hesitation as I jump out the hatch. The plane fades away as I plummet to, once again, do what I live for.

We all reach the ground safely a few miles from the IED site where this whole mess started.

Liam gives the hand commands as we split into teams of two. If I ever felt like a piece of shit before, it was nothing compared to now. Aaron is possibly still alive and nearby. We didn’t search before, partly because Muff got shot, but I never even considered coming back. They claimed there were no survivors, and we listened.

If it were me, would I be pissed? Fuck yeah, I would. We should’ve looked.

“See that, up on the building?” Dempsey’s voice cuts through the silence.

My eyes dart to where his hand is pointing. I can’t see it clearly, but hanging from the antenna is a red scarf, the go-ahead signal from our contact.

“Charlie better not be fucking us around,” I grumble. I’ve missed the way my body feels right now. Everything inside me is awakened. My mind knows there’s danger and my muscles are tense so I do my best to relax. I can’t be on edge or someone could get hurt. I remember how it felt to lose our teammates on that mission. I remember carrying Brian, Devon, and Fernando’s bodies out. I remember watching the life fade from their eyes. Then to think of all the other drama we’ve dealt with being in the sandbox—this place gives me anxiety.

“She’s on our side. Head in the game,” Jackson snaps as he creeps forward. He’s in the zone. I need to get there before we kick in the door.

As we approach the entrance, Liam comes through with the green light. “Petunia.” His tone is clear. This time we’re using flowers for code names. I liked it better when we used liquor or tobacco . . . more manly. Shows just how much the Navy is breeding pussies now.

Jackson braces his hand against the door, ready to push through, but someone pulls it open first. All of our guns raise, and my gaze locks on the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen.

The woman’s hands slowly raise, and she casually removes the hijab that covers her mouth and hair. “Check out the garden, boys. Petunia.” Her accent is clearly American. “He’s down the hall and knows you’re coming. There are three on guard by his cell. The others are out doing errands. I’m leaving with you, so don’t fuck this up.”

I stand there, staring, unable to form a fucking coherent thought. This is the CIA op? This five-foot-four, drop-dead gorgeous woman? No wonder she gets information. I’d sell my soul if she asked. Her hair is almost black and hangs straight, her eyes are ice blue, and don’t get me started on what I imagine her plump lips doing. I’ve never seen anyone like her. I’ve never reacted to anyone like this before. I want her—any man would—but I want to own her. Every part of my body, especially one in particular, yearns for her. I want to see if her skin is as soft as it looks, if her hair feels like silk, and her voice—I’m done for.

Jackson lowers his gun and then addresses her. “Which door, Charlie?”

“Second on the left. I need a gun.” She puts her hand out.

The need to protect her calls from deep within. “Maybe you should stay out here.”

“And watch you guys get lost? I don’t think so. Gun. Now.” She doesn’t look my way when she replies. She just waits for Jackson to hand her his pistol.

I don’t like this. She may be trained by the CIA, but that’s not saying she can handle combat. “Are you sure you know how to use it, princess?” I ask.

Her eyes meet mine and narrow. Oh, that got her attention. A storm’s raging in those baby blues. She recovers quickly, though, when Jackson places his nine mil in her delicate palm. “Thanks. I’ll let that slide since you obviously aren’t aware of who I am,” she says without taking her eyes off me. “We don’t have a lot of time. Where’s the rest of your team?”

“We are the team,” I reply. Who is this girl? Maybe the CIA needs ten people, but Jackson, Liam, and I could handle this entire thing on our own—the six-guy team we brought is more than enough.

Jackson smirks. “They’re approaching from a different entrance. Let’s go.”

“I’ll lead,” Charlie says and lifts the hijab over her hair.

“We know what we’re doing.” I speak just so she’ll look at me again.

“Wouldn’t want you to get lost or hurt. Don’t worry, I’ll protect you.” Her voice drips with sarcasm. My cock hardens. It fucking hardens on a goddamn mission. I am so fucked.

She opens the door and I push Muffin out of the way. No way is he going to be behind her. Charlie turns to relay a message, and notices he’s not the one following. Her eyes roll, she holds up two fingers, and then she points to the room. The way her ass sways is hypnotic. I lock down the sexual urges flowing through me and focus. The two men trailing me let off two silent shots and then return to following us. We slink through the dirty hallway and come face to face with another guard.

I don’t have a moment to take the sight. Charlie doesn’t hesitate. No more than a breath passes before she raises the nine and shoots him in the head.

I’m in love. It’s official. I’m going to blow my fucking load right here.

This woman is going to be mine.

She turns her head to face me and lifts her lips. The words that come from her mouth go straight to my groin. “Don’t be afraid to pull the trigger next time, princess.” Charlie’s eyes glimmer, and I know right then that this woman will not be owned, but she sure as shit will own me.

“Just wanted to check and make sure you and Rylee were okay.” Thank fuck he finally speaks, pulling me from the temptation to drown my problems away. I swivel so my back faces the kitchen—and the bottle—while I wait for him to say more, ask the questions I know are on his tongue. Yet I’m met with silence. Rolling my shoulders, I blow out a breath as I try to let in the one person who matters most when all I want to do is shut people out right now.

“I’m worried about her,” I confess as I look out the window. She’s still curled up on the chaise lounge where she’s been since Haddie left. The food next to her untouched. It’s fucking killing me to not go out there and talk to her, but I’m the reason she’s hurting.

I’m not going to let her pull away. Don’t think she will. But she asked for space, and I’m giving it to her. For now.

“It takes a lot to catch me off guard, Dad,” I say finally as my mind runs faster than I can say the thoughts, “and this . . . fuck . . . this just blindsided us.”

“I don’t want an explanation, son. I’ve lived this life too long to know how people twist and manipulate things to hurt others. I’m just calling to let you know we’re behind you. I’m here if you need to talk and to make sure you take care of her.”

“She told me she trusted me to handle this, and now? Now, I don’t even know what the fuck to say to her.”

“How about you start by using her name.”

My knee-jerk reaction is to yell at him for the comment, but it dies on my lips when I click another link with the mouse and comments fill the screen.

I’m sure my dad can hear the sound of my fist hitting the desk through the connection and yet he says nothing. The drywall calls to me. It’s so much more tempting to hit—satisfying—because the destruction is there, visible, and yet helps fucking nothing.

“Her name? Easier said than done, Dad. I brought her into my public world, pushed her, and now this is what she gets for loving me?”

“I bet she gets a whole lot more than that, Colton, or she wouldn’t be with you.” His words hang on the connection as I struggle whether or not to believe him. Is the more worth enough for her to stick with me through all of this?

His words repeat in my head.

I sure as fuck hope he’s right. Everything’s been too perfect as of late. Is this the other shoe dropping to put me back in my place and remind me how cruel fate can be?

“Remember, son, marriage isn’t about how madly in love you are through the good times, but how committed you are to each other in the bad times.”

And as cheesy as my dad’s advice sounds, I hear it. Hold on to it. And hope to fucking God it’s the truth because the shit has most definitely hit the fan.

“She won’t even speak to me.” I chuckle in frustration and force myself to turn off the computer. If I see one more image I have a feeling the drywall will be too tempting to resist. Unclench your fists, Donavan. Shove down the urge to hit something.

“I probably wouldn’t want to speak to you right now either,” he says.

She’s a mixture of most of her female characters: sassy, intelligent, stubborn, reserved, outgoing, driven, emotional, strong, and wears her heart on her sleeve. All of which she displays daily with her husband and three children where they live in Southern California.

On a whim, K. Bromberg decided to try her hand at this writing thing. Since then she has written The Driven Series (Driven, Fueled, Crashed, Raced), the standalone Driven Novels (Slow Burn, Sweet Ache, Hard Beat, Aced (a new Rylee and Colton novel releasing 1/11/16), and a short story titled UnRaveled. She is currently working on new projects and a few surprises for her readers.

She loves to hear from her readers so make sure you check her out on social media.

Synopsis2

One explosive encounter brought them together.
One infatuation led to a love like no other.
One secret tore them apart.

As head of the NYPD Organized Crime Control Bureau in Manhattan, Chief Detective Mason Cole walks in the line of fire every day. Between dodging bullets and braiding his daughter’s hair, Mason is tormented with haunting memories that refuse to relinquish control over him, no matter how hard he tries. After a bust gone wrong, he’s thrown for a loop by a woman who will fill his life with more chaos than ever before.

Lindsey Jenkins is a self-made woman. Bold and independent, she lives unapologetically in a life of deception. That is until her facade is threatened by a force stronger than anything she’s ever felt before—love.

Leaving their hearts unguarded could lead to destruction. Even worse, it could expose them both to a war they never saw coming.

In a city coerced by corruption and treachery, what happens when your greatest passion becomes your biggest weakness?

Excerpt

Lindsey

A light, calloused touch scorches up my side, waking me from sleep. Goose bumps rise from the touch of fingertips and just as I’m about to scramble away, his signature scent hits me with a force of desire and I instantly calm. My shoulders fall and I relax my body back into the hot wall of pure muscle plastered behind me. Feathery kisses trail over my shoulder blade and I quiver at the tingling sensation freezing my body in place. His whiskered jaw prickles my skin, along my shoulder all the way up to my neck. It heightens my senses as lust shoots through my core, and I clutch my pillow, fighting the fire in my belly. I yearn to yank him over me and drive his cock right into me as far as it can go. His hand slides from my waist to my ass and as he squeezes firmly and I can’t help the moan from slipping past my lips. My own sounds of desire echoes through the room much louder than intended, and as soon as it’s left my mouth, Mason spreads his hand over my ass cheek and hip, clutching tightly, and with a quick jerk, he pulls me backwards pressing his jean-clad cock into my ass, rubbing his hardness against me.

“Fuck,” he whispers near my ear, his voice breaking. His head leans on my shoulder and I reach back, gliding my shaky hand up his thick firm thigh, over his ass and bringing it up behind me to his head. Pulling at his hair, I angle my head and bring his up closer to mine. We’re nose to nose, body against body, and breathing so rapidly it’s like we’ve both just run a marathon.

“We shouldn’t do this.” I whisper, staring into his lust-filled eyes. We both know we shouldn’t. I can’t do it, not now. He wants too much, I don’t want enough. It’s too risky, too dangerous. What if one night ruins it all? What if after, my body and my heart want more? If once isn’t enough, denying him again will be so much harder. His job, my job, if our worlds collide, it’ll be one fucked-up mess we’ll never survive.

He shakes his head and rolls swiftly over on top of me, pushing me on my back. “Didn’t plan this when I came in here, Linds. But I sure as fuck don’t want to stop now, not now that I know you want it too.” His lips crash to mine, his tongue searching for an opening. My lips part and his tongue slips inside, caressing my own in one powerful kiss, so gentle and long, so passionate. Pulling him closer, he deepens the connection and his hand trails down, fingering the edge of my panties.

“Stop.” I break the moment, panting heavily. “I can’t give you what you want, Mason.”

His eyes reach into mine and my heart pumps harder. He wants the unattainable.

He scoops the side of my face in his hand, brushing his thumb back and forth. The movement is so intimately sweet that my fingers twitch to cover my own hand with his. He makes resisting him so much harder by simply being him. “You can come up with whatever excuse you want, Lindsey. But that’s all they are, excuses. You’ll run out of them at some stage, and I’ll be here waiting when you do.”

I can’t speak. My lips seal shut. Mason rolls off me, enveloping me in his arms as he moves.

Spooning me in my bed, I ignore everything else. I shut off my mind, shut out the world. Closing my eyes, I sink into nirvana, hoping to avoid this inconceivable feeling tearing me in two. I’m conflicted by the comfort of his arms: I’ve never felt so safe, yet stripped bare, all at the same time.
