Review Post: The Final Play by Amie Knight

The Final Play isn’t always the end.
Sometimes, it’s the beginning of something far more beautiful.

The Final Play, an all-new enemies-to-lovers sports romance from Amie Knight, is available now!

As a professional linebacker, I lived and breathed football.
The only thing I loved as much as the game was my twin brother, Max, who kept me almost as busy cleaning up his messes.
The most recent of which landed him behind bars.

So, it shouldn’t have surprised me when a beautiful woman showed up on my doorstep, claiming to be pregnant with Max’s baby.

Glory was unexpected, infuriating, and flat-out crazy most of the time.
But no matter how hard I tried to deny it, that tiny spitfire slammed into my boring life with the strength of a Category 5 hurricane, blowing through my defenses until she’d carved her name in my heart—permanently.

I feared we would never work. She was a single mom, my brother’s ex, and one more chance for me to fail yet another person I loved.

But if football was my church, then Glory was my heaven.

My Review:

*****5 Absolutely Amazing Stars*****

Amie Knight continues to be one of my all-time favorite authors. When I sit down to read one of her books, I know that I will be doing that in one sitting because her books are utterly consuming. I know that she will give me an unforgettable story that is so full of heart and feels special, and I know that she will give me incredible characters that I will instantly be in love with. This book had everything I’ve come to love and expect from this author in spades, and it just had me beyond in love with everything they gave me.

The Final Play what is the perfect conclusion to a series that has owned every single part of my heart and soul.

This series has been an absolute pleasure to read. It has made me cry, it has pulled at every part of my heart, it has made me smile and laugh with the antics of these characters, it has charmed me and wowed me in every way possible, and it has just overwhelmed me in the most amazing way with what these characters have given me.

What Amie Knight has created in her Summerville Sports series is something that I will always treasure. She has found the perfect balance of romance, emotion and heart, football, fun, and feisty characters that will have you desperate for everything they’re willing to give you. I have loved getting each and everyone of these characters journeys in the series, but I won’t lie, ever since that first book, I was ready for Mason‘s story. I was ready to see his journey. I was ready to experience what he had been through because I knew it would be an emotional doozy, but I also knew that I was so ready for it.

What I got with Mason and Glory was nothing short of everything.

It was fiery as hell, forbiddingly romantic in the best way, with so much heart touching emotion that consumed every part of me as I was reading. Those two get off to a very interesting start, and it is memorable to say the least, but what ensued with them as this book continues on is a love story that well make you feel everything. It will show you the authenticity and vulnerability of them both. It will allow you to understand and feel everything with them. It will allow you to get why they make the choices they do, why they build the walls around their hearts that they do, and why the other is the one person who can knock all of those walls down. It will allow you to be at the forefront of it all as they feel and share what they do, as they put it all on the line, and as they see what could be in what seems like an impossible situation.

What Amie Knight gives you with Mason and Glory is the actual best. I’m pretty sure that my cheeks were hurting from smiling and laughing so hard at the banter between those two. When I say they are definitely enemies to lovers at the first part of this book, I mean that with the fiber of my soul, and I mean that in the best possible way. They have the best push and pull that is so intense, that is so fiery, that is so sassy and personality driven, and that will have you loving it all. They get on each other‘s nerves, they push each other‘s buttons, and they know exactly what to say to get the other simultaneously turned on and annoyed as hell. I loved being in the thick of that dynamic and I was a living for every single line out of their mouths. The way that that continues and changes and grows and develops over the course of the story with him just amplifies everything you feel for them.

Trust me when I say that.

Mason and Glory are two people who shouldn’t want to be together, yet can’t help but be drawn closer and closer to one another. He is the star football player in the NFL. Football is his livelihood, it’s in his blood, and it is who he is. After a tragedy that tore his family apart, football was a staple. And so was his brother Max. They both went through a lot of trauma, and only one of them is doing okay at the start of this book. That’s where Glory comes in. She shared a wild weekend with Max about seven months ago, and now she’s expecting a little bundle of joy that belongs to him. Bound and determined to keep the only family he really has left, Mason sets out to show Glory that he can be there to help her through this and will support her. Even if they don’t like each other and even if they get on each other‘s nerves, he wants to be there for her. But she is bound and determined to do it on her own because that is what life has shown her, and that is all she can trust.

These two definitely get off to a rocky start, but the more they get to know one another, the more that he tries to help her, and the more she tries to push him away, the more they realize that there is something about the other that they can’t deny… And that they can’t run away from. I absolutely lived for that dynamic, that vibrancy between them, and that push and pull that built in the most glorious and slow burn way throughout this book. It was absolutely everything and that combined with the forbidden nature of it all because she was having a baby with his brother and he wasn’t supposed to want her, and she wasn’t supposed to want him, and the fact that they were so seemingly opposite in so many ways, but how it also just worked, made for an absolutely incredible read.

I really cannot say that enough.

Amie Knight delivered it all in this book. She gave me a romance that was swoon worthy. She gave me a romance that was so honest and real. She gave me a romance that allowed me to peel back the layers of these characters and truly understand their hearts and their minds and what was driving them. She gave me a romance that was all consuming in every way. She gave me a romance that was beautiful and emotional and thoughtful and sweet and just genuinely enjoyable to read.

She gave me a romance that delivered everything I needed and more. And it was the actual best.

One of my favorite aspects of this book, that I felt from the very first page of that prologue, was the level of emotion and vulnerability that Amie Knight so seamlessly weaves into the story with these characters. She wholeheartedly enveloped you within that emotion from the very start. She let you understand the trauma of what both Mason and Max went through as children. She let you understand what has driven them apart as brothers. She let you understand Glory and her life and her struggle. She lets you understand what these characters have been through. She lets you understand their worries and vulnerabilities. She lets you understand what keeps them apart when all they want to do is run to one another. She lets you get and understand the why behind their fears and what holds them back. But more than that she also lets you get what eventually pushes them forward. She lets you get what gives them the faith to try. She lets you understand what makes them want to have more. She lets you be there in that tipping point when that more becomes something so very tangible for them.

She lets you be there through every facet of their journey and it is beautiful.

It is meaningful. It is heartfelt. It is genuine and real and complicated in messy and it is theirs and it is one of the best stories I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.

I loved everything that Mason and Glory shared. I loved that they had a bumpy and very memorable journey to finding their way. I loved that they so got off on the wrong foot, but definitely found their footing. I loved that they made each other realize that more was possible and that even though that more could scare you out of your ever loving mind, that more could also give you everything. I loved that they built a level of trust that allowed them to open up to one another. I loved that they really saw one another. I loved that they understood that the other had been through so much, I loved that they weren’t afraid to fight for each other when it really mattered, and I loved that they weren’t afraid to be vulnerable and real when they really needed to.

Their story definitely isn’t easy and it will break your heart a time or two, but they will show you that love can give you everything. They will show you that love can heal you. They will show you that love can give you a family. They will show you that love can give you hope. They will show you that love can bring you to places you never even thought were possible or even considered. They will show you that love can really help you find your way, even in the hardest and darkest of moments. They will show you that anything is possible if you keep your heart open to the one person who scares you out of your mind, but who also could make all the difference.

Amie Knight completely outdid herself in The Final Play.

Just when I thought I couldn’t love her books more, she went to and amplify the love I have her characters. The way that she let me feel and get every single part of this story with Mason and Glory as they took a chance on love and friendship and family was nothing short of wonderful. The way that she let me experience everything as these characters bare their souls to one another was absolutely beautiful. The way that she let me bask in the antics of their banter and their back-and-forth, while also simultaneously melting at the fiery and intense connection that was building between them was utterly incredible. The way that she just allowed me to be in this book, living these moments with these characters was absolutely fantastic.

This book was the perfect conclusion to a series that I have loved from the start. Getting to be with all of these characters as they celebrate the triumphs of football and family and friendship and love was absolutely beautiful and so meaningful. It was also all kinds of fun. Getting to be with these characters through thick and thin, through ups and downs, and through every crazy memorable moment just made this an absolutely phenomenal series to read and experience. This author perfectly balances that charm and that spice and that element of love, while also giving you so much heart and emotion.

Amie Knight brings it all together in the perfect package that will have you smiling and laughing and crying and feeling everything, and honestly that’s just scratching the surface of what makes this such an incredible book and series to experience.

I loved everything about this book and I really cannot recommend it enough. It was phenomenally written and crafted, it was so beautifully authentic and emotional, and it just blew me away with what I got with these characters. There were so many pieces and layers of them that’s so perfectly came together in this book and I just loved it. I loved what these characters made me feel. I loved what they gave me with them. I loved what they made me think and wonder and get along the way as they fought like hell for that family and that love that was so close to being in their reach. I loved getting to see them realize that love and healing and hope can be possible.

If you have loved a book by this author, then I guarantee you will love this one. If you’ve never read a book by this author, it’s a perfect place to jump in. Even though it’s the end of the line for these characters in this series, it’s also a perfect place to start the emotional love story that this author so beautifully gives you. If you love a good sports romance or a single parent romance with a for bidden twist, then run yourself to this book. And if you love a book that will make you feel at all and that will have you melting into a puddle of goo with what you get with these characters, then just do yourself a favor and read this book. As soon as humanly possible.

Amie Knight delivered it all in The Final Play, and I really could not have asked for more. What she gave me with her characters, what she allowed me to experience, what she allowed me to feel with the impact of their love was everything. It truly resonated with me in every way and I could not be more in love with Mason and Glory and what they share together. The way that these characters come together is unorthodox and a little crazy at times, but it’s them and it works and it’s fucking beautiful. And getting a love story that celebrates the possibilities of what could be, that celebrates the family you build and the family you have, and getting a story that celebrates embracing what made you you to be the person you are and the person who gets to love and be loved…well that is just magnificent.

And it makes for a hell of a love story. Trust me on that.

Excerpt

He was the best man I’d ever known and I couldn’t have him. I probably didn’t deserve him, anyway.

Tears flooded my eyes and I paid the cashier as fast as possible before practically running behind the buggy to get to my car. I loaded the groceries, tears trailing my cheeks.

I didn’t even bother to wipe them away. This whole situation was sad. It deserved my tears. Every damn one of them. Because Mason and Glory could never be.

It would be weird and wrong. What the hell would we even tell people? How would we explain? And how would Max feel? I had a feeling it wasn’t good at all.

I climbed into the front seat of my car and held on to my steering wheel for dear life. And sobbed. And then when I was done sobbing , I beat the shit out of that steering wheel and then the dashboard.

Because life wasn’t fair. It just fucking wasn’t and again and again it just kept throwing me punch after punch. How long was I supposed to still stay standing?

I felt like this might be the final punch and it was a knockout. Because I had a feeling that Mason Stark was my person. And I couldn’t even have him.

*****MY REVIEW*****

5 Utterly Incredible Stars

When I sit down to read a book by Aly Martinez, I know to buckle up for one hell of a ride. I know to expect the most glorious emotional murder, the craziest twists and turns, and a love story with equal parts fire, intensity, and so much heart and emotion. This is what I’ve come to love and expect from every book by her, and boy has she delivered on all of those things in every single way in this book. Honestly, she delivered on all of that and more in this book and I am still in shock and blown away and just truly in all of what she gave me with Remi and Bowen in this book.

The Difference Between Somebody and Someone is Aly Martinez at her best.

It’s almost as if she took everything that makes her books and her writing and her characters so unique and breathtaking and amazing and just amplified that. It’s like she lit that all on fire and exploded it all into this book and this story. I finish this book days ago and I’m still thinking about it. I’m still feeling everything with these characters. I’m still absolutely mesmerized by what I got within this book.

This book is absolutely unforgettable. I’m every way possible. This book is hands-down one of the best books I have ever read. This book is probably the most shocking and twisty turny book that I’ve EVER experienced. Just when I think this author can’t surprise me any more than she already has, she goes and does just that. Just when I think she can’t make me feel more, she goes and does just that times a million. Just when I think that there’s no way she can make me love her words and her characters more, she definitely goes and does just that in every way possible.

What Aly Martinez creates in this book is literal perfection. It is one of the most romantic, all feeling, absolutely consuming stories I’ve ever read. Throw in a plot that will bend your mind and have you guessing through every turn of that page until the very last word, along with some serious fire and intensity and connection, and you have just the surface level of amazingness that is this book.

What Aly Martinez allows you to get with Remi in Bowen is truly on a whole different playing field. This book and this trilogy is her at her absolute best. I truly cannot say that enough. Her writing is everything. The way that she allows you to feel and live and breathe and just take in every single syllable of what these characters say and feel and think is EVERYTHING. The way that it all plays out unfolding like the craziest puzzle you’ve ever put together will blow your mind to pieces. By the time you reach that last book you will feel your heart in your throat, you will simultaneously be desperate for that next book, and you will be just completely mesmerized and in awe of everything you got with these characters in this book.

It’s honestly a struggle to write this review right now because I know that my words will never come close to capturing what you get in this book. I know that my words will never be enough to tell you what this book will give you. I know that my words will never even scratch the surface of how literally amazing the story and these characters are. I know that my words will not give you that, but you know what will give you that? Reading this book as soon as humanly possible.

What I got with Remi and Bowen in this book was emotionally eviscerating in the absolute best way. Those two characters have been through so much and the way that this author allows you to understand that, to understand them, to understand their journey of grief and healing is phenomenal. That coupled with the instant and very real connection between them add a level of heat and build up to this book that is practically tangible. Throw in the fact that they’ve both survived this plane crash and the many after effects of that, and you have a book that you will never ever forget.

I’ve never read a book like this one. I’ve never experienced a story like this one. I’ve never met characters quite like these two. And that’s just a fraction of the outstanding things that this book and this story will offer you.

This story is about so many things. It is a story about healing after a very traumatic event. It is a story about putting yourself back together physically and emotionally and mentally after something that is not easy. It is about finding that one person who you shouldn’t like, and who you shouldn’t feel that pull towards, but yet you can’t help but want more of everything with them. It is a story about an actual grump falling for the best ray of sunshine in his life. It is about feeling everything. It is about giving love a chance. It is about the laughter and craziness and antics that ensue when the straight laced accountant starts to fall for the spirited real estate agent with an addiction to buying plants.

It’s about what happens when two people with a shared traumatic experience of a plane crash, realize that there are so many ways that they are being drawn together, but what draws them together the most, is there need to know and feel and experience everything with one another.

It’s about feeling everything. It’s about giving someone a chance. It’s about allowing that vulnerability to show because even when it’s scary as hell, it might give you everything you never thought you’d have again. It’s about embracing the chaos because the beauty and the honesty and the truth of that can give you at all…If you only allow yourself to feel that.

Remi and Bowen allow you to experience all of that and more in this book. This is the first book in their journey, and I will just tell you right now, just buckle up and prepare for a ride. You think you know where you’re going, but you don’t. You think you know what this story will give you, but you don’t. You think you know what you’ll get with them, but you don’t even have a fathom of an idea of how deep and real and all feeling this story will get with them. So just buckle up, grab your tissues, be prepared for one hell of a ride that will twist and turn you in the best way, make you laugh and smile with their banter and antics, have you blushing like a tomato from the literal fire building between them, and that will definitely have you guessing from beginning to end what it all means and what will happen next.

When I said that this is this author at her best, I mean that with every bone in my body. I have loved every book by this author. It is not a secret that I am a huge fan of her books. She is one of the best riders I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. The way that she lets you live and experience her stories, and feel that emotion in such a real and authentic way, is truly everything.

This book amplified all of that love I’ve ever felt for her stories and books and characters in the most magnificent way. It made me feel more.

It made me want more.

It made me question everything more. It made me experience the story more. It made me get everything more. And I think that’s just the true testament to this author and her storytelling talent that she makes you feel and want and crave and be desperate for the more that she creates on the pages of her books. And this book had that in spades. Because through every single word, I wanted and needed and had to have more because of what she was so breathtakingly giving me.

I’m truly so blown away by the story and what I got with these characters. They are flawed, they are real, they are messy and complicated in the best way, and they will burrow themselves so deep into your heart that you will need every happily ever after possible for them. Because let me tell you, if there are two people on this planet who deserve a happily ever after, it is Bowen and it is Remi. And you will absolutely treasure getting their love story in this book. This is just the first part and there’s more to come, but this author delivers everything and more for them in this first installment.

This is hands-down one of my top reads of the year and one of the best books I’ve read, and I really just can’t say enough how much you need to read this book. It was absolute perfection. From start to finish it was consuming, gripping emotionally and mentally and honestly on a soul deep level, and it gave me a story that I will never forget. Honestly I’m still thinking about it right now because that is how much I loved it, how much I loved these characters, and how much I absolutely loved everything I got with them. I cannot wait for the rest of the series to continue because when I tell you I need answers, I NEED ANSWERS.

I need ALL the answers to the 50 bazillion questions this author brought up in my mind while reading, and I cannot wait to get all of those as the series continues.

If you want a book that will shock you, that will wow you, that will consume you in every facet, and that will have you desperate for more of the love building between two characters, then run yourself to this book. Do not wait to read it, do you not miss the opportunity to feel one of the most heart wrenching and awe inspiring love stories I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. Do not wait to fall in love with Remi and Bowen. I promise you their story might make you cry and it might break your heart a million times over, but they will also fix it.

They will also show you that anything is possible with the right person, with the right amount of love, and maybe with also the right amount of craziness, safety-pins, and emotional support plants.

Read this book. Feel it. Love it. Live every breath of it. Keep your heart open to its story and characters, and be prepared for the craziest ride that you’ll never forget. And trust me when I say that this book is one you NEED in your life…right this second.

The moment you start this book, the moment you really get into the thick of it with these characters, I promise you will know that and feel that with every bit of your heart and soul. That is just one of the many things that makes this an absolutely incredible and beautiful and deeply emotional story that you will love every single second of. And getting that in a book, in a story, and with characters like these ones, is something that will make your reader heart happy. I mean it will also break your reader hard to pieces, but you’ll love it because you’ll get it and you’ll want it and you’ll be desperate for more of all of it. And the way that Aly Martinez has you going back for more even when it hurts in the best damn way, is just one of the many things that makes us an absolutely incredible read from start to finish.

Consumed by regret and razor-sharp memories, I’d resigned myself to a life of loneliness until a survivor from the same plane crash that took my fiancée stormed into my life.

Remi Grey was chaos and sunshine, fire and freedom. With her in my arms, I began to believe fate had other plans for me.

But as secrets of the past exploded around us, it seemed the only thing fated about our relationship was that I had been destined to lose her from the start.

The world owes you nothing. But for Remi, I would risk it all. No matter the cost.

It’s a Cover Reveal: The Final Play by Amie Knight

The Final Play isn’t always the end. Sometimes, it’s the beginning of something far more beautiful.

The Final Play, an all-new must-read sports romance from Amie Knight is coming February 3rd!

Blog Tour: The Complete Stars Duet by Amie Knight

The Stars Duet Boxed Set, including the complete The Stars Series including the bonus story Christmas Beneath the Stars from Amie Knight, is available now!

Beneath His Stars
I met Adam Nova under the twinkling lights of a nighttime sky.
He was hiding, but that gorgeous boy didn’t belong in the dark.
Nevertheless it was where he lived; a different world than mine.
I was Livingston Montgomery, Southern debutante.
With the world at my fingertips, I was well on my way to being another spoiled socialite.
But I didn’t want money.
I didn’t want social status.
I wanted him; tattoos, sarcastic smirk, bad boy reputation and all.
It didn’t matter that he was from the wrong side of the tracks.
It didn’t matter that my family forbade me from seeing him.
I just wanted to be Beneath His Stars.

In Her Space
I was reunited with Livingston Montgomery in the broad sunshine of a Carolina morning, right where she belonged; in the light.
It’d been too long since I’d seen her face.
She had changed, but so had I.
I was Adam Nova, reformed bad boy. Now, successful business man.
I had it all, except for the one person I’d always wanted, and now I was back to claim her.
She was living in the shadows, just a shell of the former girl I knew.
But it didn’t matter that she tried to hide from me in the dark.
I’d follow her into the deepest depths of hell.
I just wanted to be In Her Space.

Excerpt from Beneath His Stars

“Are you smoking?” Her lip curled in disgust.

            I nodded.

It was her turn to look disgusted this time. “Do you even speak?”

I nodded again and she shook her head in disbelief before reaching over the space between us and snatching the cigarette out of my mouth so fast I didn’t see it coming. I stood there dumbfounded. People didn’t snatch shit away from me. People were scared of me. Not this brave girl. I should have known.

“Smoking is disgusting.” She said it quietly like it didn’t matter, but I could tell it did to her. She bent over and put the butt out on the driveway before standing up again and shoving it in her pocket.

I smirked. “You gonna keep that?”

Her eyes ignited with anger. “No, I’m going to throw it in the trash because I’m not a litterbug.”

Shaking my head, I muttered under my breath, “Fucking litterbug.” She was being cute. The girl with the too long legs and too big mouth that I couldn’t get out of my mind was fucking cute, too. I was screwed.

I wanted to full-on smile at her cuteness, but I held my happiness close to my chest. God knew it always came with a price. And I was done paying.

“You kiss your momma with that smoke mouth?” she asked snarkily, clearly pissed off about my smirk.

I lowered my head and took a step back, running a hand through my dark hair. I wanted to tell this girl things. Things I had no business telling her, like that I didn’t kiss my momma with anything anymore. Instead, I asked the question that had been plaguing me since she’d seemed surprised it was me who had left the notes.

“Who did you think it was?”

Her face screwed up in confusion. “What?”

I stood straighter and licked my lips before answering. “Who did you think left the notes?”

I was feeling strangely vulnerable in that moment waiting for her answer and I didn’t like it one bit. Why did it matter to me who wrote her or didn’t? Or who else thought she was the most intriguing thing ever? For fuck’s sake, she was just another rich bitch from the island. Why did anything about what she was about to say matter to me at all?

She bit her lip again and I still wanted to reach over and pull it from her teeth. It was sexy that lip bite, innocent even, and for some reason that made it all the more attractive.

“I don’t know.” Her brow furrowed in thought and she looked away, almost like she didn’t want to tell me the answer to my question. But then her eyes landed on mine again. “I thought it was the other guy—”

            “Boone?” I interrupted loudly.

A disgusted look crossed her face. “God, no. Not him. The blond. The other guy.”

I let out a long breath accompanied by a sarcastic chuckle. “Grady?” That guy didn’t even graduate high school and she thought he knew anything about astronomy. I would have laughed if the whole thing hadn’t annoyed me so much.

Her eyes brightened. “Is that his name?”

I pulled out my pack of cigarettes again. “You like him or something?”

            “What? No!”

I walked out into the street and lit my smoke far away from her.

She started to follow me. “Where are you going?”

            “Home.”

“But I don’t even know your name!” she yelled and stomped a foot.

I almost smiled again.

Review Post: From the Embers by Aly Martinez

I may have carried her out of that fire, but the truth was, Bree saved me.

From The Embers, an all-new not-to-be-missed, standalone catastrophic romance from USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez is available now!

In the aftermath of tragedy, it’s strange the things you remember.
The deafening boom as the house exploded.
The paralyzing fear as I searched for my wife.
The blinding smoke burning my eyes as I carried her out.

But carved into my soul for the rest of my days would be the earth-shattering realization that the woman in my arms wasn’t my wife.

Bree and I were the only survivors—not that either of us were truly living after that night. As a single dad with nowhere else to go, I moved into her guest house. And somehow, through the guilt and grief, we forged an unlikely team.

It took years, but I watched the gradual return of her smile—slow and life-altering.
The two of us could sit outside for hours, talking about nothing, and it filled the massive hole in my chest with new life.

I may have carried her out of that fire, but the truth was, Bree saved me.

As we healed, the secrets and lies of the past smoldered in the ashes, threatening to ignite again.

Our love was born from the embers, and together we would go up in flames.

Be consumed by the fire, today!
Exclusively on Kindle Unlimited.

Excerpt

Using my arm to block my face, I carried her lifeless body to the door. The knob seared my palm as I yanked it open, but the pain didn’t even register through the adrenaline. The sound of my feet pounding down the driveway echoed in my ears as the fire crackled behind me. Our closest neighbor was over half a mile away, but there was no way they hadn’t heard the explosion. The fire department would be there soon.
Once I got Jessica safe, I’d go back for Bree. They’d find Rob. Everyone would be okay.
“Eason,” she croaked in my arms.
My feet were still moving as I sprinted away, but time stopped as her voice permeated my senses.
It wasn’t possible.
She was covered in soot, and my eyes were caked with ash and what I would later learn to be blood, but I could still make out the large flowers on her yellow—
“Uh, no. It’s my dress that your wife borrowed and I had to do an entire Tom Cruise Mission Impossible thing to get it back last week.”
Oh, God.
I kept running until the wind changed direction, clearing the smoke. With my heart in my throat, I prayed that my still ringing ears had deceived me. I set her down and used the inside of my shirt to clear my face.
“Eason,” she croaked.
But once again, she wasn’t my wife.
“Oh, God,” I breathed, watching as she rose on unsteady legs. Tears carved twin riverbeds through the ash on her cheeks.
“What happened?” Bree asked, her green eyes focused on the blazing inferno behind me.
Acrid guilt devoured me. “I…”
I saved the wrong woman.
I left the mother of my child in a burning building.
My final broken promise to the woman I’d vowed forever to was, “I’ll be right back.”
Bile crawled up my throat. “I don’t know.”
I glanced back at the house, the heat of the roaring fire scorching me even from yards away. Overwhelming grief hit me as I realized there was no way I could get back through those flames.
Oh, God. Jessica.
In the middle of tragedy, it’s strange the things that become engrained into your memories. Years later, I wouldn’t be able to tell you how long it took the firetrucks to get there. I couldn’t tell you what time it was or what I had been wearing. But I would never be able to forget the absolute devastation on Bree’s face when she realized we were the only two standing outside the burning house.
“Where’s Rob?” she rasped, her voice sounding like it had traveled over a mile of gravel before exiting her throat. “And Jessica. Where are they?” She took an urgent stride toward me.
“I tried…” I doubled over into a fit of coughing. It was probably for the best. There was no way I could have finished that thought.

*****5 UNFORGETTABLE STARS*****

From the Embers is Aly Martinez at her best.

Exceptional, out of this world writing. All-consuming and deeply emotional storytelling. Dynamic and beautifully complicated characters that will own you and your heart fiercely. All of the glorious emotional murder with simultaneous twists and turns that define an Aly Martinez book.

This book is EVERYTHING. It is everything and then some.

If I could scream that at you right now, I would. But I will not do that. Too much.

This book is hands down one of my favorites by this author and one of my top reads of the year.

It is also one of the most emotionally gripping books I have read in quite some time.

This book broke me. It killed me and all of my feels and emotions at times. It murdered and tore at my heart. It physically and emotionally hurt me more times than you can shake a stick at. There were moments within this book that simultaneously shattered me, took my breath away, and had my eyes tearing up again and again. At one point when reading From the Embers, I stopped reading, took a breath, and made myself an alcoholic drink because I was so consumed in the feels with Eason and Bree.

That is how much I felt every morsel of this book. That is how much I lived the events and unforgettable moments of this book. That is how much I breathed every second of this story.

And you know what?! I effing loved every second of it.

You see I am an emotional masochist. I love it when a book makes me feel everything. I love it when characters allow me to peel back their layers, look at their flaws, understand their personalities and dynamics and complications, all while letting me feel everything with them along the way. I love it when a book hurts my heart. I love it when characters make me cry. I love it when the events of a story hurt my heart and envelope me within their feels in the deepest and realest of ways.

It is what I live for as a reader. It is what I LOVE. It is what I honestly treasure.

Aly Martinez is my dealer of choice when it comes to romance novels that make you feel everything, and From the Embers was no different. In fact, it was more. So much glorious more.

This book explores what happens when the unimaginable occurs. It follows the all-consuming and deeply emotional love story of Bree and Eason. These are two people who are friends, but not really friends. They’re kind of at odds with one another, but a life-changing and eviscerating event changes everything for them. A house fire kills their spouses, and in the moment when Eason thought he was saving his own wife, he realized he was saving Bree. Now the two of them have to pick up the pieces. They have to put themselves back together again after heartbreak, after devastation, after the death of their people.

From the Embers Is their story of how they go from being at odds, to being some version of friends with one another, to being so much more. Along the way is a deeply gripping and emotionally breathtaking story that will own you from start to finish. And just like any Aly Martinez novel, there are plenty of twists and turns through every page that will have you wondering what the hell that next moment will bring them.

I loved Bree and Eason. So damn much.

Even when those two broke my heart. Even when their struggles threatened to consume me right along with them. Even when I didn’t know which way was up or through with them, I loved them.

I loved their tenacity. I loved that this book was not only about them sharing and building what they were, but it was also about them discovering who they were. This book allowed them both to peel back the layers and the fronts and the sheilds, and to just become who they really were. It allowed them to embrace themselves, own themselves, fight for themselves. And along the way it also allowed them to realize that the one person who they never thought would mean anything, just might mean everything.

This book allows you to journey with them after the devastation of losing their spouses, as they try to heal, but as they soon realize that they are feeling a hell of a lot more for one another and they ever thought they could. Both newly single parents, they are just trying to pick up the pieces. They are struggling to wade through that ocean of grief that is starting to consume them. They are honestly just struggling to put one foot in front of the other, but they soon find that the one person who gets it is the other. That strength and that bond and that friendship that grows soon sparks a flame that cannot be doused. What ensues in this book between them is something very real, very deep, and fiercely emotional.

Bree and Eason thought the hardest part of it all would be picking themselves up after losing everything. But what they soon learn is that their new path is riddled with truths, and secrets, and lies….and that path ain’t easy. But what they also know and learn is that that path, while not easy in the slightest, might just be the path they were always meant to be on…together.

What I loved about this book, and what I’ve loved about every book by Aly Martinez, is that she always perfectly balances that emotion, that banter, that spark and connection and romance, with a story that just can’t be beat. She literally has everything in her books. She has characters with so much personality. She has moments that will make you laugh your ass off. She has other moments that will make you feel like you are dying and might actually drown in your tears. She has moments of pure swoon and heart.

She has everything within her books, and the way that she so fantastically crafts and creates that through her words truly sets her books apart. The moment you read one of her books, you know that and feel that with everything within you. I know I have. A million times over, and it is the actual best.

From the Embers Is truly one of the best books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It had everything. It had this enemies to friends to lovers feel to it. It had a single parent romance going on, while it also had so much more. It had twists and turns and secrets and lies and truth to be revealed. It kept me on my toes. It broke my heart to smithereens, but it also put it back together again in the most beautiful breathtaking way. It had amazing complicated and dynamic characters that I loved with everything that I had. It had that buildup of intensity and that glorious level of angst to that topping point that I lived for.

It just had a feel to it that I will never forget, a story that is still with me, and characters that I will love for the rest of time.

Bree and Eason are truly some of the best characters that I have ever read. I loved their banter and dynamic. I loved that this book and its events forced them to not only look at their own lives, but to look at what they were sharing together. I loved that this story and its event made them re-evaluate everything they thought was important and who they were and who they wanted to be. I loved that they made each other want more. I loved that even though they had a very uneasy start, that this book allows them to see that there is so much more to the both of them.

I loved that they also completely got each other. I loved that they weren’t afraid to push for more when it really mattered. I loved that they had this he’s and this rightness that shined on every page of this book. I loved that that spark and connection between them grew and intensified through every moment of this book in a way that felt beyond right and meant to be. I loved that with each other they could just be themselves. I loved that they could create a friendship and a family that was built out of the deepest love. I loved that they got to feel it all with each other, and more than that they truly understood it and embraced it.

I am telling you now, there is no resisting the two of them. And more than that, you will not want to resist them. You will love them, you will root for them, you will feel every lick of it with them, and it will give you everything.

Simply put, this book had it all.

Aly Martinez once again delivers an absolutely phenomenal book from start to finish. Like I said at the start of this review, this book is her at her best. The storytelling and writing ability that she has is truly exceptional, and it shines on every page of this book.

This book will own you. It will consume you. It will take over every single part of your heart and mind and soul and feelings and just everything in between. And you will effing love it. You will love what these characters give you. You will love how it keeps you and your heart and all of your feelings on their toes. You will love that you don’t know what that next page will bring you. You will love everything between Bree and Eason.

You will just love everything this book delivers to you.

From the Embers Is one of the best books I’ve ever read. It is definitely a favorite of mine by this author, and it is a book that you need in your life this very second. Do not wait to embrace and live and feel this story. Do not wait on Bree and Eason and what they give you. Do not wait one more second to experience this unforgettable and all-consuming book.

It will break your heart, it will make you work for it, it will steal your breath at times, but you will love it. You will love what it so authentically and deeply gives you. You will love the spark of it all. You will love how it turns your world and your heart upside down right along with these characters. You will love that it isn’t easy, but through every word of it you know that it’s worth it.

You will love it all, and in the end, I promise that you’ll be damn glad you read this book.

So buckle up, grab some tissues and a drink, and get ready for one hell of a story that you will never forget. By the end of chapter 1 you’ll be simultaneously hooked, mentally cursing at Aly Martinez for what she’s already doing to your feels and emotions, and loving every second of what you’re getting with these characters. And really, it doesn’t get better than that.

Trust me.
