Synopsis2

Sadie Jenkins’ most recent site of preservation is a sunken WWII cargo ship off the coast of the Bahamas. When a giant corporation threatens to blow it up to make way for an underwater gas pipeline, Sadie is forced to prove to the Head of Government the importance and value of her site. And when assistance comes from a bad-boy welder who works for the corporation, she ends up battling not only the people trying to demolish her site, but her heart as well—because its latched on to the one man who can save her ship or destroy it.

Connell Murphey is the best underwater welder this side of the Atlantic and thrives when the stakes are highest. When Slade Industries offers him a dangerous gig with a big pay off, he can’t wait to sign on. When a local marine preservationist gives Slade trouble—her site’s protection would cost him millions to go around it instead of through it—Slade offers Connell the deal of a lifetime: twelve million has his name on it if he gets close to Sadie and testifies to the Head of Government that her site isn’t worth saving. Should be easy money.

That is, until he meets Sadie. She’s a force to be reckoned with and the only woman who has ever been able to not only keep pace with him on a dive but completely surpass him on every level. She’s smart, sexy, and their chemistry is off the charts. The more he gets to know her, the harder he falls but he’s already in too deep with the deal he made with Slade.

When the time comes, will he be able to turn down the money and choose the girl of his dreams, or will too many lies kill his only chance at forever?

Excerpt Reveal: Down Shift by K. Bromberg

down-shift-october-4

I force myself to look away because . . . well, because he’s a stranger. In my house. Naked. And oh my God, something is wrong with me, because I’m not running and calling 911 like I should.

When his chuckle subsides, he brings his head back down, so I can see the tears in his eyes from laughter. “That thing is my cock, and since this is my bathroom and you seem to be attempting to seduce me in my house, I don’t think you have any right to tell me what to do.” And with that, he leans a hip against the counter and folds his arms across his chest, eyes locked on mine and one eyebrow lifted. Everything else is left hanging out there in the wind.

“Your house? Seduce you?” At that point I realize I’m sputtering and shaking my head. “This is my house. You’re in my house.”

Confusion drifts across his face and his jaw falls lax. “Hold up.” He lifts his hands in the hold on a minute position, drawing my eyes back to where they don’t want to be. If this whole situation weren’t so unbelievable, it would be comical, and yet as true as that is, I don’t seem to be laughing at all. “I think there seems to be some misunderstanding.”

“No shit.” Sarcasm is my fallback and it doesn’t disappoint me now. A lot of good it does me, though, as I’m still doing the naked dance while trying to react to this surreal situation.

The look of disdain he gives me at my comment earns him no points in my book. “While I’m digging the socks with your outfit,” he says with a smirk, eyes veering down and then back up to my strategically placed hands, “you should cover up.” I catch the towel he tosses me and immediately wrap it around myself. I’m certain my mismatching knee-high socks make a statement about me, but I’m beyond caring, because I’m still alone in my house with a strange man and have no answers as to how this has happened.

With one hand clutching onto the towel at my collarbone, I use the other to motion to him. “You too.”

A lightning flash of a grin glances across his lips. “Sorry, but you just took the only towel left.”

retrieval aly

I proposed on our first date.

She laughed and told me I was insane. Less than a day later, she said yes.

It was a whirlwind, but we were happy…

Until we got greedy and wanted a family.

It was a life I couldn’t give her, not for lack of trying. Fertility just wasn’t on our side. We sought out doctors and treatments. Spent money we didn’t have. Lied to our families. Smiled for our friends. Put on a brave face for a world that didn’t understand.

Finally, we were successful…

Until we were forced to bury our son.

We were left broken, battered, and destroyed.

They say love is in the details, but it was the details that ruined us.

This is the story of how I took back what had always been mine.

The retrieval of my wife and our family.

My Review

*****5 Utterly Unforgettable Stars*****

Let me start this review by saying there are many things I have come to know about myself in all my years of reading. I love me a good book, I love me a good love story even more, and I love me a good romantic suspense book something fierce. There is just something about that level of suspense and mystery being woven together so intricately with the passion and feels of a love story that I truly can’t get enough of. Romantic suspense is probably one of my top five favorite kinds of books to read.

When I found out that one of my all-time favorite authors was writing a romantic suspense duet, I shrieked. No really, I shrieked. It happened. Repeatedly. And it continued to happen through every single page of this amazing book (and Transfer too) because let me tell you something, Aly Martinez writes a damn good book. A. Damn. Good. Book. She exceptionally crafts books that are unforgettable, passionate, gripping, and deeply emotional, hit you in your heart, and steal your breath in the best kind of way books. You feel every single word of what she weaves together, and you don’t stop feeling until well after you’ve read the last word.

The way she weaves together her stories are just that impactful, that meaningful, and that visceral that you can’t stop feeling and experiencing and breathing and living them. And that is just a fraction of what makes her books so exceptional.

So when I found out that on top of everything else Aly Martinez gives me in her phenomenal books, I would be getting a story perfectly woven together with heart racing suspense, jaw dropping mystery, and such a raw intensity that shook me to my core, I shrieked.

I’m sure you understand the why behind that now.

Aly Martinez has such a way with words, with stories, and with characters that is truly in a league of its own. I can never get enough of any of her books, but that was especially true with Retrieval. This book took me. Heart, mind, and soul. It grabbed me with its power, its intensity, and everything it had. And I willingly gave myself over to it, and Roman and Elisabeth’s story from the first page. I don’t think it’s humanly possible to read their story in Retrieval and to not be taken by it.

This story is just too raw, too passionate, and too emotional to not be taken by everything within its amazing pages. I’m telling you, it’s impossible. There is no way you can experience Retrieval and everything you get with Roman and Elisabeth and not feel it, not live it, and not love every single bit of it.

Now since this book is a romantic suspense, I don’t want to reveal much of anything of the actual plot of the story because that would be oh so wrong, and it would take away from what this book, and its unputdownable story, will give you. I can’t ruin this story for you, and you honestly just need to go into it blind and give yourself over to it. Let yourself be consumed by every intense, all-feeling, and memorable moment and word of it. You won’t regret it. Not one little bit. (And in the end, you’ll be beyond thrilled that you gave yourself over to it. Trust me on that one.)

What I will tell you about Retrieval, besides the fact that this book is one of the best books I’ve ever read, is that it will pull at every single emotion you have. The prologue will make you cry. And then there will be so many other deeply emotional moments in this book that will make you cry, and feel all that emotion thick in your heart. Repeatedly. Roman and Elisabeth’s heart wrenching story will pull at every bit of your heart, will make you feel all the feels, and at times it will make you feel like you’re being torn into pieces. And then you’ll be torn again. And again. And again. You’ll feel it all with them, experience every ounce of fight and love and hate and pain and anguish those two share as they try to give it all a second chance.

You’ll feel all of that in your bones, in you’re very being really, and it will hurt, but you know what? It will hurt so damn good. It will break you, but as much as it breaks you, what Roman and Elisabeth share will try to put you back together again too. It will tear at your heart in more ways than one, but it’ll sear you to this story and the journey Roman and Elisabeth go on together even more, and soon that searing will have those torn pieces coming back together in the most mesmerizing and all-feeling of ways.

Retrieval is a story you feel every ounce of, and Aly Martinez brings those feels, the meaning behind them, and the power of it all to life in the most authentic, realistic, and encapsulating way through her perfect crafting of this story and Roman and Elisabeth’s characters.

Now let me tell you that this book isn’t just feels. I mean it’s a helluva lot of feels you’ll not soon forget, but it’s not just feels. It’s also hot. Heart meltingly, grab yourself a fan this very second, I’m as red as a tomato because I’m blushing so hard, hot. Seriously y’all, the heat, the visceral connection between Roman and Elisabeth, and everything they share, both past and present, will melt you in more ways than one. It will also shine brighter and dazzle you more than any fireworks you’ve ever experienced. There is just something about getting a second chance at it all that makes the connection between these two everything and more.

That connection will awe you, it will steal your breath at times, and it’ll have you blushing and possibly drooling throughout most of this book, and that along with the feels you get with Roman and Elisabeth on their journey back to one another, is nothing short of spectacular.

Roman and Elisabeth’s story in Retrieval is one of past regrets, second chances, and of a love so deep, so raw, and so real that it can’t be denied, no matter how hard these two might sometimes try to deny it or fight against it. It is a story of what happens when you pour every ounce of yourself over to the one person who can give you it all, if you only open yourself and your heart to them. This book is the definition of what it means to fight for the heart, the love, and the person who completes you.

Retrieval is a book filled to the brim with a passion so heated, a connection so undeniable, and a love so fierce, that nothing can stand in the way of the love and authentic investment you will feel towards Roman and Elisabeth, and their story together.

I truly think there is no way that you can read this story, and not be wholly consumed by it on every level possible. It is just that gripping, that breathtaking, and that intense that you won’t be able to stop. Every turn of that page will pull you deeper and deeper into the story itself, and what Roman and Elisabeth are sharing. As their story unfolds, and as you start to realize where this story is going, you will feel like your heart is beating out of your chest, you will be practically tearing at those pages to see what will happen next, and you will be feeling and living and breathing it all right along with Roman and Elisabeth and the other amazing characters of this story.

This is a story that will literally consume you from the first word until the very last, and when you reach that last page, you will be beyond ready for Transfer. Trust me on that one. (And just you wait for that book…because if you thought you loved Retrieval, wait until you get your greedy little hands on Transfer!)

Retrieval is everything and more wrapped up into one perfect, all-consuming, and unforgettable package.

It’s a second chance romance that will have you hoping with all of your heart that Roman and Elisabeth will find a way back to one another with their undeniable heat and soul touching love. It’s a story wrought with the best kind of intrigue and suspense and mystery that will literally have you on the edge of your seat, shrieking and gasping audibly from the surprises in store, and will have your heart on fire through every single page. It’s a story you will feel and experience every word of too, and it will have you realizing again and again how talented Aly Martinez is to have created a world, a story, and a set of characters so dynamic, so unforgettable, and so consuming as these ones.

Simply put, Retrieval is the book you need in your life this very second, and I truly can’t tell you that enough. Whether it’s Roman’s distinctive charm and determination, or Elisabeth’s easy to love fire and sass that will sear her to your heart to hers, or the perfect mixture of romance, suspense, feels, and jaw dropping moments galore, this book will give you it all. And then some. It will touch every part of your mind and your heart, and your very soul too, and in the end, you will be completely blown away with what you got within its pages.

Retrieval is the more you’ve been looking for, and it is the perfect opening to this duet. Aly Martinez knocks it out of the park in every single way with this book and her spectacular writing, and the way that this story leads into Transfer, the final book of this duet, will have you needing that book in your life something fierce. Trust me.

You will love this book. You will feel it. You will be taken with everything it gives you, right along with Roman and Elisabeth, and it will mesmerize you in more ways than one. You will be in awe of what Aly Martinez gives you within this book’s pages.

Retrieval is definitely one of the most intense, all-feeling, and captivating books I have ever read, and this book is going straight to the top of my Top Reads list for 2016. (And after you experience it for yourself, it’ll be at the top of yours too.) You need this book and this duet in your life like you need your next breath, and I am telling you, you will love it.

I dare you to not be completely blown away by every exceptional aspect of this book, and honestly at this point I just want to go back and reread it all over again, just so that I can get back within its literal amazingness. (I also really miss Roman and Elisabeth already. Like a lot.)

Retrieval is that good, that unforgettable, and that powerfully intense of a book, and you need to read it this very second.

Excerpt

“Where’d you get beer?” Elisabeth asked as she scrambled from the couch.

“Seth,” I replied, hanging my head and rubbing my eyes.

Jesus, I’d wanted to kiss her. She was being a bitch, spouting shit she didn’t mean just because she was too scared to let me in.

But, even through it, those plump lips were calling to me.

I’d never been able to resist that woman. Despite that we’d fallen apart, it hadn’t changed. The hum for her was still in my veins. It never went away, but for two years, it had been dormant. I’d packed it down so tightly that I’d hoped it had died. But, with one look, my body began thrumming like a live wire.

“Seth?” she asked as she bent over to straighten her tight, black pencil skirt.

It was a rare occasion to catch Elisabeth in something other than a perfectly pressed skirt and a pair of heels. But she’d been sleeping all day. It was wrinkled all to hell and back. The only thing her efforts succeeded in was drawing my attention down to her legs.

Legs that had spent many nights wrapped around my hips as she came while crying my name.

Shit. I should go.

But, after the way she’d latched on to me that morning, I wasn’t going anywhere.

“My assistant,” I answered. “I had him pick you up a bottle of wine, too.”

She blinked. “You have an assistant? Who delivers you beer? And your ex-wife wine?”

“No, I have an assistant who does whatever the fuck I need him to do. And, luckily for us, beer and wine happen to fall into the whatever-the-fuck-I-need-him-to-do category tonight.” She fought back a smile as I finished, “So do gyros.”

“Damn. I need to get one of those,” she mumbled to herself.

I smirked. “Cash my checks and you could afford one.”

It was a dick move, bringing up the money right then. But, despite her expert hand in decorating, that little starter house we’d bought with rose-colored glasses now needed a shit-ton of work.

Her back shot ramrod straight, fury crinkling the corners of her eyes as she snarled, “I’m not cashing your checks.”

I shrugged. “Guess you’ll have to figure out how to get your own wine and dinner after tonight.”

“I think I can manage,” she fired back.

“Suit yourself.” I pushed off the couch and meandered to the kitchen.

I went to the fridge and leaned in, searching for anything I could snack on. With the exception of at least a dozen Tupperware containers, she didn’t have much in the way of a quick bite.

Snagging a handful of grapes from the drawer, I made a mental note to send Seth to the grocery store after he’d delivered dinner.

Popping the grapes in my mouth one by one, I felt her watching me in what could only be defined as silent awe. I decided my best move would be to ignore it. “You know, I should have invented Tupperware. You alone could keep me in business,” I told her, retrieving a beer and then shutting the door.

She scoffed then muttered, “At least then I would have benefitted from you abandoning our marriage.”

Lava fresh off the volcanoes in Hell boiled in my veins.

I cocked my head to the side and questioned, “I’m sorry. Come again?”

“You should go,” she snapped.

Think a-fucking-gain.

“Nah, I’m good. Got any movies?”

I tipped the bottle to my lips, doing my best to calm the storm brewing within me, all while still fighting the desire to take her to the floor, plant myself between her legs, and remind her how that fucking attitude affected me.

Clearly, she had forgotten.

My cock had not.

“Roman, it’s been a crazy day. Please don’t do this tonight.”

“Do what?” I asked, leaning back against the huge, granite island.

She threw her hands out to the sides in frustration. “What you always do.”

“What do I always do, Lissy?”

“This!” she yelled.

I frowned and took another pull from my beer. “Haven’t been in our kitchen, drinking beer, in a long time. I hardly think it’s fair to say I always do it.”

Her eyes nearly bulged from her head. “My kitchen, Roman. This is my kitchen. Not ours. And you know good and damn well that is not what I’m talking about.”

My lips twitched as I pointed the neck of my bottle at her. “No. What I know good and damn well is that I have no idea what the fuck you are talking about. Or why you’re slinging unnecessary and, might I add, undeserved attitude at me like a short-order cook at the bitch house.”

“He did not say that to me,” she whispered to herself.

When I lifted a shoulder in a half shrug, she swung a pointed finger toward the door and yelled, “Get out!”

I grinned, crossing my legs at the ankle. “You always were cranky when you were hungry.”

And that was the exact moment her head exploded.

Read a sneak peek of BEHIND CLOSED DOORS:

“Can I ask you something?” she said, drawing my attention away from the monotony on my computer screen. I looked up to find her eyes dead set on mine. It was unnerving.

She usually tried to avoid direct eye contact with me. Maybe I intimidated her. Perhaps she found me attractive and the idea of lusting after her boss bothered her.

Believe me, it bothered me too.

In a very physical way.

“Go ahead,” I answered, unwilling to break the intimate connection she’d started.

“When you saw me… at the club that night,” she said, her eyes wavering just slightly. “What was it you saw in me? I mean, was it just the clothes?”

My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Even though I’d said we’d never speak of what happened that drunken night two weeks ago, I saw something in her eyes that needed an answer.

That needed something more.

“Why are you asking?”

“It’s nothing, sorry. I’m being stupid,” she backpedaled, as she began fiddling with the hem of her skirt.

Looking back at our few interactions, I suddenly noticed the difference in how she’d acted today. Her normal never-ending stream of word vomit was there, but behind it, there was an internal struggle going on. The hemline wasn’t the first thing she’d fidgeted with. I’d watched as she’d pulled at the collar of her shirt and then, as if she’d realized what she had done was wrong, quickly lay it flat again.

“Does this have something to do with the way you’re dressed today?”

Pink tinged her cheeks once again.

“You noticed?”

I simply nodded, not trusting myself with words in that moment.

Because I’d more than noticed. It’d been damn hard not to think about anything but.

“A gift from my boyfriend,” she replied. “He said my old clothes didn’t fit in with our new life style. It was a very generous gift,” she added, never forgetting that politeness she’d no doubt been taught since birth.

“But?” I questioned, waiting for her to continue.

“But… I don’t feel like me anymore,” she finally admitted.

“And I’m guessing the night in the club was another gift of his as well?”

It was her turn to nod.

I could see the indecision and worry gnawing at her. Someone like her, sweet, honest and good… she was meant for better things than a life with a man who didn’t appreciate her.

Leaning forward, I made sure she saw the sincerity burning in my eyes as I spoke. “That night in the club, I’ll admit, I noticed the dress first.”

She opened her lips to speak but I held up my hand to stop her, wanting to make my point.

“And today, when you walked in, I couldn’t help but give a second… or third glance at the way that new skirt hugged your ass.”

Her eyes widened at my blatant honesty.

“So yes, the clothes may grab my attention for a moment or two, but the fact that I’m still interested, two weeks later? That’s you, Cara. That’s all you.”

And just like that, I’d crossed the line.

I’d hit on an employee.

And there was no going back from that.

I’m good in a boardroom, but I’m better in the bedroom. Much better. I can charm the skirt off any woman in one encounter. I’ll even give her an orgasm before I put her in a cab. Or three. No more or she’ll start making plans for the future and I’m not into that.

Or I wasn’t until Genevive Fasbender. She’s the first woman in five years that I want to spend the whole night with. And she’s the first woman who’s told me I’m not what she wants in a lover, even after multiple O’s. She’s brash and bold and stubborn as hell, and she doesn’t believe it’s possible to satisfy her.

But I’m up for the challenge.

And after an incident in my brother’s office closet―a downright dirty incident―I think I’m just the guy to deliver.

Genevive Fasbender will never know what’s coming.

Excerpt:

Five minutes later, the valet pulls up with my car. Genevieve raises an eyebrow. “A Bugatti?”

I’m so impressed she can name the model that I practically jizz in my pants. “It’s the best.”

She shakes her head, and I swear I hear her mutter something about rich men and their toys, but I don’t respond, too occupied with inspecting my car and then passing the attendant the cash I promised him earlier for returning my vehicle in perfect condition.

I slide into the driver’s seat, and when I look over at Genevieve as she buckles her seatbelt, a wave of pure, unadulterated lust rolls through me. I’m very aware that I’ve trapped her, that she’s now defenseless to my whims. Not that I’d take advantage, but goddamn, to think that I could…

I nearly shiver at my own vile thoughts.

Glad she can’t know what I’m thinking, I flash her a smile. “So. Where am I taking you?”

“I’m staying at the Park Hyatt on 57th Street.”

“Fancy.” The Park Hyatt is one of the nicest luxury hotels in New York. That means this girl has money, which isn’t a bad thing. Just, the swell of my wallet in my back pocket is usually one of my better attributes. If wealth doesn’t attract her, I hope I’m not shit out of luck when it comes to getting an invitation up to her room.

Apparently, I’m transparent because she asks, “Not impressed?”

“Quite the opposite. I’m worried you won’t have a reason to be impressed with me.” Now I’m the one who can’t believe how honest I’m being.

“It’s a valid worry,” she says after a beat, and I can’t tell if she’s teasing or being blunt. Can’t tell if I should prepare for gut-wrenching disappointment or dive into another round of sexy banter.

I concentrate on my driving instead, speeding up before slipping expertly into a tight opening in the adjacent lane.

I’ll admit I’m showing off.

“Smashing,” she says with a tone that vibrates through my body like I’m a tuning fork.

Then, abruptly, she laughs, and I turn my head toward her, alarmed at the source of her amusement.

“I still can’t believe you drive a Bugatti in the city. I can’t decide if that makes you brilliant or as mad as a bag of ferrets.”

“Brilliant, of course.” Though, with her so close, I feel more like I’m going crazy. “What can I say? I like things that are fast.”

“Of course you do.”

“You don’t?” I raise a questioning brow. “Maybe you don’t understand how awesome fast can be.” I put my foot on the gas and race down the next block to prove my point.

The traffic light turns red as I approach the intersection, and I ease the brakes. “See? Fast is fun.”

“The problem with fast is it’s over too quickly.”

Is that innuendo? Her gaze pierces into me, and the air around us feels tight and charged, and I’m suddenly certain that I will die if I don’t get to taste her tonight.

Even if she didn’t mean anything more when she made her statement, I certainly do when I say, “Don’t worry. I know when to take my time.”

She exhales, slowly, and I swear I can feel it. As though she’s already in my arms and her breath is grazing every inch of my bare skin. No matter what happens after this, I know she at least feels this…this attraction. Or whatever it is.

Her voice is low and sultry when she replies. “You’re not talking about cars anymore. But do you really take your time? I’d guess you bolt the minute you’re finished.” She’s so blunt, so direct, and I don’t know if it’s a her thing or an English thing, but I like it.

I also like this conversation we’re having. Because we’re drawing the lines, and that means the potential for tonight is high. So I answer with a nod, making sure she understands that she’s correct in thinking I’ll bolt. Because I will.

Excerpt

Prologue

Roman

The house was dark when I quietly twisted the lock so as not to wake her. God knows she needed the sleep. I didn’t know how she still functioned when her days were filled with tears and her nights weren’t much better. It was precisely the reason I stayed gone as much as I did. Or so I’d thought as I’d thrown myself into work. Money couldn’t solve my problems, but it might have been able to solve hers.

My body ached, and my lids barely stayed open despite the pot of coffee I’d downed not even an hour earlier. It was a miracle I had been able to drive at all. I should have just crashed at the office, but after yet another failed prototype, I’d needed an escape.

Instead, I’d gone home—the very place I’d spent so many nights trying to avoid.

Only one foot was over the threshold when I suddenly froze.

“Elisabeth?” I called, flipping the overhead light on.

My shoulders fell as I found her sitting on the sofa, her long, blond hair curtaining her face and suitcases surrounding her feet.

“What’s going on?” I asked as my gut wrenched, already knowing the answer.

I had no right to be surprised. I’d all but forced her hand. If I was honest with myself, it was what I’d wanted—for her. However, none of that made the pain of reality any less agonizing.

My heart raced. “Elisabeth?” I prompted again, needing to hear her say the words almost as much as I dreaded it.

“I can’t stay here anymore,” she whispered at the floor.

Acid rose in my throat.

Out of habit, I dropped my keys into the basket she’d bought when we’d first moved in. “If you fail the key basket, the key basket will fail you,” she’d announced with an infectious smile the day we had become homeowners to the two-bedroom-two-bath starter home we could barely afford. It was just seconds before I’d swept her off her feet and made love to her on the hardwood floor of our foyer in the middle of the day.

But such was life as a newlywed.

Inside that house with her was the only place I’d ever wanted to be.

Until the fantasy of forever had worn off and the walls of real life had closed in on us. Once my refuge, our home became an inescapable prison with bars built of my failures.

I couldn’t breathe inside that house any more than I could look her in the eye.

We’d only been married for five years. But, seeing her now, I felt like it’d been a lifetime since I’d peered into her eyes, promising to love her in sickness and in health.

But it wasn’t like she was the same woman, either.

Over the last six months, she’d wasted away both physically and mentally in front of my eyes.

And I’d done absolutely nothing to help her.

But how do you throw a lifeline when you yourself don’t even have a rope to hold on to? I might have been able to keep her afloat for another day, but I’d never have been able to pull her back to me.

We merely existed on the same plane. Living under the same roof, eating meals at the same table, sleeping in the same bed. But we were far from sharing our lives together.

“Are you coming back?” I asked, not willing to accept the truth that lingered in the air around us.

Her deep-green eyes lifted to mine—the red rims and the dark circles doing nothing to hinder her beauty. Swallowing hard, she shifted her gaze to the mantel on the other side of the room. I knew what she was looking at, but I refused to follow her into the past.

That might have been our biggest problem of all.

She was still living there.

And I refused to go back.

“Elisabeth?” My voice softened, but the question remained the same. “Are you coming back?”

“No,” she replied, swiping the tears from her cheeks.

A thousand arrows fell from the sky, searing into my soul. My breath hitched, and my lungs burned. This was it—the end of my life as I knew it. But, in that moment, with her shoulders hunched forward in defeat, I realized that it was the end of hers, too.

Why did that realization hurt more than the lifetime of loneliness that was awaiting me when the sun rose?

I lifted a hand and rubbed my chest, hoping to ease the mounting pressure threatening to overtake me. “Don’t do this,” I mumbled through the pain.

I wasn’t sure who I’d meant that for though.

Was I chastising myself for having asked her to prolong the inevitable just because I wasn’t ready to lose her yet? Or was I asking her to stay in this sham of a marriage for even one day longer?

Probably both.

“You’ll be okay,” she assured me, pushing to her feet and gathering her bag, complete with our Yorkie, Loretta, tucked in her mesh dog carrier.

My pulse quickened, nature’s fight-or-flight finally kicking in. But I’d been in flight mode for entirely too long. There was no fight left.

I stepped into her path. “Elisabeth, please.” I wasn’t sure why I kept saying her name. I secretly hoped that it would snap her out of it, bringing her back to the reality of it all. But it was the reality that was killing us.

“I’ll take off work tomorrow,” I pleaded. “We can talk. Figure things out.”

It was selfish. Completely and utterly selfish. But that was nothing new for me.

Her chin quivered as a steady stream of tears fell from her eyes. “Promise me something, Roman.”

I would have promised her the entire fucking universe if it had made her stay one night longer. But who was I kidding?

We were over.

We both knew it.

“Anything,” I whispered, reaching down to take her hand, desperate for the connection I didn’t deserve.

“Remember to live.” Her voice caught, and a silent sob tore through her.

Cupping the back of her head, I pulled her into my chest.

“I can fix this,” I swore, but it was yet another lie. “We just need time.”

Her shoulders shook as she cried in my arms. “We…we promised. We told him we’d live for him.”

I closed my lids and clung to her tighter.

We were supposed to be fighting and screaming. That was what soon-to-be-divorced couples did. But that wasn’t us. We didn’t hate each other. Elisabeth was my soul mate on every level.

And she was paying the price for that.

Minutes later, the tears stopped and she backed out of my arms. I fought the urge to regain my hold, forcing her to stay. But her sad resolve as she hurried to the mantel and then to the door made it clear it’d be a wasted effort.

Never in a million years had I thought I’d be standing there, watching her walk away.

But, then again, I’d never expected her to have the urn of our only child cradled in her arm, either. A reminder of just how much I hadn’t been able to give her. How much I’d never be able to give her.

My past, present, and future were walking out of my life, and I stood immobile as every fiber in my being screamed for me to drop to my knees and beg her to stay.

To take her in my arms and tell her that we’d figure it out.

To reclaim my life once and for all.

But how would that have helped her?

Staying wouldn’t magically bring back her smile. Nor would it make her look at me with those bright-green eyes that made me feel as though I could conquer the world.

It wouldn’t give me back the crazy woman who argued with her whole heart and loved with her entire soul. No. Those days were gone.

I’d lost that woman somewhere in the bitterness between grief and blame.

We’d been happy once.

But we’d gotten greedy and tried to start a family.

That was her future. Not mine. Regardless how desperately I longed to give it to her…and then selfishly take it for myself.

Sex. That’s how babies are made. Children as young as elementary school are taught the simple biological facts of reproduction.

But what they never tell you is that, for one in six couples, having a baby goes a little differently.

For Elisabeth and me, it looked more like this:

Thirty-six months of crushing disappointment.

Three miscarriages.

Hundreds of tests our insurance company refused to cover because the inability to reproduce was not considered a health condition.

Countless tears.

Helplessness.

Failure.

Failure.

Failure.

Her broken heart.

My empty chest.

Thirty-seven thousand dollars we didn’t have.

In vitro fertilization.

A sperm donor.

A handful of hope.

A positive pregnancy test.

Five months of utter bliss.

Earth-shattering devastation.

A funeral for a child I would never get to see grow up.

A job that became my only reprieve from reality.

And now…losing the only woman I would ever love.

I’d always been amazed by how much punishment a heart could take. I was broken, battered, and destroyed. And yet, much to my dismay, as I watched the front door close behind her, my heart kept beating.

Synopsis2

Synopsis2

That moment your life changes.

That moment that changes your life.

That moment you love someone more than you love yourself.

That was the moment we gave our son up for adoption and the moment I was left bare. A wide-open space that would forever be empty.

There are moments that define you as a person, moments that prove just how strong you are, moments you push yourself to keep going forward when all you really want to do is give up. It was in one of those moments when I reached out and found him waiting for me.

When Shelby Calder left home fifteen years ago, she never planned on returning to the Alaskan town she left behind. But after the death of her grandfather and a bitter divorce, she hopes going home will be a fresh start for her and her ten-year-old son.

Zach Watters has made a lot of mistakes in his life. But when he sees Shelby Calder, looking more beautiful than ever, standing outside her childhood home, he promises himself that letting her go won’t be a mistake he ever makes again.

Some things never change and love is one of them.

“Then why did you marry her?” I ask, wondering if I’m really ready to go there with him, but it’s too late to change my mind. The question is out, and as much as I don’t want to know the answer, I need to know the answer.

“I wanted my kids to have what I didn’t. I believed that, with time, we could find a way to be happy.”

“Maybe we shouldn’t talk about this,” I say, changing my mind as nausea and jealousy turn my stomach.

“You loved your ex, baby. I know you did. I didn’t have that. I wanted it but never had it with her or anyone else since you.”

“Please stop.” Feeling tears burn the back of my eyes for him, I close them tight. Max and I were happy and in love in the beginning, and I hate knowing Zach never had that… the kids didn’t see or feel that.

“I wish my past didn’t hurt you so much. I’m sorry for hurting you the way I have. If I could take your pain away, I would.” He gathers me against him and tucks my head under his chin.

“As sad as it makes me, I wish you would have had that with her or someone else,” I say, and his arms tighten so much that my lungs compress.

“I don’t,” he growls.

“What?” I wheeze, and he loosens his grip just enough for me to take a breath.

“I don’t want to think about what would have happened if I had been with her or someone else when you came back. I don’t want to face that demon inside of me that knows what I would have done.”

“Zach—”

“I’ve been in love with you for almost eighteen years. I carried your missing pieces around inside me for that long, Shelby. I know it would have made me an asshole, but there is only one you. You’re the only place I’ve ever called home.” His voice is thick with emotion, and that wound inside of me fills up a little bit more. I hate his words, but a part of me is relieved he feels that way, that he feels so deeply for me.

“There’s been a wide open space inside me since we placed Samuel and I left you behind. But, from the moment I came back, it’s slowly been filling up.”

He goes quiet at my words. Several moments pass before he speaks again. “One day, that space will be full. I swear, with everything I have in me, I will make sure it’s overflowing and that you never feel empty again.”

My Review

**** 4.5 Emotional and All-Feeling Protector Stars!****

It is no secret that I am a lover of all things Jodi Ellen Malpas, so when I found out she was publishing a new standalone book, my grabby hands came out something fierce. To say that I have loved each and every one of this phenomenal author’s books is not doing her words the immense amount of justice they each deserve. All six of her previous books, have given me completely consuming reading experiences, wrought with thought out emotion and dynamic characters that steal my heart again and again. Her books represent some of my all-time favorites, and the characters and stories she’s given me over the years will stay with me forever in some way, shape, or form.

I went into The Protector knowing that this book would be a tad different than her others because it was a standalone rather than a series, but I knew that Jodi Ellen Malpas would weave together something I would feel every ounce of, something I would love unconditionally, and something I wouldn’t soon forget.

After reading and experiencing every word of this book, all I can say is that my predictions for this book were completely on point because what she gave me within the pages of this book is why I LOVE romances, why I LOVE her book so fiercely, and why and I can’t get enough of what she creates through her all-feeling writing. The Protector was a story that completely took ahold of me from the very first pages, and had me encapsulated in it all with Jake and Camille and their romantic, emotional, and suspenseful story.

While I went into this book not necessarily knowing what to expect, I found myself once again completely taken within a memorable story with wonderfully distinctive characters that found themselves seared to my heart in no time flat. Woven together with Jodi Ellen Malpas’s outstanding and thoughtfully crafted writing, The Protector came to be a story I lived, loved, and felt every word of. This is a story of past and pain, and more hurt than you can shake a stick at, but how when you finally see that light and hope for the first time in your life, it can bring you it all, as long as you let yourself grab onto it. From beginning to end, The Protector had me within its pages experiencing everything it had to offer, and I truly can’t say enough how much I enjoyed it.

What I loved about The Protector:

  • Jake Sharp and his overcoming of the past. Jake Sharp is a force to be reckoned with. That man is fierce, strong, and he knows what he wants and what he doesn’t need. The beginning of this story finds him doing whatever he can to halt the feelings and attractions he’s feeling towards Camille, but soon that man must face what he feels towards her, and the past that keeps him from going for it all. Jodi Ellen Malpas completely creates his backstory and pain filled past, and that will send your heart to him through every turn of the page. She puts you with him as he attempts to come to terms with what he feels, how his past still affects him, and what he needs to do if he ever hopes to find closure and move on. Every moment of this book with him made me love and feel for him more, and the strong, protective presence that emanates from him will melt you again and again. Trust me on that one.
  • Camille Logan and her fiery self. Camille Logan is no wilting flower. She also isn’t some privileged brat who expects the world to come to her. She is a fiercely independent young woman, hell bent on showing the world who she is and what she can be, and the on the thing she knows is that she doesn’t need a bodyguard looking after her. From the moment she meets Jake she pushes against him and his presence in her life, but the more time they spend together, the more she starts feeling this undeniable pull to the one man she tells herself she doesn’t want. Getting to be with Camille and experiencing her fire come out over the course of this story was nothing short of spectacular, and it revealed so much about her character. Her tenacity, her own strength that shines through every page of the story, and how that leads her to opening her determined heart towards a man who is still reeling from a painful past, had me loving every bit of her even more and realizing again and again why she is such a dynamic and wonderful character.
  • The connection that can’t be beat. Jodi Ellen Malpas sure knows how to create a connection between two characters, and how to make is so palpable that you feel it in your bones while reading. The connection between Jake and Camille gets off to an interesting start, and as much as these two feel it, they fight against it just as much too because they’re not ready to give into it. Yet through everything that comes their way in this story that connection strengthens and becomes more and more tangible. It soon consumes the two of them something fierce to the point where neither of them can deny it. What that leads them to share is full of heat, all-feeling connection, and more emotion than your heart can take. What you get with Jake and Camille as they try to figure out what they’re sharing, where it will lead them, and what it could bring them if they actually open themselves up to it is everything and more, and you will love every word of it.
  • Romantic suspense for the win! Romantic suspense stories are some of my favorites. There is just something about how a love story is combined with that mystery and suspense that really has me loving how in the story I become and what I get with the story’s characters along the way. After reading The Protector, I have to say that Jodi Ellen Malpas definitely has a knack for romantic suspense, and the way she weaves that mystery into the story makes this story all the more consuming and all the more unputdownable. She not only connects you into everything that Camille and Jake share, she puts you in it with them as they face the threats they do, and as that puts their hearts and their very lives at stake. I loved every moment of suspense and mystery I got within this story, and it added a well thought out and adrenaline pumping level to everything I was experiencing with them. It invested me even more in what I was reading and getting with Jake and Camille, and had me even more in what I was reading with them as they tried to see what they could share together.
  • Writing you feel every ounce of. Jodi Ellen Malpas never fails to craft a story with words that are powerful, meaningful, and beautifully laced with authentic and all-feeling emotion. The Protector was no different. The level of emotion, the level of romance, and the level of meaningful moments she gave me with these character knew no bounds. Her words completely captured and created everything that Camille and Jake shared. Those words took me through it all with them from start to finish, and along the way she allowed me to fall so damn hard for them and everything they shared. She made their feelings and connection beyond real, she made their characters ones that I loved with my whole heart, and through it all, she gave me them at their most honest, real, and vulnerable as they saw what they might be able to share together…and it truly doesn’t get better than that.

There really is nothing like a book by Jodi Ellen Malpas. The talent of her words truly know no bounds, and every time I read one of her books, I become completely entranced by everything she gives me with her characters. She makes every word, every emotion and feeling, and every moment of her books beyond real, beyond consuming, and beyond authentic, and that sets her books in a league of their own. She is one of my all-time favorite author’s, and reading this book reinforced that notion again and again.

The Protector was a story of romance, suspense, and heart, and what happens when two people from two very different walks of life, find themselves of the same path feeling a world of spark and connection towards each other. It follows them through every gripping and emotional up and down and twist and turn as they try to figure it all out, and as they see what the light might bring them and their hearts, if they only reach out and take it with all that they have. Their story isn’t easy and it isn’t always roses and sunshine, but through it all, what Jake and Camille share will pull at your heart and all your feelings as they try to make it all work and as they give into what they could be together.

This book was good. So damn good. It is a testament to Jodi Ellen Malpas’s talented writing and storytelling. It was a story that consumed me from beginning to end, and I really can’t say enough good things about it. What I got with Jake and Camille through their heart melting and pounding story was everything and more, and I loved every moment I got with them as they gave it all a go. You will too. Trust me on that.
