You know the old adage “if you love something, set it free?”
It’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
The dumbest thing I’ve ever done.
I loved her. I lost her. Hell, I let her go. And then spent five miserable years without her.
To cope with the loss, I put pen to paper and wrote her a love story, knowing when she was ready she’d hear the words I couldn’t say all those years ago.
Turned out, not only would she hear them, but when Hollywood came calling, I made sure she got the lead role. After all, no one else could portray the character whom she’d inspired.
Now she’s within arms’ reach and finally, she’ll know the truth in my heart.
Because that other cliché, “Actions speak louder than words?”
I’m going to prove it.
My words may have brought Ava Banks back into my life; I have to be enough to make her stay.
The air around us was silent save for the crickets chirping off in the distance. The cool Cincinnati breeze nipped at my skin while I waited for his reaction. When I’d started writing this novel, it had been an ode to my past love. My past life. But then it’d taken on a life of its own and become so much more. Which had made it that much more poignant. That much harder to fathom the one word that’d been haunting me for years.
Goodbye.
At long last, he turned to the final page and sucked in a breath. My stomach twisted in knots because he was about to read the end. And I didn’t know how he’d interpret it. Half scared he’d tell me that I’d lost my mind and no one would ever want to read this story, especially with that ending.
He didn’t make me wait long. As his head slowly rose, I was taken aback at the tears shining in his usually cheerful eyes. This man, who had always been like a second father to me, had been reduced to tears by my words. My words. Words we both knew for whom they were meant. And, instead of calling me a fool or attempting to kill me, he watched me with tearful appreciation, switching between nodding and shaking his head as if trying to process it all.
I didn’t know how to react, so I simply stared at him, waiting for him to say something. Anything.
He closed the manuscript and set it on the table in front of us before taking a long swig from his whiskey glass. I followed suit and enjoyed the smoky burn that did little to soothe my nerves.
“Jesus Christ,” he muttered, his eyes locking in on mine. “Tucker. You did it. You fucking did it,” he whispered, seemingly unashamed of his emotional display.
I nodded, the same emotion welling up inside me when I remembered the ending of my first novel. So many love stories begin with the girl who got away. Mine wasn’t any different. Not only in my novel, but in real life as well. Ava Banks was, and always would be, that girl for me. But, instead of slipping through my fingers, she’d made the conscious decision to leave. And, like most dumbass men, I’d let her. Hell, I’d pushed her away. I’d regretted it ever since.
But, now, I was hoping like hell I could get the second chance Trevor did. Hoping like hell my story would turn out differently than his. But, either way, I was putting myself out there, as terrifying as that was. She finally, finally would hear the words I couldn’t say all those years ago.
Now, I just had to wait to see what she’d do about it.

My Review

*****5 Fiery and All-Feeling Stars*****

A.S. Teague is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors with her downright phenomenal books that pack the best amount of feels, fight, and firework level connection. My love of this author’s unforgettable words was solidified by every thoughtfully crafted word in Unraveled, and the more I read, the more I knew that I was loving every single word, experience, and moment this book was so authentically giving me.

Simply put, this book was the best blend of it all. Experiencing Ryker and Rebecca’s fiery story was consuming to say the least, and I loved every second I spent within Unraveled getting to experience every bit of what those two were sharing.

From the very first page of this story through the very last, A.S. Teague swept me up so fully into the literal fire and spark between Rebecca and Ryker, and I truly could not get enough of everything those two shared as they fought, as they felt, and as they fell for one another.

Unraveled is a story about what happens when two people cross paths, and how that one moment changes everything. This is a story about finding yourself in a place you never wanted to be, and where you go from there. This is a story about discovering what you truly want and need out of life, and how you’re going to go about getting it. And in the end, this is a story about what happens when the fight and fire you have brings you to exactly what was missing from your life.

I loved every single word of this book, and I really can’t say that enough. From the feels, to the level of extraordinary fight and determination of these characters, to all the unforgettable moments I got with them, Unraveled blew me away with everything it had, while simultaneously showing along the way how utterly talented A.S. Teague’s writing is.

What I loved about Unraveled:

  • Rebecca’s got some sass. Rebecca Toler is no lady to mess with, and the literal sass and fire from that girl was enough to have me loving her from the very first moment I met her. What I loved about Rebecca was that she completely owned who she was. She wasn’t afraid to push those buttons that needed to be pushed, and she wasn’t afraid one little bit to do what needed to be done, even if people thought she was a bit crazy for doing it. The dynamite personality of that girl will have you smiling and laughing and just basking in the wonderfulness of that girl and her sass, and I am telling you that you will love her so much. The lengths to which that girl and her sass will go to do what’s right, to figure out exactly what she wants and needs, and to do what needs to be done will have you heart loving every second you get with her. Trust me on that one.
  • Ryker’s determination. Ryker was a character that my heart went to from the very start of this book. That man is a fighter through and through, but the start of this book finds that man unraveling before your eyes as he’s stripped of everything he once knew, but let me tell you now, that man’s determination knows no bounds. Ryker is a man who isn’t afraid to do what’s necessary, and that’s exactly what brings him face to face with Rebecca. It’s that same extraordinary level of determination that shows Ryker he has to get closer to Rebecca, no matter how much she tells him they’re not going to happen. The fight and determination shows the true lengths of Ryker’s tenacity, and the way that man goes the extra mile to do what needs to be done, to be the man for Rebecca, and to get to exactly where he always needed to be is nothing short of spectacular.
  • All that glorious fight. Unraveled has a whole heck of a lot of amazing fight through every single page, and that is something that will have you loving this book so much. You have Ryker’s fight to try to put his life back together after losing it all. You have Rebecca’s fight to keep Ryker away. Then there’s Ryker’s fight to show Rebecca and everyone around him who he really is and what he’s all about, all the while you have Rebecca’s fight to figure out what’s right, what she wants, and what should be. And don’t even get me started on the level of glorious fight that comes when Rebecca sets her mind to what she does in this book…because let me tell you, that fight is everything. The level of authentic, emotional, and endearing fight in this book reveals so much about these characters and their tenacity, and it is what truly sets this book apart. That fight is everything and then some, and you will love every single second of it in Unraveled.
  • Feels, feels, and more feels. Along with that glorious level of fight in Unraveled, you also get some serious feels that will have your heart melting on just about every page. What I loved about Rebecca and Ryker’s story in Unraveled is that while it had that fight and that back and forth, push and pull, it also had the feels to go with it. It had those moments to melt your heart, to steal your breath, and to give you all the butterflies as you were falling right along with those two. A.S. Teague gives you those feels and the fire behind them all. Getting that with Ryker and Rebecca will have you rooting for them with all you have, while simultaneously basking in those feels that feel so damn good.
  • A connection that never quits. The firework level connection between Ryker and Rebecca was something that sparked and jumped off of every page of this book. From the very first moment those two are together the sparks fly, the chemistry flows, and the build ensues. Through every turn of that page, that build and tension between them grows to a palpable level to the point of explosion…and let me tell you, that explosion when it all comes to a head is heated, visceral, intense, and so very Ryker and Rebecca. That connection and spark between them continues to grow through every part of this story, and it’s that connection that will invest you in everything those two share. You will love them, you will feel for them, and you will be hoping and rooting with all you have for them because of what they share in Unraveled, and I am telling you that fire you get with them is exceptional.
  • Family is family. One of my favorite aspects of this book had to be the feeling of family between the characters. While Unraveled is a standalone novel, you get back with all of the characters you fell in love with during the first book in the series, and you also get more characters to love with all that you have. (Here’s looking at you Gram!) The friendships, the connections, and the loyalty between these characters that you feel and get to watch grow will strengthen your love to them, this world, and this series the more you get with them all. I truly loved every second I got with them in Unraveled, and I am beyond ready to see what comes next for them all in the next book in this series!!

Unraveled was a story of how your life can change in an instant, but how that can ultimately put you onto a path you never even knew you’d want to be on. This book is about the journey that comes navigating that path, handling its crazy twists and emotional turns, and figuring out how to handle all that comes along with that path. And sure that path might not be easy, and it may be full of fight and heartache and emotional moments, but that path is well worth all the fight it took to make it through it all. Unraveled is a story that gives you that path, the people you meet and fall for along the way, and it is a story of what could be when you truly give it your all.

A.S. Teague did an extraordinary job of bringing out the fight, the feels, and the fireworks between Rebecca and Ryker through every single page of this book. I felt and lived and breathed every single moment of this book right along with them, and the level of investment and connection created through A.S. Teague’s phenomenal writing seared those two to my heart. Their story in Unraveled is uniquely theirs, full of banter, sass, and some serious spark, and in the end, getting to be there with those two as they figured out exactly what could be was nothing short of wonderful.

Through every turn of that page, I knew more and more that though things might’ve unraveled some for these characters in this story, they unraveled in the perfect way to give me hope, give them hope, and bring things together in a way I will truly never forget.

This book is one that I loved every single word of. It was consuming, intense, real, and all-feeling wrapped up into one amazing package, and it truly doesn’t get better than that.

For the next three hours I’m swamped answering calls—thankfully no more real estate agents—and helping anyone that comes in while trying to finalize the boys’ events for the next month. When that damn bell chimes for the hundredth time today, I plaster a forced smile on my face and glance up. When my eyes finally focus on the man walking through the door, the smile vanishes and my jaw falls open.

What the actual fuck? His head is high as he looks around, studying the room. After giving the gym a quick onceover, his gaze finally lands on where I’m seated behind the desk. Our eyes meet and my heart hammers, the pounding so loud I fear he can hear it from across the room. I tear my gaze away from his and scan his body, surprised at the physical reaction I’m having to him.

With a slight shake of my head, I slap my palms on the paper-covered wood, and shove out of my chair, causing it to shoot out at least ten feet behind me. “You have some nerve walking in here.”

He stops in his tracks and blinks at me before an easy smile crosses his face. “Rebecca Toler. Shoulda known I’d see you here.” He drawls as he continues walking toward me.

My pulse is pounding in my ears and my stomach is practicing its floor routine for the Olympics as I stare at the man in front of me. Taking a minute to appreciate his strong jaw line that’s covered in scruff, I notice that his hair is in desperate need of a trim as it falls across one eye.

Fuck, he’s sexy.

He always had been. Regardless how much it pains me to admit it. Though his looks weren’t why I wanted to full body hurl him from the building. Memories of our last interaction flood my mind, along with the hurt and anger I’d felt.

“How ya been, Reb?” he asks with a familiarity he doesn’t have.

His use of my nickname, a familiarity he doesn’t have––or deserve––causes me to snap childishly, “Who said you could call me that?”

He grins, but doesn’t reply.

Fuck, that grin is hot.

“What are you doing in Atlanta, Ryker?” I ask, attitude still thick in my voice.

He takes his time looking me over and my body betrays me by flushing at the attention. His eyes are appreciative of what they see, but strangely enough, it doesn’t feel like he’s ogling me.

He steps forward and shoves his hands in the pockets of his washed out jeans that hang low on his hips. “Well, I was in town and thought I’d stop in and say hello to my buddy Breccan. Seeing you is an unexpected bonus.” His lips tip up in a smile and my stomach flips again.

“Your buddy?” I hiss through clenched teeth while attempting not to let my gaze linger on his pants any longer. The thought of Ryker and Breccan ever being buddies would have been funny, if I wasn’t too shocked to laugh.

His gaze finally makes it back to mine and he nods once.

For a few moments we simply stare at each other, him smiling while I scowl.

*****5 Unforgettably Emotional Stars*****

See Through Heart by Amie Knight was a beautifully emotional debut novel that truly touched me on every level. This book was so well written, so deeply emotional, and such an all-around phenomenal book that completely swept me up into everything it had. From the very first page of this story I was beyond taken with Ainsely and Adrian’s story of love, life, and loss, and through it all I just feel deeper and harder for everything those two were sharing.

This story is one that will open your heart up wide, flood it with feels that will have you simultaneously melting and aching for these two and all that they share, and one that will literally steal your breath with all that it gives you.

Ainsley and Adrian’s story is real. It’s raw, it’s deeply emotional, and it will blow you away with everything that it has. The meaning and the power behind what you get with these two as you experience their story will have you laughing with them, crying with them, and feeling it all with them as their story unfolds. Amie Knight completely consumes you with the two of them with her phenomenal writing, and that connects you into everything you are reading in the most authentic and real way.

There are so many aspects that I loved about this book. I loved how much it made me felt, even when it hurt my heart for these two. I loved how deeply invested I became in their story as everything unfolded in front of my eyes and heart. I loved how exceptionally written and crafted this story was, and how that writing gave me these characters and their story so truly and deeply. But most of all, I just loved this book, wholeheartedly with everything I had and I truly can’t say that enough.

What I loved about See Through Heart:

  • How in the world is this a debut novel? If I didn’t know it, I would never have guessed that this was a debut novel. Amie Knight’s writing is flawless, and the way that she completely puts you in this story with all of her characters was nothing short of spectacular. Her writing gave me it all while I was reading this book. It gave me these characters, it gave me their heart touching journey as they tried to get back to one another, and it gave me all of the feels with them as they went through it all. Amie Knight’s powerful writing is honest, raw, and will have you feeling beyond in this story because of how exceptionally and meaningfully she crafts every word and emotion, and it honestly doesn’t get better than that. I have no doubt that more amazing things are about to come from this author, and I can’t wait to get my hands on whatever she has in store for us all next.
  • Ainsely and Adrian’s journey. I have to say that one of my favorite aspects of this book was getting to experience Adrian, Ainsley, Lorelei, and the many other phenomenal characters of this book throughout so many parts of their life. I met them as young children, I got to be there as their friendships grew and developed. I got to be there in the moments that things started to change, and I got to feel every ounce of emotion that went with all of that as they grew closer to one another, as they started to fall, and eventually as it all fell apart. Getting to experience all of that with these characters seared them all to my heart. It also invested me in them so deeply and truly, and it connected me to them on the deepest of levels because of everything I experienced with them. I got to see them all at their highest of highs, their lowest of lows and everywhere in between, and that gave my heart to theirs a million times over while reading this book. Experiencing every new event that came their way strengthened the bond I had to their characters, and I honestly can’t say that enough.
  • Second chances for the win! Now it is no secret that second chance romances are my jam. They are my all-time favorite storylines for a reason, and See Through Heart reminded me of that again and again. This story embodied what it means to have a second chance romance. It captured every hope, every fear, every heartache, every tear, and every feeling along the way as Ainsely and Adrian tried to put themselves and their hearts together again. Their story sure as hell wasn’t easy, but it was beyond worth it, and getting to be there every step of the way as they tried to see where a second chance might take them was everything. It was intense, it was full of their specific dynamic that I couldn’t get enough of, and it repeatedly reminded me why what they were sharing was so worth fighting for. The tenacity of these characters, their honesty and how they really went there as they saw what second chances could bring them both was unforgettable, emotional, intense and consuming, and I truly couldn’t get enough of it.
  • The hurt feels so good and is beyond worth it. One of my favorite aspects of this story was how much I felt every single outstanding word of it. Amie Knight’s exceptional writing completely allowed me to feel what all of these characters were, and that put me in this book with them, feeling it all as the events of the story came their way. See Through Heart is a story you feel every word of. It’s a story that hurts you, that breaks you open, and one that will have you fighting tears as you experience what it brings to these characters. This story isn’t easy on any of these characters, but its deep emotion, honesty, and authenticity leaps from its pages in the most incredible way. So yes, this book will hurt you, but it will also give you it all with these characters and their journey together, and let me tell you, getting that with them is beyond worth it.
  • Connections you feel every ounce of. Amie Knight completely brings the relationships between all of the many outstanding characters in this book to life a way that makes them all feel beyond real. She lets you understand them, she lets you love them, and she lets you be there in the moments when their relationships grow and evolve. She lets you feel so much for them, and along the way she lets you understand every nuance of their relationships and connections. She allows you to understand their struggles as well, and that gives you the most honest and real connection to them all. Feeling that level of connection between these characters had me loving them even more, and had me knowing through every turn of that page that this story would be one I wouldn’t soon forget.

See Through Heart is a story about so many things. It is a story of what happens when things come into your life that you were never expecting. It’s a story about meeting that one person who can heal you and break you in the very same breath. It’s a story about love and loss and every single emotion that comes in between. It’s a story of sisters, love, and how one choice can change it all.

The power and the meaning behind all of the words in this story is something you won’t soon forget. With an incredibly honest level of emotion, a romance that will have your heart melting and aching and swooning on every single page, and a connection that just doesn’t quit between all of these characters, See Through Heart has it all. It has the characters you will love with your entire heart, it has relationships you will be invested in through every page, and it has the feels that will literally give you it all.

To say I loved and enjoyed this debut book is putting it too mildly. See Through Heart by Amie Knight is amazing. So beyond amazing, so beyond consuming, and so beyond all-feeling. I could say that a million times over, and it still wouldn’t be enough, and that is just part of what makes this such a phenomenal book.

His gaze finally makes it back to mine and he nods once.

For a few moments we simply stare at each other, him smiling while I scowl.

My Review

***** 5 Sweet and Emotional Small Town Stars *****

There are so many things I know to be true in life, and at the top of that list is the fact that M. Mabie writes one helluva good book. The all-feeling stories and unforgettable characters she has so brilliantly created and captured represent some of my all-time favorites. This author’s talent knows no bounds in my personal opinion, and getting to feel and experience and live the mesmerizing words she creates in each and every one of her books is something I love and look forward to with everything that I have.

Every time I sit down to read a new book from M. Mabie I know that I am about to be blown away by what she has in store for me, and let me tell you, Sunshine and Rain was no different.

I honestly don’t think there are enough words in the world to describe how much I loved this book, how good it felt to read it, or how amazing and wonderful Sunny and Rhett were to fall in love with.

This book was sweet and swoony through every single page. It was refreshing and real and so beyond heart melting too. It was a story and a book and a world that just felt so darn good to be in, and falling in love with Sunny and Rhett and their literal amazingness is something I won’t soon forget.

Sunshine and Rain was the epitome of a feel good romance that sweeps you up into its literal magic with everything that it has, touches your heart, melts it a whole helluva lot too, and has you feeling and experiencing every ounce of that magic all the way through.

From the very first page of this book I was beyond enamored with the authentic, inviting, and charm filled world that M. Mabie so fantastically creates in this book. Sunshine and Rain thrusts you right back into the world of Wynne, population 3402, and it has you loving every second that you get in that place with its cast of characters that make you feel right at home. M. Mabie does such a phenomenal job once again of creating a world that feels so real, so all-consuming, and so right for this story and these characters and it all just fits as easy as pie.

Wynne is a small town bursting with the most distinctive small town vibrancy that will have you wanting to take up residency within its limits in no time flat. The town of Wynne is almost its own character in this book, and in this series, so to be back within its wonderfulness felt darn good and darn right. This town may be small, but it is bursting with so much for you to love, and I am telling you that once you’re in its grasp, you’re never going to want to leave. Being back with the wonderfully distinctive characters I fell in love with in Roots and Wings was the cherry on top to a world that I seriously could not get enough of, and every moment with them in this book felt beyond good and so damn right.

Sunshine and Rain is a story about so many things. It’s a story about second chances at what could be. It’s a story about two people who are finally at that right moment in their life for it all to click. It’s a story about how every single part of your past and your own personal journey might just have been leading you to the exact place you always needed to be. It’s a story of feel good moments, a heck of a lot of build, a town that comes together when it really matters, kisses in the headlights, sparks in the moonlight, and oh so many possibilities for two truly unforgettable characters.

It’s also about how the world’s hottest farmer, gives the world’s best DJ a run for her money, and how along the way those two start to realize that while the past may be the past, and the present might not be as easy as they thought it’s be, the future is all theirs to be had.

Sunny and Rhett’s story in Wynne starts with one heck of a memorable reunion, and follows these two as they try to see where all of the feelings and past and possibilities between them could take them if they actually open themselves up to it. You see Sunny and Rhett have a bit of past with one another. A past that is still kind of stuck with them in a way that will have you smirking at the fact that a small town never forgets anything. Nothing about that past is too angsty or drama filled, but they share enough of a past that it holds them back a bit from embracing what they start to feel for one another when they’re reunited in Wynne years after that past.

The opening of Sunshine and Rain gives you that reunion, let’s you be there in those moments when Sunny and Rhett get their wheels turning about one another, and puts you with them as they start to see what could be. Both Sunny and Rhett are at a bit of a crossroads in their lives, trying to decide what they want, what feels right, and what they ultimately need in their life. Much of this book explores their own personal journeys of discovering what is most important to them, and what they’re going to do to get that and keep that.

As the pages of this book turn and as you fall harder and harder for those two, you will get more of their story, you will experience what it’s like for them to realize exactly what they need and what’s been missing from their lives, and you will feel every ounce of heartfelt connection and spark they share.

Sunny and Rhett’s characters were amazing, and I honestly can’t say that enough. They were real, they were authentic, they were easy to love and relate to. The way that M. Mabie so distinctively creates them both and their dynamic together connects you to them, invests you whole heartedly in every part of them and their story, and will have you rooting for them with all that you have. Their story may be low on drama, but don’t for one second think that that means it won’t hook you and sink you into it all with them. With the level of investment and connection you have to their characters, you are going to NEED every word of their story, you’re going to HAVE to know what happens next, and you’re going to WANT every single bit of what Sunshine and Rain gives you with them.

You’ll love the vibrancy that emanates from Sunny, and the endearing nature that Rhett exudes on every page of this book. You’ll love the back and forth that those two share, and you’ll love how much it makes you blush when they make each other blush. You’ll bask in the fact that those two have a history, yet are bound and determined to change the course of it all, some way or somehow. You’ll love how in it they both become, you’ll love how they’re not afraid to go there when it really matters, and you’ll love getting to be there every step of the way with them as they come to realize what’s really important and what they’re willing to do to get and keep everything they share.

You’ll feel the beginnings of something so right, something so needed, and something so good between those two, and the further they fall and the closer they get, you’ll need even more for things to work out for them.

Did I also mention that those two will make you blush and melt and just fall oh so hopelessly in love with them through every single page of this book?! Well they will both do just that, and then some, and before you know it, you will be fighting and rooting with all you have for Sunny and Rhett and their sunshine after the rain. And don’t worry you’re pretty little head to much because you’ll also continue to blush and melt all the way through right along with those two. Trust me. There is no resisting the pull, the feels, and the blush worthy moments that Sunny and Rhett will give you in Sunshine and Rain.

There is no resisting them at all.

And that is just part of what makes this book so phenomenal and one of my top reads of the year.

Sunshine and Rain is a book that feels beyond good to read. This book is the equivalent to a cool glass of sweet tea after a hot summer day, with its ability to make everything feel better and satisfy you in more ways than one. This book is like taking a deep, wonderful, and amazing breath that fills you up with exactly what you need and what you were missing all along. This book is as wonderful and warm as the sweet summer breeze, and the literal goodness that it exudes from every page will touch every part of your heart, mind, and soul as you experience what it has to offer.

Simply put, this book is good. So damn good. It’s phenomenally written, exceptionally crafted, and it’s bursting at the seams with a love story that is equal parts small town, feel good, give you the butterflies and goosebumps while stealing your breath in the same second, kind of good that wraps you up in it all. It’s wholly consuming nature and endearingly charming and vibrant characters is the sugar on top to the sweetest damn love story this side of the Mississippi.

Sunshine and Rain is a book that’s low on drama and high on love. It’s a book that wraps you up, gives you all the feels, and mesmerizes you with the literal amazingness it has within its pages. This book completely exudes what it means to feel and love and experience a story, and with its vibrancy and charm that literally knows no end, it is a book that you need in your life this very second. This book is Sunny and Rhett, their all-feeling and seriously sweet love story, and so much more too.

Through every single page of this book you will feel and experience and know the shear talent of M. Mabie’s exceptional writing with everything she gives you with Sunny and Rhett, and in the end, you’ll be thrilled you experienced all of the sunshine and rain this book so spectacularly gave you.

EXCERPT

I pull up in my driveway looking over at the house.  What I see pisses me off.
Here she is in a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, hat and glasses pushing a brand new  lawn mower.
I make sure I check my temper before I walk over.  Right before I cross the street the little girl on the front porch stops me mid step.
She looks like just like her mother, just a smaller version.  She is sitting on a plastic little table, that they probably just bought, coloring.
I make my way over to her right when the lawn mower goes off
“I told you I would cut the grass.”  I try to sound casual, but the blood in me is boiling, it must be ninety-five degrees outside, and she’s wearing enough clothes for a trek across the frozen tundra.
She looks up “I also said I got it, and I would be doing it myself.” The little girl from the porch makes it to her mother and hides behind her, yanking on her pant leg.
The fearful look that she gives me is just like her mother’s.  I crouch down, getting eye-to-eye with her and say “Hey there, beautiful. What’s your name?” She doesn’t reply, and instead she lowers her gaze so she is looking at her feet. “I’m Jackson,” I reach out my hand, but drop it when I know she won’t take it.  I gesture behind me, as I say “I live in that house right over there.  I used to know  your great grandma.”  I’m trying to draw her into a conversation with me, but nothing I say engages her.
“It’s ok baby, you can tell him your name.  Nan used to make him cookies, so you know what that means, she must have really  liked him.”  She rubs her daughters shoulder.
“I’m Lilah,” she says in barely a whisper.
“That is the most beautiful name in the whole wide world.  You’re lucky to have such a beautiful name.”  She smiles at me, right as a car
back fires. She yells and puts her hands to her ears.

Two things happen at the same time, her mother grabs her and runs toward the house,  and I vow to protect them.
“Wait,” I rush after them and make it right to the door before it’s closed in my face.  I stand there inside the house and watch them rushing to the corner and hide.
Two  broken girls protecting each other against some monster of the outside world.  I walk up to them “It’s ok, it’s just a car, it was nothing but a car.”
“Lilah, baby it’s ok, it’s ok.  I’m here.  It’s ok baby girl, were safe.” She is trying to comfort the little girl who is sobbing quietly in her mother arms.  “No one is here baby.”
She looks over at me, our eyes meeting for one minute before she lowers them again.
“Look it’s ok, it’s just Jackson.  There is no one here, baby.”  She rocks Lilah back and forth. Her back against the wall while she soothes her baby girl whose sobs are slowly stopping, her eyes closing.
“What can I do?”  I’m now sitting in front of her not sure how to even start to dissect this.
“Nothing, you can’t do anything for us,” she kisses Lilah’s head. “No one can.”
I ignore that last part not sure how to talk about this now.
“I’m going to go outside and finish cutting the grass, then I’m going to go pick up some food for us.  Does she like pizza?”
“Jackson, I don’t know what relationship you had with my grandmother, but I don’t need your help.  We will be fine.  Please, it’s ok, you can leave.” She rests her head on the the wall closing her eyes, the defeat of the day leaving her body.
“I’m going to go outside and finish mowing the lawn so Lilah doesn’t have to go outside anymore today.  Then I’m going to pick up pizza for myself.  You won’t have time to cook, so I’m going to pick one up for you.  I want to eat with you guys, but I’m not pushing myself on you either after today.  Now I don’t want to fight with you or even discuss this, so just nod that you understand?”
She looks into my eyes, but nods yes.
“I can pay you for the pizza?  I have money. I don’t need a hand out,” she says while trying to push herself up to go get fucking money.
If she weren’t so scared of things I would punch the fuck out of something right now.  “I don’t want your money, now or ever.  I have no doubt you can take care of yourself.  Consider this a housewarming present.” I get up going to the door not even giving her a chance to say anything else.
“She’s never had pizza before, so can you just get us plain cheese.”
I don’t say anything afraid of what will come out of my mouth.  I nod and walk out the door, closing it quietly so as not to wake Lilah.
I close my eyes exhaling the breath that I didn’t even realize I was holding.
“She’s barely holding on while fighting for her life.  She has demons, they both do.  Whatever happened to them, it’s in there deep.  The
both of them are so scared, you can practically see the fear coming off of them.”
I look over at Brenda who is on her porch watering her plants. “Tread lightly, Jackson, or better yet walk away if you aren’t going to do anything about it.”
I don’t have a chance to respond she walks into her house closing her front door softly, leaving me fighting my own demons.

My Review

*****Five Completely  Unforgettable Stars*****

There is something to be said about a book that completely takes you within its grasp in every way possible way from the very first word until the very last. Those are the kinds of books you feel every ounce of. Those are the kinds of books that you LOVE whole heartedly with every breath in your body. Those are the kinds of books that give you experiences and characters and moments you’ve never met before, yet know from the very first time you live and experience their world with them, that you NEED more of them all in your life.

Books like that give me life. Books like that are why I am a reader. Books like that are unforgettable in every way, shape and form.

Wilder by Rebecca Yarros is a book like that. It’s a book like that and more.

When I tell you that this book is everything, I mean it. It’s everything. And then some. It’s swoony, it’s emotional, it’s full of feels and spark and adrenaline that will have you feeling and breathing and just in awe of it all. It’ll take your breath away, give you life with every turn of that page, while simultaneously having you fall in fierce, all out love with two extraordinary characters.

This story will make you, it will bring you to places you never thought you’d get to go, and along the way it’ll give you one helluva story that will turn your world, and your heart, upside down in the best possible way.

Now if there’s one thing I know in life, it’s that Rebecca Yarros knows how to write a darn good book. I have read everything she’s written, and let me tell you, this author knows how to write. She knows how to thrust you into it all in the most all-consuming way to the point that you will literally not be able to put the book down. She knows how to connect you in every way possible to the authentic and completely realistic world she creates, and more than that she allows you to understand what it’s like to live the lives her characters do. She also knows how to create some wonderfully distinctive characters that will steal your heart from the very first time you meet them.

Bottom line: Rebecca Yarros puts you in her books, heart first, and lets you get, feel, and understand it all through every turn of the page, and that is just part of what makes reading a book with her so exceptional.

Wilder is the start of a new series from this author, and I have to say that the premise of this book had me intrigued from the very start. The thought of getting to experience characters travelling the world, while also getting to see them complete the most extreme and adventurous stunts had me knowing that this was a book I didn’t want to miss. Throw in the fact that this story involves two seemingly opposite characters falling hard and fast for one another, and I was beyond sold on what this book had to offer.

From the very first page of Wilder, I was hooked, lined, and sinkered into everything Rebecca Yarros so exceptionally crafted with these two. From those first moments of getting to know Leah and seeing her firecracker self burst off of the page, to getting to experience the literal spark that is Paxton Wilder, to getting to be there as these two got to know one another and then being there as it all started to change between them…I was beyond smitten with everything I was getting in this story.

Through every new chapter in this book, Paxton and Leah become closer and closer, and I just continued to fall harder and deeper for the two of them, and the possibilities of what could be. There truly is something undeniable about the two of them. There is a tangible spark between those two that fires off the page like the most brilliant and mesmerizing fireworks show you’ve ever see and experienced in your life. You FEEL that spark in your bones while reading Wilder because that’s how real and authentic and visceral it feels.

Rebecca Yarros allows you to be in every single second of this book with Paxton and Leah as they realize more and more what’s happening between them, and getting the emotional, raw, and intense connection you do with them will bring that all to life in the most spectacular way.

When I tell you that their story took my breath away, I am not exaggerating. Not one little bit. Their story, their backgrounds, their own personal struggles and fears and heartbreak, coupled with what they were trying to create together literally stole my breath on more than one occasion. All of that also made my heart feel like it was racing out of my chest at times, or melting into a puddle of emotion the deeper and riskier things got for these two, and through it all they just kept stealing my breath.

Their level of real connection and all-feeling spark that lit me on fire, stole my breath.

Their level of honesty, vulnerability with themselves and with one another, and the depth of what they were willing to share, even though it scared them out of their minds, stole my breath.

Their level of emotion that literally hurt my heart at times, while simultaneously deepening my love for them and what could be, stole my breath.

Everything with Pax and Leah as they tried to wade through what they were really feeling, what could be between them, and what they could handle when they met the one person who could turn their entire world upside down, stole my breath.

And I’ve never been happier to not breathe in my entire life.

Pax and Leah are two characters that are permanently seared to my heart for the rest of time, and it is all because of what Rebecca Yarros so spectacularly gave me with them. She made them two of the most real, easy to love, honest and endearing characters I have ever read, and the more I got with them, the more I just willingly gave my heart to them both. Whether it was learning each of their backstories that explained so much about their presents, or whether it was what started to happen between these two as they got closer to one another, or whether it was seeing the effect they both had on each other, I was beyond enamored with them both.

Rebecca Yarros has a phenomenal talent with making her characters so easy to understand, love, and root for through everything that she gives with them, and Pax and Leah were no exception.

Getting to know the real Paxton, getting to see him and not just the Wilder persona he put out to the world, and getting to understand what was really driving him through it all, sent my heart right to that man a million times over in this book. It also didn’t hurt that he is one of the most charming and vibrant characters I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Paxton never failed to bring a smile to my face or make my heart beat just a bit faster, and getting to know the real him, getting to see him fall for someone and what that was actually like for him, and getting to be there as he put it all out on the line when it really mattered was nothing short of everything. It was sweet, it was heart meltingly good, and it was so him in the most distinctive way that will have you loving this renegade man in no time flat.

Now Leah’s character is one that my heart went to right from the start. That girl was so beyond easy to love and connect to, and the more I got of her, and the more I realized that there was so much that she had been through, the more that my heart connected with her. That girl is a fighter, through and through, and the tenacity and strength she has knows no bounds. She is the definition of a firecracker, and getting to be there as she discovered that spark within her once again, and as she realized what could be if she just kept fighting and took that leap of faith, was one of the most exhilarating, emotional, and unforgettable experiences I’ve had when reading a book. Simply put, Leah is a gem of a character, and her goodness will warm your heart and remind you of the literal amazingness that emanates from her.

Paxton and Leah’s story in Wilder is so many things. It’s full of exciting moments that will have you feeling like you’re right there with them, right in the thick of it, experiencing all of the magic and spark and adrenaline in the same breath they are. It’s emotional and raw and so full of intense feels at times that you will practically be bursting with so much for them, while these two try to see what could be. It’s also full of adventure and meaning and so much glorious fight. It exemplifies what it means to fight for yourself, to fight for what you want and crave and so desperately need, and what it really means fight with your entire being, to put it all on the line for the world to see, and what it means to pour your soul into a fight that will change everything.

Wilder was phenomenally written, exhilarating to read, and hands down one of the best books I have ever read. I also don’t think I’ve had as much fun reading a book in quite a bit of time, and the adventure and feelings and spark that Pax and Leah find themselves in in this book will have you rooting for those two with all that you have in no time flat. Trust me on that! I’m already itching for more from all of these characters, and I am beyond excited to see what Rebecca Yarros has in store for us as this series continues.

Whatever may come as this dynamic world continues, I have no doubt that it will be oh so real, oh so intense, and oh so unforgettable.

Wilder by Rebecca Yarros is the true definition of a good book. This book showed me again and again why I love this author, her words, and everything she so brilliantly crafts. This story and its characters reminded me again and again why I LOVE a good love story, and they exemplified what it means to read a love story that touches your very soul. The emotions and feelings and moments I got to live within this book reminded me again and again why this will be a top read of the year for me, and why I will never forget what it was like to read this book.

I said it before, and I’ll say it again…Wilder is everything. And then some. That is just a fraction of what makes it such an exceptional read that will light your heart on fire, melt and squeeze it again and again, while having you fall oh so hopelessly for what Paxton and Leah share. And it truly doesn’t get better than that.
