BLACK Copyright 2016 by Aria Cole

“You’re only twenty-one?” I ran a palm through my hair, thinking how I’d already had my dick between her legs, tasted her on my tongue. Jesus, she’s just out of high school. “How can you be so calm? Jesus, I nearly fucked you on my desk. Why didn’t you tell me you were only twenty-one?”

“It won’t make it any less true the more times you say it.” Her eyes flashed. “And we’re not that far apart.” She shrugged, then popped a bite into her mouth.

“Not that far? Ten years seems pretty far to me,” I bit, never feeling so goddamn old as I did sitting next to her in all her pretty, youthful glory. Jesus, she was beautiful. Why was she even here with me? The angry bastard with the nasty scar? I didn’t deserve her.

“Hey, chill out.” She plucked a bite from the plate and held it out for me. I snagged it between my teeth and chewed, never breaking eye contact. Her eyes glistened with amusement as she watched me, her full lips tipped in a Cheshire grin.

“Fine. But maybe don’t tell anyone your age for now,” I ground through my teeth before tightening my palm at her thigh again.

A soft chuckle fell from her lips. “Who would I tell? You’re my only friend.” Her palm covered mine as she threaded her fingers through mine. “What’s with the hands on me all the time thing, anyway?” Elle uttered just as she took another sip of her beer bottle. A girl who drank beer, the walking embodiment of a man’s dream come true. She was so cool, calm, and collected, I could certainly take a play or two from her book.

“Let’s them know you’re mine,” I ground, still uncomfortable with the fact that she was so much younger than me.

“Yours?” She almost spit out her beer with her chuckle. “That’s a little soon, don’t you think?”

“Not when you know,” I answered simply. The silence fell and I knew her mind was probably on fire with thoughts again. “Listen, I don’t want anyone else thinking they have a chance with you. This shows them not to fuck with my property.” I squeezed at her thigh, thinking I’d explained myself sufficiently enough.

“Your property?” Elle hummed as she pushed her half-eaten plate of food away before downing the rest of her bottle. “Your property?”

Oh shit.

“Elle!” I hollered, my thick thighs pushing the table across noisy tile when I stood hastily. “Elle!” I took long strides out the door, feeling at my neck the burn of judgment from everyone in that small place. Fuck this. This was why I didn’t go out in public.

“Goddamn it, slow down!” I boomed down the sidewalk where I saw her clutching her purse and leveling me with a glare. Jesus Christ, this woman was going to be the death of me. “Don’t run from me like that again, hear me?” I cupped her elbow and pressed her body against the cool brick of the building. “You are mine.” I ran my nose up the curve of her neck and nipped at her soft earlobe. “Even if you don’t know it yet, I can feel it,” I grit and thrust my hands into her mass of wild waves, pulling her head to mine and fucking her with my tongue. She returned the gesture, but with more ferocity than she’d ever shown before. I yanked at both of her thighs and pulled her limbs around my waist, angling her against the wall, my cock nestled right between her legs, right where he liked being.

“I’m not yours,” she uttered in protest as she nibbled at my bottom lip.

“The fuck you aren’t.” I gripped at one thigh, my other hand trailing between us to find the slick skin under her skirt and beneath her panties. “And this.” I pulled my thumb through the silky hot flame of her pussy and brought it up to my mouth, letting her arousal glisten across my full lips. “Proves you’re a liar.” I sucked her sweet honeysuckle musk off my thumb, then pulled her lips to mine again, crushing her with bruising force as I tasted her, desperate for more. Always desperate for more when it came to sweet Elle.

My Review

*****5 Amazing Stars*****

From the moment I saw the amazing cover of Hetch, I knew I had to read it. From the second I read its alluring blurb, I knew I had to devour it as soon as humanly possible. As soon as I knew this book was written by River Savage, I had no doubt that it would give me an all-feeling, intensely heated and emotionally gripping story that I wouldn’t soon forget. And you know what, I was definitely right with those thoughts.

Hetch was an all-consuming read that packed the perfect level of mesmerizing heat and connection, heartfelt and thoughtfully crafted emotion, and two characters that seared themselves to my heart from the very first moment I met them.

Now it’s no secret that I am a huge fan of River Savage. I have read and loved all of her books, and they have all given me some phenomenal reading experiences, along with some pretty unforgettable characters. When I sit down to read a book of hers I know it will pack one helluva story that will have me on the edge of my seat feeling and experiencing it all through every page. I also know that her writing will completely encapsulate me within her story, her world, and with her characters in a way that feels so real, so raw and authentic, and just so wonderful. Hetch was no different, and I was blown away by what I got within the pages of this book.

Hetch and Liberty’s story in this book was mesmerizing and emotionally intense to say the least. I felt every single word of it as they tried to figure out what in the world they were doing with one another. Experiencing what it was like for those two to find each other, feel for one another, and fall oh so wonderfully hard for one another was everything, and I loved every moment I got with them in this book.

What I absolutely loved about Hetch:

  • A whole new world and series to love. Hetch is the first book in River Savage’s Men of S.W.A.T. series, and I have to tell you that I am already loving this series something fierce. This series opens up the world of this brotherhood that bursts with loyalty, grit, and a sense of connection that is unyielding in the best way. I loved getting to know all of the new characters of this series, and getting to experience their memorable personalities throughout this book. River Savage has a true talent with giving you supporting characters that are so wonderfully distinctive, and this book is no different. I got to know and fall in love with the many members of Hetch’s SWAT Unit, as well as the girlfriends that Liberty has. I can’t wait to get to know each and every one of them more as this series continues. Something tells me they all have some serious stories to tell, and I’ve already got grabby hands just thinking about what’s to come.
  • An evolution that makes sense. I have to say that one of my favorite aspects of Hetch was the evolution of Liberty and Hetch’s relationship. It never felt rushed or force, it just felt right. Those two share one intense and incredible connection that will have you mesmerized in no time, and everything you experience with them in this book heightens that and every feeling they start to share. After meeting in a quite memorable way, these two can’t seem to stay away from one another, and despite them both having their trepidations, they soon start to feel something way more than either of them bargained for. What initially started out as fun, soon turns into something very real and raw and heartfelt. That scares Liberty and Hetch a bit, or a lot, but at the same time it shows them what they just might be able to have together, if they only give it all a chance and let themselves embrace the feelings they have.
  • Hetch’s emotional journey. Hetch definitely goes through a seriously emotional journey, and River Savage let me experience every ounce of that with him. She let me understand him, she put me in some very tough moments with him, and she let me feel that emotional struggle he was having as he tried to overcome the emotional trauma of his past and its ramifications. She just really allowed me to get him on every level possible, and that made everything he was going through in this book that more real, that more intense, and that more connected to what I was feeling for him. Hetch is definitely a force to be reckoned with, and he has this way about him that will simultaneously make you blush and melt and fall like crazy for him, but at the same time you will feel for him immensely. So many of the events in this book push his character, both mentally and emotionally, and they make him realize and experience some not so easy things. Being with him through all of that placed that man in my heart, and I just loved him so much. I felt for him, I cared, and I just wanted him to make it through, and all of that connection was possible because of how phenomenally River Savage created his character.
  • Liberty’s got that fire. River Savage knows how to write a female character with some sass and fire, and Liberty was no different. I absolutely loved her character, and I loved that she was not afraid to do what she thought she needed to or what was right. She also wasn’t afraid to push Hetch’s buttons or to call him on his shit, and I had some major respect for her with that. What I loved about Liberty was that she was just such an easy character to love and relate to. She was kind, thoughtful, and she had a spunk that never failed to bring a smile to my face. At the same time, she was so genuine and real, and she was so invested in the work she was doing for her boys. Seeing and experiencing the true goodness of her just had my heart going to her in no time, and had me hoping with all I had that her and Hetch would be able to find a way to make it all through. Liberty is no wilting flower, and the fire, strength, and determination she had emanated from the pages of this book in the most memorable way with her.
  • A love worth feeling and fighting for. Liberty and Hetch share a connection that just doesn’t quit. From the first moment they meet, it fires off like crazy and continues to build in the most tension filled and heated way. The more those two were together, the more I wanted them to climb each other like trees, and the more I wanted them to explore the more they could share together. While Liberty and Hetch share a heated physical connection, I loved how deeply they felt towards one another. Their emotional connection was just as intense and just as visceral, and even though that connection scared them both so much because they didn’t know what to do with it, at the same time that connection gave them it all. Their connection was palpable, heartfelt, and all-feeling, and every moment with them in this book gives you that connection in the most incredible way. Throughout this story they struggle to figure out where that connection will take them, and while it isn’t always easy for the two of them, and while they have to work on the bumps in the road they face, you will have no doubt that their fight is highly worth it in every way possible.
  • The best twists and turns. Like any book by River Savage, Hetch had some glorious twists and turns that had me one the edge of my seat the entire time. I love how she adds in the action and drama in a way that makes sense for the stories and the characters, and in a way that has my emotions going through the ringer just a bit. Every turn of the page in this book brought a new twist or turn, either in Liberty and Hetch’s relationship, or in the outside forces surrounding them. The more I read this book, the more I brought myself closer to that edge with all that happens, and the more my heart became invested in what I was reading with all of these characters. I never knew what they would all face next, but I had no doubt I would feel and experience every ounce of it, and that made this book so phenomenal to read.

Hetch is an emotionally charged story of what happens when you meet that one person who puts you back together in ways you never knew possible. It’s about how the right person can give you things you never even knew you needed, and how they can give you it all, if you only open yourself and your heart up to them. This book is about feeling and living and loving with all that you have, and about letting go of that past that threatens to consume you, so that you can embrace that future that just might give you it all.

I loved every bit of Hetch and Liberty’s story in this book. I loved what it made me feel, how it made me fall, and how it gave me their enrapturing story that was so full of meaningful emotion, and an intense and heart squeezing connection that just couldn’t be beat. Those two have a connection and a dynamic that bursts from the page, and I just couldn’t get enough of it. What they share and what they go through in this book together will have you feeling and caring for them both so much, and in the end you will just love them both to pieces. I know I did.

I thought this was an outstanding first book in this new and enthralling series, and I can’t wait to get more time with these characters soon. I have a feeling this series will be one of my new favorites, and I have no doubt that River Savage will continue to blow me away with all she’s got as she brings The Men of S.W.A.T. to the my eagerly awaiting hands.

Hetch was phenomenal in every way. I am telling you that you want this intense, enrapturing, and all-feeling book in your life as soon as possible, and I have no doubt that you will love Liberty and Hetch with all you’ve got!

Excerpt

They say moments of clarity hit you hard. Like suddenly a deep understanding smacks you in the face. Your vision becomes unclouded, and a truth that’s been out of your reach rushes at you. It’s in that second your perception of reality becomes so clear you can’t begin to describe it.

Some call it beautiful, some say it can be saddening, some even compare it to the moment your drug of choice washes over you, offering a moment of escape.

I wish I could I say my moment of clarity is an epiphany or some kind of life-defining moment that showed me where my messed-up life is going.

No, my moment hits me as the first wave of the orgasm I’ve been chasing the last few minutes washes over me.

“Fuck, woman, wait for me this time.” His voice pulls me from my haze first, reminding me how messed up I am.

Heat covers my body, not from the life-altering orgasm, but from embarrassment.

Without thinking rationally, I throw my vibrator to the floor and freeze, afraid to move, as a low moan pauses on my lips. The thump of my beating heart, almost syncing in perfect rhythm to the throb drumming between my legs.

Jesus, please tell me he didn’t hear me.

“Don’t go shy on me now, babe.” He half chuckles, half growls, and even though there is a wall between us, the words wash over me; Goose bumps prickle my skin as if his warm breath whispered over me.

Shit.

Shit.

Shit.

Slowly, as if by some freak of nature, apartment nine can see me through the wall, I roll off the bed and find myself on all fours.

Really, Liberty?

Fully committed to my actions, I slowly army crawl my way to the nearest exit.

A strong tap on the wall halts my escape followed by, “You still there?” Another wave of humiliation crashes over me when I take stock of my predicament.

If I don’t get out of here fast, I’ll be drowning in so much embarrassment, nothing will resuscitate me.

Unable to form a coherent thought, and not willing to engage with the pervert, I continue to low crawl my way out of my bedroom and into my bathroom. Closing the door, I stand, and quickly walk to the shower. After turning the faucet on, I strip the rest of my clothes off, then step under the spray of the water.

Jesus, that was close.

I have no idea what I was thinking. In fact, I know I wasn’t. Which scares me even more.

I, Liberty Jenson, would never take risks like this. If asked what prompted this change in me, I’d answer with two things.

Apartment nine.

And a self-appointed sex sabbatical.

It all started when I moved into my new apartment. At first, I was excited, ready for a fresh start. After a messy break-up, which included dealing with a douche ex who didn’t know how to keep his dick in his pants, I needed a new place. Somewhere closer to town this time, secure, and most importantly, affordable. However, finding a place close to the city, which was secure enough to make me feel safe and would still leave me enough money left over from my program director’s wage, proved to be a feat. After searching for five weeks, I was about to give up, accept defeat and move in with my mom and dad again. I mean it wasn’t the worst thing that could happen to a single thirty-year-old woman.

Right?

Luckily for me, I didn’t have to resort to such desperate measures when this place came up two weeks ago. After a quick walk through, I fell in love with the two bedrooms, one bath, and open kitchen living area. I filled out the paperwork, paid my deposit, a month’s rent in advance, and moved in five days later.

Everything seemed perfect.

That was until I realized how paper-thin the walls were between apartments.

It started out subtle, a sneeze in the early evening on my first night here as I settled into bed. A soft murmur of a man’s voice the third night.

But then came the sex.

The hot, wild, filthy sex.

The fourth night in my new apartment, I was woken to the low moans of what I assumed to be a needy woman.

My face heats up remembering the screams, the grunts. The deep baritone of apartment nine’s voice as he told the ‘bitch’ to keep it quiet.

Unsure what to do, I laid silent, listening to my new neighbor fuck some lucky woman into submission.

I’m not going to lie; I wasn’t turned on by it. I was set alight.

I never thought I would be that kind of person, the kind who got off from listening in on someone get off, but something in the way he spoke to her, something in the way he spoke to all the other women since, stirred a new want in me. Soon I found myself seeking out my room for a chance to hear him.

It was wrong.

So wrong.

But it didn’t stop me from wanting it.

The screams.

The deep grunts of pleasure.

I wanted it all.

I wanted it to be me.

“I’m officially going to hell.” I groan under the water, trying to wash the stupidity off me. Stupid would be the nice way of calling me a fucking idiot. And an idiot is what I am. Especially after tonight.

Suzy glared at me. “What’s this we shit? I’m the one with two aliens inside of me, trying to claw their way out of my body. I’m the only one pushing them out of my tiny vagina. Not you. Not her. Me!” She waved her hands frantically in the air. “I’m the one doing everything while you sit there calm, sexy, and without your body splitting in two. I’m going to be the one tearing wide open as I push two humans and their giant Gallo heads out of my body.” She collapsed, gasping for air, and closed her eyes.

I bit my lip. Pregnant Suzy was unpredictable, but in-labor Suzy was just downright scary. “I know, sugar. You’re doing all the hard work. I’m just here to cheer you on and support you.”

Her nostrils flared and her eyes grew wide when she glanced up. “Support me? If you want to support me, you’ll never knock me up again. You want to cheer me on?” She rolled her eyes and made a noise low in her throat. “Stop fucking talking.”

I braced myself, waiting for her head to do a 360. I brought my mouth right next to her ear. “My sweet little wife, you beg for my cock every day. It takes two to tango, sweetheart. I didn’t put you in that bed.” I lowered my voice further, whispering, “Your sweet little cunt did.”

Excerpt Reveal: The Spiral Down by Aly Martinez

the spiral down excerpt reveal

the spiral down coming soon

Chapter One

Henry

Rain fell from the sky in sheets. It’d only been drizzling when I’d boarded my private jet not even a half hour earlier.  Now, I could barely see the airport outside my window.

“No, babe, it’s not a big deal. I just would have liked to see you while I was in town. It’s been a while. That’s all,” I said, shifting the phone to my other hand.

Dipping my finger into the empty glass that had once been the home of gin and tonic number three, I stared at the melting ice as I stirred it in a circle.

Her raspy, sleep-filled voice no longer sounded anything like that of the little girl I’d met when she was only five. But, after sixteen years, Robin Clark no longer resembled that child, either.

“I swear I thought the shower was next weekend. I got my dates mixed up. I’m so sorry,” she lied. She did that a lot.

“Don’t worry about it. It’s cool,” I said, pretending to believe her.  I did that a lot.

And it killed us both a little more every time I did.

“I love you, Cookie,” she whispered.

I wasn’t sure if that was a lie or not anymore.

But I knew one thing was true. “I love you too, kid.”

We sat in silence for several seconds, neither of us willing to hang up. However, neither of us knew what else to say.  A million words hung between us, but none of them would solve anything. God knows I’d said them all over the last five years. Still, she’d never heard any of them. Not really.

With my heart physically aching, I swallowed hard and bit the bullet. “Listen, I’m about to take off. I’ll be in L.A. for a show next week. Why don’t you come and we’ll hang out for a few days?” It was an honest invitation.

I didn’t receive an honest response.

“I’ll be there!”

“I’ll have Carter set it up. I’ll come by tomorrow afternoon and give you the details. I can’t stay long, but maybe a quick dinner or something.”

“Perfect.”

We didn’t linger with drawn-out goodbyes. A few seconds later, my phone was off and I was once again gazing out at the pouring rain, wishing I were anywhere but on a plane.

Carter, my head of security, settled in the seat beside me and opened the latest issue of Sports Illustrated magazine.

My stomach clenched when the plane jerked as we backed away from the gate.

“Tell Levee I love her, okay?” I said to Carter without dragging my eyes off the terminal disappearing in the distance.

“Here we go,” he mumbled, closing his magazine and turning his attention my way.

“Can you do me a huge favor? If I don’t survive, make sure it’s open casket and I’m wearing—”

“Blue. It makes your eyes pop,” he finished for me.

“Right, but—”

“But your eyes will be closed, so you should wear green instead. It looks better with your complexion.”

“Yes, but—”

“But your complexion will be ashy since you’re dead and all. So let’s just go with a sleek, black suit. It’s timeless.” He arched an incredulous eyebrow.

Lifting my glass in the air, I rattled the ice at Susan, my personal flight attendant. She was busy buckling herself in for takeoff, but she flashed me a warm, motherly smile in acknowledgement that she had seen me.

“So maybe we’ve had this conversation before,” I told Carter.

He rolled his eyes. “Every time we fly.”

I huffed but didn’t bother explaining. He knew exactly how terrified of flying I was. He’d been there the day it’d all begun.

You would have thought that, after having traveled the globe for years, a simple two-hour flight wouldn’t have been a problem. My racing heart and sweating palms argued otherwise.

In the eight years since my career had taken off, I’d gone from a somewhat-popular YouTube personality to the king of the music industry when Levee and I’d released our self-produced debut album, Dichotomy. Filled with half of her tracks and half of mine, it had soared to the top of the charts. There hadn’t been a radio station in the country not playing our music. In a matter of weeks, our careers had exploded, which had forced the whole world to take notice.

The following years had been a whirlwind. Grammys, record deals, fame, fortune, security. I could have retired six months after I’d started and never wanted for anything again. Well, that’s not totally true. The one thing I really wanted could never be bought.

I wasn’t even sure it could be earned.

It was something so rare that I feared it didn’t actually exist.

Love. Unconditional. Unwavering. Eternal. Love.

I gave that to exactly two people in my life.

I only received it in return from one.

I’d been born a gay man. There had never been a moment in my life when I’d been remotely sexually attracted to women. If I had been, I would have married Levee Williams the second I’d laid eyes on her. Because I’d known, just that fast, that she was going to be the best thing that ever happened to me.

And she had been.

Riding the state’s dime to college, I’d branched out on my own at eighteen, armed with nothing more than a guitar and a headful of mediocre lyrics.

In a lot of ways, alone felt better.

In most, it felt worse.

Luckily, within weeks of starting my new adventure, I met Levee at a local bar on amateur night.  She wouldn’t admit it, but she’d been attempting to hit on me when she’d first strutted over after her set. I understood how she’d misinterpreted my intense stare while she’d performed. But, when her kind, brown eyes lit as our gazes met, I knew, straight or gay, I needed to meet that woman. That night, over beers and more laughs than I had ever experienced, we bonded over music. Less than two weeks later, I moved in with her. Part of my heart bound to hers in a way I had never felt before. With no parents, no siblings, not even a foster mother who’d taken a liking to me, I’d spent most of my life searching for the sense of belonging she gave me only minutes after we’d met.

I fiercely loved that crazy woman. And it amplified as the years passed when I realized the feeling was mutual.

Levee was more than my best friend. Outside of Robin, she was the only family I’d ever had.

Which really meant she was the only true family I’d ever had.

I’d heard that God wasn’t exactly stoked about homosexuality, but come on. What kind of a masochist sends a gay man his soul mate with boobs and a vagina?

Especially considering she was now married to Sam Rivers and six months pregnant with his baby girl.

I’d tried dating over the years, but the few men I’d found interesting had found me temporary. I was good for a night of fulfilling their secret fantasies. But that’s where it ended. I guess that’s what I got for having a thing for straight men. I couldn’t stop myself though. It wasn’t the sex. As a celebrity, I had plenty of men vying for my attention. Ass was easy to come by. But the high that came from being with a straight man, knowing he was going against his own genetic coding just for one night with me, made every minute of the pain worth it.

Those forbidden encounters were a drug.

And I was a junkie.

The hunt of finding that perfect blend of brute masculinity and subtle curiosity.

The chase of teasing and taunting, ramping them up until they were unable to get my clothes off fast enough.

The victory as they finally broke, giving in to the one desire they had never considered before they’d landed in my crosshairs.

That was the high.

But it was always followed by the crash.

Including the inevitable spiral down when they realized what they had done.

Some freaked, slinging insults and threats at me as if I had somehow magically cast a spell and charmed their dick into my mouth. Some wore their shame on their faces, gathering their clothes and rushing from the room without a backward glance. Some felt the high too and came back for seconds, desperate for more.

But they all left, one way or another.

Always.

Once I’d accepted that those encounters were nothing more than a fix, it’d stopped gutting me when they walked away.

While I’d had my fair share of partners, I was far from a whore. I didn’t launch my expert skills of seduction on any straight man who crossed my path. That would have been a wasted effort. I was good; don’t doubt that. But men didn’t just fall naked into my bed, begging for me to take their bodies in ways they would never forget. At least, not the men I wanted. It took patience and dedication to achieve my high.

I spent two years working my way into a certain NFL quarterback’s bedroom.

Worth every single second.

Or so I’d told myself as I’d felt another piece of my soul break away when he’d dismissed me from his life the very next day.

Maybe I was a whore after all.

But I’d tried the relationship thing and it just didn’t work.

I’d given my heart to a man once. He’d given it back a month later.

I was devastated when he left. I was ruined when, two months later, I watched him marry a woman I knew he didn’t love.

No. That’s not true. It was me he didn’t love.

That was a common theme in my life and exactly why I was so successful as a singer-songwriter. It was hard to be all “woe is me” with millions of adoring fans acting as if you were a god who’d returned to Earth.

While Levee struggled with the weight of her fame, I flourished under the spotlight. I was alive on stage. And, with no one waiting for me at home, I’d devoted years to touring. The roar of the crowd fueled my happiness to the point I feared the day when I would have to settle down.

And, right then, I was white-knuckle gripping the armrest as the jet accelerated down the runway before lifting into the sky.

“Shit. Shit. Shit,” I mumbled as my stomach dropped when the landing gear loudly locked into place.

“You’re fine,” Carter said absently.

I was absolutely not fine.

“I’m gonna puke,” I groaned.

His eyes never lifted from the pages of his magazine as he shook a vomit bag open and passed it my way.

“Thanks,” I replied, disingenuous.

“No problem. Now, take a deep breath and try to relax. We’ll be there in no time.”

As the plane leveled out, so did my stomach.

Blowing out a loud breath, I dropped my head back against the headrest. “We should’ve taken the bus.”

“There wasn’t time for the bus. Your ass is supposed to be on stage in four hours. What we shouldn’t have done is drive to San Francisco in the first place.”

“We’ve been over this. I wasn’t missing her baby shower.”

He grumbled, adjusting in his seat. “I think Levee and Sam would’ve understood.”

I narrowed my eyes and turned to glare at him. “Don’t even start with me. They would have understood perfectly. But that doesn’t change the fact that I wanted to be there.”

My tour had been scheduled over a year in advance. Tickets had sold out in less than five minutes. But none of that had mattered when I’d found out that Sam’s mom was planning a baby shower for Levee. I had very few priorities in life. However, being there for her was always one of them.

Susan approached my seat. “Can I get you another drink, Mr. Alexander?”

“Thank God. Yes!” I lifted my glass in her direction.

“No problem.” Her eyes nervously shifted to Carter. “A word?”

Carter unbuckled his seat belt and moved past me. They huddled together behind the small bar in the front, but my focus was on the mini bottle of gin she was emptying in my glass. I was well aware that I needed to slow down. Drunk on stage wasn’t exactly a novelty in my business, but slurring my words and stumbling over lyrics was a deal breaker for me.

Just as I was about to tell her to hold off on the drink, the plane suddenly jerked and my nerves skyrocketed all over again. I sucked in a sharp breath, and both sets of their concerned eyes jumped to mine.

Yep. I can sober up later.

Snapping my fingers, I ordered, “Drink.”

Susan smiled compassionately before shooting an impatient glare at Carter. I would have cared what they were whispering about if I hadn’t been about to pull an Incredible Hulk and peel out of my own skin.

“I’ll tell him,” Carter relented with a sigh, tagging the drink from her hand and then moving in my direction.

With shaking hands, I took the glass and tipped it back for a sip, relishing in the distracting burn in my chest.

“Tell me what?” I asked, settling the glass in a cup holder.

He motioned his chin at my drink. “Why don’t you finish that first?”

The clear liquid sloshed as the plane suddenly banked to the left.

“Excellent idea,” I said.

Carter’s gaze once again lifted to Susan’s in a silent conversation.

Her lips thinned.

Throwing the rest of my drink back, I bounced my attention back and forth between the two of them. Susan looked downright nervous, and Carter appeared more than a little annoyed.

“Okay, what the hell is going on with you two?” I demanded.

“The pilot is having some chest pains,” he announced.

Suddenly, there wasn’t enough gin in the world.

Fighting to make my seat belt tighter, I gasped, “Did he pass out? Are we going down?”

Carter’s expression remained impassive.

“Of course not!” Susan cut in.

Her reassurance did little to comfort me, because whatever magical mechanism kept the cabin pressurized suddenly failed. If the pain in my lungs was any indication, there was absolutely no oxygen left on that plane. We were all going to die.

Carter’s heavy paw landed on my back, pushing my torso down so my head was between my knees.

“Calm down and breathe. We aren’t going down. The copilot is taking us back to San Francisco. We’ll be on the ground in no time.”

The vise on my lungs didn’t loosen.

Still hunched over, I nodded, having heard his words but finding no relief in them.

Susan kneeled beside me. “It’s okay, Henry. Co-captain Baez is an amazing pilot. You won’t even know the difference.” She rubbed my back.

Embarrassment mingled with the worthlessness I felt in that moment. But I was helpless to reel it in. My body was out of control. I was left as nothing more than a marionette being held captive by my fear.

Reaching out, I gripped Carter’s thigh desperately searching for a way to ground myself.

The man was a beast. At six-five and well over three hundred pounds, with short, black hair and nearly black eyes, he looked every bit of the scary bodyguard I’d hired him to be. There wasn’t anything soft or gentle about him. However, he’d been with me for almost a decade. He knew how I worked, even if he didn’t like it.

He patted my hand, and then I heard the crinkle of his magazine opening.

“You’ll be fine,” he said.

I wasn’t sure he was right.

Love the music—never the man.

At twenty years-old, Sabrina Caroline was America’s sweetheart pop star, until she took a year off to treat her social phobia that her cut-throat-manager/mom paid top dollar to keep quiet. Now as part of her comeback, she’s forced into collaboration with one of the hottest rock bands topping the charts—Birds of Prey—whose lead guitarist happens to be her biggest mistake…and her biggest regret.

Hawke Owens never imagined Birds of Prey would surpass the basement of the Duncan High School for Performing Arts, let alone score them a European tour. But success has its price, and for him, it’s being forced to work with the only girl who shattered his heart—Sabrina Caroline. She’s everything that he remembers and more, every memory and fantasy come to life. At first touch, their connection is electric, but it’s also as strong as her determination to follow her number one rule—she doesn’t date rock stars…even though she’s become one.

Loving her again is as natural as holding his guitar, but she’s destroyed him once, and this time the stakes are higher, more public, and the consequences life-altering.

My hands sliding up her legs, I rose and kissed her glossed lips. “You taste like heaven.”

“You,” she whispered, her fingers playing with my buckle.

“No,” I said, grasping both her wrists in my hand. “That was for you. Thank you for trusting me.”

“But you have to go on stage, and you’re…” she gestured toward my pants as she stood, shimmying her dress back down her supple thighs.

“Hard as hell?” I forced a laugh and rearranged my dick so it wouldn’t be quite as noticeable.

She looked in the mirror. “And I look like I just…”

“Came on my mouth?” I suggested.

She arched an eyebrow, but didn’t back down. “Yes.”

I wrapped my arms around her waist and brought her against my chest, bare except for the open leather jacket. “I have no problem with the world knowing that I get on my knees for you. I’m the envy of every man on the planet.”

Excerpt

Prologue

Looking at my reflection in the mirror across from me, I cringe. My hair is a disaster, there are bags under my eyes, and the nightgown I have on isn’t even one of the cute ones I normally wear. It’s the one my sister, December, got me as a joke, but I wear it occasionally, because its comfortable, even if it was made for a woman three times my age. Resting my elbows on the desk in front of me, I run my fingers through my hair, pulling the strands back away from my face.

“I hate men,” I whisper into the empty interrogation room, where I was told to wait over an hour ago after the police kicked in my door and dragged me from my bed. Lifting my gaze, I look at myself in the mirror again and vow that whenever I get out of the mess my ex-boyfriend has gotten me into, I’m going to learn how to be a lesbian, even if I’m not sure that’s actually possible.

“June Mayson.” Turning my head, I look over my shoulder at the now open door behind me, and my eyes meet those of a man who reminds me of my dad. He looks to be in his mid-forties, and is one of those men time has been kind to. He’s built, with dark hair that’s cut short and parted on the side. His eyes are a blue that stands out against his dark lashes and tan skin. “I’m Officer Mitchell, and this is Officer Plymouth.” He nods behind him and is followed in by a man who must be playing the roll off ‘Bad Cop’, judging by the frown on his face and the look he gives me when our eyes meet. Time hasn’t been as kind to him; he looks like he has enjoyed one too many beers. His middle is soft, and his skin doesn’t look healthy.

Nodding, I cross my arms over my chest and run my hands down the bare skin of my biceps that’s chilled from the cool air coming from the vent above me.

“Would you like something to drink?” Officer Mitchell asks as he walks fully into the room.

Shaking my head, I mutter, “No, thank you.”

“Hot chocolate?” he offers, and I feel tears burn the back of my eyes. Since I was little, whenever I was having a bad day, my dad would offer me hot chocolate. His hot chocolate has magical powers that always make everything seem okay, but I doubt police station hot chocolate would have the same effect.

“No, thanks. I’d just like to know why I’m here,” I tell him as he takes a seat in the metal chair across from me and places a thick folder on the table between us.

“We may be here awhile, Miss Mayson, so I’d like you to be comfortable,” he says gently, and I look at Officer Plymouth, who is leaning against the wall, then back to him.

“I don’t mean to be rude, Mr. Mitchell, but I’d really like to get to the point. I have class in a few hours and I’d really like to make it on time.”

“I’m afraid you’re probably going to miss your class today, Miss Mayson.”

Closing my eyes, I open them slowly and ask, “Can I get a sweater?”

Surprisingly, Officer Plymouth slips off his suit jacket and walks it over to me, placing it around my shoulders.

‘Thank you,” I whisper up at him, and his eyes soften around the edges. Pulling my eyes from him, my gaze goes back toward Officer Mitchell.

“How long have you known Lane Diago?” Officer Mitchell asks, and I sit up a little taller.

“I don’t know anyone by that name,” I tell him, and he opens the file folder, fanning out a few pictures of my ex-boyfriend, Aaron, and me directly in front of me. Each of them were taken while we were a couple, showing we had been followed more than a few times. Him coming to my apartment…him kissing me outside my car…at the store, walking hand-in-hand down the aisles…at the movies…out to dinner…both of us doing normal couple things.

“You mean Aaron?”

“That what he told you his name was?” he asks, and I nod looking up at him.

“I’ve known him for about a year,” I whisper, dropping my eyes to the pictures again, realizing I actually didn’t know him, since his name isn’t even Aaron.

“How long have you two been dating?” he inquires, and my eyes drop to the pictures once more.

“We dated for about four months. I broke up with him a month ago,” I tell him truthfully as a feeling of sadness hits me unexpectedly. I wasn’t in love with Aaron—or Lane. Not even close. But I cared about him, and believed he cared about me as well. That was, until he sent me a text to meet him at his house. When I got there, one of his roommates let me in, and I found him up in his room with Susie Detrei’s mouth around his cock, proving I was wrong about him.

“You were close,” Officer Mitchell states, and I nod because we were, or I thought we were. “Can you tell me who this man is?” he asks, pulling out a picture of Aaron’s—Lane’s cousin, or at least the guy he told me was his cousin.

“Aaron…I mean Lane’s cousin Cody. He lives in Mississippi,” I tell him.

“Did you ever overhear them talking?”

“Overhear them talking?” I ask, looking at a picture of Cody and Lane sitting in what looks like a bar, Lane with his favorite beer in his hand, and Cody with a short, wide glass with dark liquid and ice on the bar top in front of him, and his hand wrapped around it while he laughs at something.

“Overhear them talking about anything out of the ordinary?”

“No.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“Maybe if you told me exactly why I’m here, I can give you the information you’re looking for.”

“Lane Diago’s uncle is one of the biggest distributors of illegal narcotics in Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina.”

“What?” I whisper as my eyes focus on one of the pictures of Lane and me standing outside my apartment. I was wearing a short colorful summer dress and gold strappy sandals, and Lane had on a pair of black cargo shorts and a plain white tee. His head was bent toward mine, my hand was resting against his chest, and his was wrapped tight around my hip. It was our third date and our first kiss. I had waited forever to even go on a date with him, because I wasn’t ready for a relationship. I finally gave in to him, because he was so persistent. He asked me out every time we saw each other, and he was always dramatic in the way he did it.

“Did you ever see—”

“I never saw anything,” I cut him off. “Lane didn’t even smoke pot, and almost everyone I know smokes pot,” I whisper, pulling my eyes from the picture to look at him.

“You two were together a lot. He would have you drop him places. My men saw you on more than one occasion.”

“To friends’ houses,” I tell him, suddenly finding it hard to breathe. “If he asked me to drop him to a friend’s or to run him somewhere when we were going out, I would do it, but I never saw him do anything illegal.”

“Do you understand you can go to prison if we find out you spent any of the money he earned from selling drugs on things for yourself.”

Laughing, I cover my face with my hands and lay my head on the table while I try to pull myself together. I probably shouldn’t be laughing right now but its either laugh or cry.

“What do you find funny about this?” Officer Plymouth asks, and I lift my head to look at him.

“I paid for us to do things more than once, and he even asked me for gas money a couple of times. I never, not once, took money from him, not even for a coffee,” I tell him, and his eyes go to Officer Mitchell, who mutters, “Fuck.”

“He cheated on me a month ago, and I haven’t talked to him since then,” I tell him, and he shakes his head.

“We have time stamps for phone calls between the two of you over the last month.”

“Did you ever look at how long those calls lasted?” I ask, knowing that if he did, he would know we didn’t actually talk. “He called. He called over and over. Finally, I had to pick up to tell him to stop calling me. I didn’t want anything to do with him a month ago, and I sure as hell don’t want anything to do with him now.”

“Another fucking road block,” Officer Plymouth grumbles, and my head swings to him.

“I’m sorry. I swear that if I knew anything, I would help you out, but I don’t. Lane never told me anything, and I sure as hell didn’t see anything. If I had, I would have talked to my uncle about it.”

“You’re sure you didn’t see anything, hear anything?”

“I’m sure,” I tell him, wishing I did know something, not because I’m a rat, but because I know what drugs can do to people. I know not everyone dies from using drugs, not everyone’s life goes to shit from using them, but my best roommate freshmen year of college overdosed and died, and that was only after she turned into a completely different person. Someone I didn’t like much. Someone I couldn’t trust. So, there’s no way I would ever protect anyone who is responsible for supplying those drugs, no matter how much I care about them.

“Would you be willing to get back in with Lane?” Officer Plymouth asks, bringing my attention to him. My heart flips in my chest at the thought, but I don’t get a chance to answer, because someone bangs hard on the glass mirror in front of me, causing my image to go funny.

My Review

****4.5 Fantastic Wilde Stars****

Wilde Magic was a book that I had been anticipating for a long time, and it is one that did not disappoint. Ever since I read the first book in Suzanne Halliday’s beautiful, romantic, and so thoughtfully crafted Wilde Women Series, I knew I wanted and needed each of these sisters stories. First I got Brynne and how Jax brought her and her love back to life. Then I got Rhiann and her intense second chance with Liam. And last, but certainly not least, I got Charlie and her story with Caleb with what happens when one fierce and vibrant woman, meets a man who could just be exactly what she needs.

To say I have loved each and every one of these books is putting it mildly. I have adored them. I have looked forward to them. I have loved every bit of their romance and build and heat, as they gave me stories of intense and all-feeling love. I have been blown away by the eloquent and mesmerizing writing of Suzanne Halliday that creates the most tangible experiences, and characters, and stories. I have loved every piece of the Wilde Women Series, and getting to know these three dynamic, headstrong, and vibrant sisters has been simply fabulous.

As sad as I am to see them all go, I must say Suzanne Halliday takes them all out on the highest of notes with a book that devivers it all. She gives you one last fulfilling bit with them all, and with that she gives you the phenomenal story of Caleb and Charlize. He’s Jax’s younger brother, and she’s Brynne’s little sister, and together they have a kind of fireworks that will enrapture and mesmerize you through every page. Those two start off hot and heavy to say the least, and they can’t stop thinking about each other, yet some not so great things threaten to tear their love story apart.

Wilde Magic follows Charlize and Caleb on their consuming journey together as they try to figure out what they want, what they so desperately need, and if their immense feelings for one another can see them through even the bumpiest of roads as they try to figure out their path together.

What I loved about Wilde Magic:

  • The many wonderful sides of Caleb. Caleb Merrill has so many sides to him, and you will fall so hard for all of them when you read this book. You’ll fall for the side of him that’s the Formula One racer, the side of him that is sweet and endearing, and the intense and alluring side of him that comes out in between. Over the course of Wilde Magic, you really get a sense of the many sides to Caleb, and how those sides came to be. Suzanne Halliday lets you dive heart first into his character to see who the real Caleb is, what the real Caleb wants, and what’s holding him back from having it all. I loved getting to understand and experience all those sides to Caleb because it really showed me what he was all about, the many intense things going on in his head, and all that he had been though. Suzanne Halliday let me understand him on the deepest of levels, and she showed me again and again what that man was all about. Even in the moments when he made his missteps and even when he faltered a bit, I got him, I loved him, and I rooted like crazy that he’d be able to find a way to figure it all out.
  • Charlize is a sparkler. Charlize Baron-Wilde is a firecracker that is dazzling, vibrant, and so easy to be mesmerized by. That girl has sprit, a ton of spirit, and that spirit reveals so much about her. It shows the tenacity she has to do what she loves and believes in, it shows how open her heart is and how much she feels, and it reveals all the wonderful things that that girls has to offer to the world. I absolutely loved Charlie’s character, and I especially loved how truly and viscerally she felt. She wasn’t shy, and she didn’t hold back. She felt. She lived. She loved. Suzanne Halliday creates her character in a way that allows you to experience that literal magic with her through every page of this book, and I for one could not get enough of what that magic brought her and me as the reader as I fully experienced this book. Charlize is spirited, vibrant, and determined to get her life where she wants it to be, even if she’s not so sure yet what that actually means, and experiencing this story with her as she tried to figure it all out was nothing short of phenomenal.
  • Feelings, and feelings, and feelings, oh my! The amount of feeling that exists between Charlize and Caleb is everything. It’s intense, it’s heated, and you will feel it in your bones while reading this book. From the moment those two meet, the sparks truly start to fly, and they soon find themselves building towards something neither of them expected. Their feelings soon become deeper and that’s when things get interesting. Some not so great things come their way, and force them apart, yet they soon find themselves closer to each other than they could ever believe. Through it all, both Charlie and Caleb feel so much for one another. Sometimes those feelings were good, and sometimes they weren’t so good, but boy did they feel. Suzanne Halliday creates and evokes those feelings with them through every page and she truly allows you to feel as if you are living this book with them. Feeling that, well that’s everything.
  • Rough roads and twists and turns. Wilde Magic and the events within it definitely put Charlize and Caleb to the test a bit. The two of them fall hard and fast for one another, but not all is as it seems, and they soon find themselves separated and reeling after some seriously shocking moments. These two definitely have a path that is bumpy and full of twists and turns, yet through it all, they’re both there, trying to make sense of it all, and trying to figure out what in the world they’re going to do with all the feeling they feel. Those twists and turns and bumps aren’t easy for Charlize and Caleb, but they reveal so much about these two. Those events push them to be honest, to realize things about what they want and need, and it forces them to take a good old look at their lives and to take stock. Though it isn’t always easy for those two, what I will say is that it is so beyond worth it, and you will love getting to be there through it all!
  • The tangible vibrancy! The title of this book has the word magic in it, and I don’t think there could have been a better title for the story you get within its wondrous pages. This book, this story, the feelings within it, and the characters that burst from it are full of vibrancy and color and life. It’s dazzling to experience, and it shows the true magic that Suzanne Halliday created with her words. She shows that that magic can change everything, and that the feelings that come with it are so deeply felt. Charlize and Caleb share that magic, and that tangible vibrancy brings it all to life in a way that will have you feeling and living it all in the most all-encompassing way.
  • A sense of family. Like any of Suzanne Halliday’s books, Wilde Magic has this true sense of family within it from the supporting characters. That’s one of the major reasons I love her books because she always creates this sense of loyalty, this sense of connection and togetherness that emanates from each page and brings all these characters together. The bond and relationships between all of the Baron-Wilde sisters is fantastic to experience, and you will love how they all bring you into the fold. The dynamic between them is fun and engaging and so authentic, and how that all weaves its way into the story will have you feeling the deeply felt connection they all share. Add to that the brotherly relationship between Jax and Caleb, two sets of parents that are meddling in the sweetest of ways, and the matriarch of the family, with the one and only Bryanna Charles Baron-Wilde, and you have yourself one dynamic and distinctive family that will have your heart beyond full.

Wilde Forever was a story that I loved. It was a story of fireworks, connection, and what can happen when you meet someone who makes you want to hope and feel it all. This is a story of life and love, and what can happen when things get a little bumpy on that path to finding what you so desperately want and need. The story in this book with Caleb and Charlize allows you to experience the literal magic of falling, and how even though giving into that fall might be scary and it might hurt a bit, it is oh so worth feeling and experiencing every ounce of.

Caleb and Charlize’s story in Wilde Magic was full of the best romance, feels, and story that a girl could ask for. Suzanne Halliday allowed me to understand these characters on the deepest of levels in the authentic world she created within this book. She gave me every single wonderful bit of them, and I simply couldn’t get enough.

As sad as I am to say goodbye to them all, I have to say that the Wilde Women have given me one helluva ride full of romance and love and life and magic, and that will stay with me forever.

This series is phenomenal, and Suzanne Halliday brought it to a fulfilling end with her unique and beautiful writing. This series doesn’t disappoint one bit, and neither does Suzanne Halliday, so I am telling you, you need to read these books. They are fantastic, and I can’t recommend them to you enough!

Synopsis2

The second novel in this darkly sexy contemporary series from bestselling author Monica Murphy wraps up an emotionally powerful two-part tale of forbidden love.

The truth hurts, they say—and my pain cuts deep. While I was falling for Ethan, he was deceiving me the entire time. He held a huge secret, protected by his lies. When I discovered what he was hiding, the truth shook my world, threatening to ruin us forever. Ruin me. But I soon realized that what we share can’t be destroyed.

The connection between us is too strong. It always has been. I can’t deny him any longer. And I can’t deny my truth: I’m in love with Ethan.

I don’t want to let him go.

While we’re trying our best to make this relationship work, other forces are fighting against us. My family, who wants to keep me safe. The media obsessed with my tragic past. The public that feeds off of it. Even Ethan’s father—the man who nearly destroyed me all those years ago. He’s doing his best to finish the job.

Despite my love for Ethan, the doubts creep in, clouding my mind. Is he worth the pain? Will our love survive, or will we have no choice but to end it—end us—once and for all?

Excerpt

“Maybe I care,” she retorts. “Think about what this will do to us.”

“What could it do? Force us to admit that yes, we’re in a relationship now? What’s wrong with that?”

“This so-called relationship only happened because you sought me out and then lied to me!” Her voice is shrill, her eyes wild, and she visibly shakes. She’s angry.

At me.

“I never meant—” I clamp my lips shut when I see her hostile expression. She looks ready to pounce. Christ, maybe she’s right. Maybe we shouldn’t have met today. Our hurt feelings are still too close to the surface, too raw and painful.

“Do you really think meeting me today was a mistake?” I need to know her answer, though I might not like it.

Katie watches me, pressing her lips together. I wait for her response, air lodged in my throat, my heart tripping over itself in my chest. I feel like it’s all come down to this. “This won’t work,” she whispers.

“What won’t?”

“Us. The two of us . . . together. We need to accept it.” Her face almost crumples but she somehow keeps it together, all while she slaughters my heart with her words. “We shouldn’t be seen together in public. If anyone recognizes us, it will become this—thing, and soon the media will be talking. About us and our sick relationship. And I don’t want that. I don’t think you do either.”

My spine stiffens involuntarily and I slowly back away from her, holding my hands up in front of me in pure defensive mode. As if my position can ward o the blow only her words can deliver.

I thought my father knew how to pack a punch, saying just the right thing to make me internally bleed. A few choice words from Katie Watts and I feel like I’m near death.

“You want me gone? I’m gone,” I tell her, but I don’t budge. I’m hoping she’ll stop me. Despite the pain she’s causing, I don’t want to walk away from her. Even though it feels like my heart is about to crack into a million tiny pieces. I swear she already broke my heart when she first found out who I really was and ran, exiting my life like she was never in it.

Now she doesn’t want to be seen with me in public. Doesn’t want Lisa to know. The rational side of my brain understands why she might feel that way. But the irrational side, the emotional side, is screaming in agony over her rejection, demanding that I hurt her back.

My vengeful side makes me think of my father.

I rub a hand across my chest to ease the radiating ache, but it doesn’t help. The way Katie watches me isn’t helping either.

“It’s for the best,” she whispers. “The minute she spots us, she’ll tell . . . everyone. And then we’re in trouble. They’ll twist our relationship into this weird, sick thing, and I can’t. I can’t bear it, Ethan. I’ve already suffered through too much and so have you. This—we’re not worth it.”

My mouth drops open. We’re not worth it? She’s the only person in my life who’s worth anything.

“I’m—I’m sorry.” The choked words leave her and I can’t say anything in return.

She turns and leaves, her steps hurried, her at black shoes slapping against the pavement as she scurries away. I watch her go, don’t stop her, don’t say her name. I don’t do a damn thing, as if I’m paralyzed, and I wonder for one crazy moment if I might be.

But I’m not. I’m just struck numb by her words, by her worry. She’s right. I know she’s right. The media will turn our relationship into a train wreck, and with good reason.

We are a train wreck. We shouldn’t have happened, but we did. No one else knows what it’s like to be me. No one under-stands what we went through together except her and me. But she has walked away from me yet again. Practically ran, and I did nothing about it.

Breathing deep, I tell myself to stay strong. Either this will work or it won’t—but I want it to. I’m desperate to keep that connection between us.

Yet I need to understand and respect her feelings. Forgive her for walking away from me so easily. It’s damn hard. That tiny, vulnerable part buried deep within me, that little boy who never felt wanted, the one who spent his entire life moving through it essentially alone . . .

He is devastated.
